ORA NEWMAN

ORA NEWMAN, eighth child of John and Emma Newman, was born February 20, 1900. His birthplace was some eight miles west of Garrison, Texas in Nacogdoches County, Texas. Ora's childhood was spent in the Walnut Grove Community countryside. His school days were few and short but his wisdom surpassed any book learning. Throughout his life he lived within walking distance of the Newman Homestead. His optimistic attitude was transmitted to all whom he contacted. Ora married, age 19, PEARL PARROTT, age 16, on December 20, 1919. Pearl was born January 20, 1903. Pearl is the daughter of MATT and MAY PRINCE PARROTT. Pearl was orphaned at an early age and grew up with relatives. She was taught lessons in homemaking by a patient mother-in-law. Lessons learned from Emma Newman continued to stir fond memories. Ora was a farmer for many years and the year 1925 ended these sharecroppers years. At this time the 120 acre farm was bought. Ora and Pearl worked many years side by side until the note on the farm was paid in full. Because of their tireless efforts and sacrifices, the land deed still bears the Newman name. In the 1930's the farm work was exchanged for employment with the Acme Brick Company, Garrison, Texas. This work continued until his retirement in 1965. He was a member of Masonic Lodge $670, Garrison, Texas. Death came by cancer at the age of 72, on May 4, 1972. Pearl died on November 6, 1989 due to results of a stroke. Both are buried at Walnut Grove Cemetery, Garrison, Texas.

1. GLADYS NEWMAN, first child of Ora and Pearl Newman, was born October 17, 1920. She married OSCAR B. HARTT on April 19, 1941. Gladys is a 1938 graduate of Garrison High School. She attended Stephen F. Austin State Teachers College, Nacogdoches, Texas in 1940 and 1941. Oscar was born January 4, 1920. They are both retired (1997) and reside in Carthage, Texas.

a. RALPH CHESTER HARTT, first child of Oscar and Gladys Hartt, was born September 13, 1942. Chester, a math major graduate from Louisiana Tech, Ruston, Louisiana, in 1969. He has done graduate work at the University of Houston, Houston, Texas and had earned a teachers certificate. Chester married LANETTE JACKSON on September 22, 1995.  She was born December 19, 1944.  Lanette is church administrator at Lord of Life Lutheran Church in The Woodlands, Texas.  Chester is a teacher of high school math in Cleveland Independent School District, Cleveland, Texas.

b. MICHAEL RAY HARTT, second child of Oscar and Gladys Hartt, was born August 3, 1947. He is a 1970 graduate of Northwestern School of Business Administration, Natchitoches, Louisiana. He married JUDY JOHNSON who was born October 4, 1949. Michael is in the Insurance business and resides in Monroe, Louisiana. 

1A  DAVID HARTT, first child of Michel and Judy Johnson, was born August 1, 1968.  He married KIM (?).  To this union LAUREN HARTT was born December 15, 1999.

2. MARION NEWMAN, second child of Ora and Pearl Newman, was born June 18, 1927 in Garrison, Texas. She married EDWARD DEASON MOORE on March 7, 1947. Edward was born December 3, 1922. He obtained a Bachelor of Science Degree from Sam Houston State Teachers College, Huntsville, Texas and a Master of Education from Stephen F. Austin State Teachers College, Nacogdoches, Texas. He has taught for 22 years and was an Elementary Principal for 16 years at Buna High School. Marion was a Special Education Aide for eight years and a substitute Teacher for seven years. Both are retired.

a. LINDA DIANNE MOORE, first child of Edward and Marion Moore, was born April 4, 1950 in Nacogdoches, Texas. She married JAMES DOUGLAS CROOM on December 16, 1972 in the First Baptist Church in Buna, Texas. James was born November 30, 1947 in Washington, D. C. Linda was Salutatorian of 1968 graduating class. She received her Bachelor of Arts Degree from Lamar University, Beaumont, Texas. She is an Elementary School teacher in Lufkin, Texas. James has a Bachelor of Science Degree in Mechanical Engineering from Lamar University, Beaumont, Texas. To this union MICHAEL DOUGLAS CROOM, born June 23, 1976 and MARSHA DIANNE CROOM, born July 12, 1978.

b. EDWARD DEAS MOORE, second child of Edward and Marion Moore, was born July 3, 1953 in Nacogdoches, Texas. He married VIRGINIA SUE MCKAY on August 23, 1975 at Mcdonald Memorial Baptist Church, Orange, Texas. Virginia was born in Port Arthur, Texas. She has a Bachelor of Science Degree in Elementary Education from Lamar University, Beaumont, Texas. Edward was Valedictorian of his 1971 graduating class. He has earned a Bachelor of Science Degree in Civil Engineering from Lamar University, Beaumont, Texas. He obtained a Master of Civil Engineering from Rice University, Houston, Texas. To this union LAURA MOORE, born June 20, 1982 and MARY MOORE, born February 28, 1984.

