Charles Pickney was born on Friday, 4 June 1897, probably in Wise County, Virginia. He died of a heart attack on Sunday, August 8th, 1954 at the age of 57 during a church picnic at the Church of God, located on Kentucky Avenue in the Ramsey section of Norton. Charlie and Carrie Dora Denham, who was born in Kyles Ford, Tennessee on Sunday, April 28th, 1901, eloped to get married in Cumberland Gap, Tennessee on Sunday, October 14th, 1917, a year before the end of WWI. One of their daughters remarked that a Nannie McClellan went with them to chaperone.
Charlie was the seventh child of William Floyd Stewart and Mary Jane Meade. Charlie worked as an electrician for the Blackwood Fuel Company in Pardee, VA. After renting houses in Glamorgan, Pennington Gap, and from the Norton Coal Company, Charlie and Carrie bought a house on the southside of Norton at 615 Roberts Avenue on the 23rd of October, 1929 for $600.00. Here, in addition to William Edward, Lottie, and Eugene Donald, they raised Sarah Ruth, James Elmo, Doris Ann, Charlotte Faye, and Geneva Irene.
