Campbell C. Dotson was born December 22, 1843 in Calhoun, TN. He was the son of James Dotson and Mary Longley. In 1847, the family moved to Texas. The 1850 Austin County census records show that Campbell had four sisters at that time - Priscilla, Nancy, Mary, and Rebecca.
On January 23, 1863, Campbell enlisted as a volunteer in the Confederate Army, and served in Company B., in Flournoy's regiment under Captain Gerald in the 16th Texas Infantry for 3 ½ years until the war ended. He was recorded as present in the last company roll call taken on February 29, 1864. The Adjutant General's records at the War Department erroneously listed him as "Campbell Dodson", and noted that he was a "private and musician".
On July 01, 1871, Campbell married Virginia Wright in Burleson, TX. They moved to Tuscola and resided there for 31 years. Their address was on Route Number 1, Tuscola, Texas. They had nine children - Dolph, Eula, Mary, Ada, Henry, Persila, Zilpha, Martha, and Walter.
On May 31, 1911 at the age of 68, Campbell applied for a Confederate Pension. Because of the misspelling of his last name in the official records, he had to have two friends who had known him during the war sign a sworn affidavit under oath that Campbell had indeed served with them until the war ended.
According to the State and County Assessor, as of Oct 30, 1913, Campbell Dotson had a homestead in Taylor County worth $430 (four hundred thirty dollars) and $70 in other assets.
Campbell passed away on January 04, 1925, and was buried the following day in the Cedar Gap Cemetery in Taylor County, Texas.