3. JAMES FRANCIS NEWMAN, third child of Ora and Pearl Newman, was born December 5, 1932 in the Walnut Grove Community. He is a graduate from Stephen F. Austin State University, Nacogdoches, Texas. He married MARTHA NELL KELLING, age 20, on July 29, 1955. Martha was born July 24, 1935. She earned a BS and Masters Degree in Education from Stephen F. Austin University, Nacogdoches, Texas. She teaches kindergarten at University Elementary School in Shreveport, Texas (1997).

a. JAMES KEITH NEWMAN, first child of James and Martha Newman, was born March 3, 1957. He received a Bachelor of Science in Business from Baylor University, Waco, Texas and a Masters in Theology and Counseling from Southwestern Baptist University. He married TRACY HICKS on August 16, 1986. She was born April 24, 1962 in Drain, Oregon. She received her college education from the University of Oregon. Keith is employed as a Counselor-Case Worker with Children Services of Oregon. To this union KEELY NEWMAN, born July 16, 1988, TYLER NEWMAN, born October 18, 1990 and HANNAH NEWMAN, born August 6, 1994.

b. KERRY MITCHELL NEWMAN, second child of James and Martha Newman, was born December 19, 1961 in Houston, Texas. He received an a Bachelor of Science in Business in December, 1987 from Louisiana Tech.

c. LEIGH ANN NEWMAN, third child of James and Martha Newman, was born May 22, 1963 in Houston, Texas. Leigh Ann married JOHN WEAVER on March 21, 1992 in Shreveport, Louisiana.

d. AMY MICHELL NEWMAN, fourth child of James and Martha Newman, was born January 21, 1965 in Shreveport, Louisiana. She married MICHAEL W. YATES on March 11, 1989. Amy is a Clinical Dietitian and Exercise Therapist at Schumpert Hospital's Cardiology Rehab Unit. Mike is the Director of Echo Cardiograms at LSU Medical Center. To this union CLAYTON MICHAEL YATES, born November 13, 1991 and ANNA CATHERINE YATES, born April 18, 1994.

4. MILDRED NEWMAN, fourth child of Ora and Pearl Newman, was born January 13, 1935 in Garrison, Texas. She is a 1953 graduate of Garrison High School. Mildred completed an Executive Secretarial course at Nacogdoches Business College, Nacogdoches, Texas. She began employment with Lufkin I.S.D. in 1972. Mildred has worked as School Secretary at Hackney Primary in Lufkin, Texas. She married WILLIAM ALFRED STODDARD, age 32, on August 13, 1955. Al was born September 13, 1934. He received a B.S. Degree from Stephen F. Austin State Teachers College in Nacogdoches, Texas. He holds a Masters Degree in School Administration, A Superintendent's Certificate and A Special Education Certificate. He and Mildred are very active in the Baptist Church of Lufkin, Texas.

a. ALFRED GREGORY STODDARD, first child of Al and Mildred Stoddard, was born June 15, 1956. He is a 1974 graduate of Lufkin High School, Lufkin, Texas. He married SHELA CHILDRESS on January 20, 1978. He is employed with Champion International Paper Company and is Deacon at Calvary Baptist Church. To this union GREGORY DUSTIN STODDARD, born October 12, 1979, BRENNA PAIGE STODDARD, born June 12, 1981 and BREANNA CRYSTAL STODDARD, born January 2, 1984.

b. WILLIAM JEFFREY STODDARD, second child of Al and Mildred Stoddard, was born December 14,1958. He obtained an Associate Degree in Applied Science in Drafting and Design Technology from Angelina Jr. College, Lufkin, Texas. He married, age 22, LESA GAIL NASH on September 1, 1979. To this union WENDY ALLISON STODDARD, born May 8, 1981 and APRIL RENEE' STODDARD, born April 15, 1983. They were divorced and he later married STACI CRAIG FENLEY who brought to this marriage AMANDA FENLEY, born May 1, 1984. To the union of William and Staci was born TANNER NEWMAN STODDARD on May 19. 1990.

c. LORI ALLISON STODDARD, third child of Al and Mildred Stoddard, was born April 8, 1963. She married EDWARD SHANE BROWN on August 4, 1984. In 1987 he received a B.F.A. in Musical Education with a Minor in Computer Science from Stephen F. Austin State University, Nacogdoches, Texas. Lori is a Fine Arts Teacher at Shepherd Jr. High School, Shepherd, Texas. Eddie is the Music and Youth Minister at their church. To this union ALLISON LEIGHT BROWN, born May 20, 1989 and BLAKNEY DURAN BROWN, born February 22, 1991.

1. CROSBY NEWMAN, fifth child of Ora and Pearl Newman, was born November 12, 1936 in Garrison, Texas. He married SALLY CLARA HOLLAND on January 26, 1962. To this union three children were born. Sally was born January 26, 1942 and died, age 34, on November 7, 1976. She is buried in Deadwood, Texas (near Carthage, Texas). Crosby later married PATRICIA SUSANNA KENNEDY on November 2, 1979 and was later divorced.

a. JONATHAN DAVID NEWMAN, first child of Crosby and Sally Newman, was born July 29, 1962. He married CHARLENE WILLIAMS, who was born October 3, 1956. To this union JONATHAN DAVID NEWMAN, II, born April 12, 1981 and WILLIAM CHARLES NEWMAN, born January 6, 1984.

b. RICHARD NEWMAN, second child of Crosby and Sally Newman, was born July 2, 1965. Richard died on June 27, 1987, age 21, from complications of Pneumonia and was cremated. His ashes are buried in Deadwood Cemetery, Carthage, Texas.

c. LUCINDA DIANNE NEWMAN, third child of Crosby and Sally Newman, was born May 24, 1967, She married STEVE HENNENT who was born June 6, 1967. To this union NATHAN RYAN HENNENT was born September 1, 1985.
