Fort Pearce was built by the Mormon Colonists of Utah's "Dixie" during the Black Hawk War, 1865-69, a period of conflict between the Ute and Navajo Indians and the settlers. This location was selected to maintain control of the springs below which is a [water?] source for livestock, and to block the use of this [strategic] spot by the Indians.Originally, the walls of the fort were about eight feet high. The structure was never roofed. The small rooms at opposite corners were designed so that the defenders could shoot from gun ports and cover the fort from all directions.
PLEASE LEAVE FORT PEARCE AS YOU FOUND IT!
