IRENE "JACK" NEWMAN, tenth child of John and Nancy Newman, was born February 1, 1905. He was given the name LEE IRENE NEWMAN by his sister LaFlatie. His mother called him "Jack" because she didn't like the name Irene. In the late 20's, Jack moved to Oklahoma where he earned his living picking cotton. He later returned to the family and at the age of 25 he married FANNIE BELL HANEY, age 20, on November 19.1931. Fannie Bell was born October 8, 1911. They farmed for 12 years on the Golden Drein Creek. During these depression years, he also worked for the WPA on road construction for a dollar a day. Because of the flooding and hard times they were forced to move away to Holly Springs Community. During World War II, he moved to Houston, Texas where he became a ship painter in the shipyards. There he was exposed to asbestos, resulting in the contraction of Emphysema in the later years of his life. In Houston he also held another job at the Dixon Gun Plant as a guard. Fannie Bell stayed on the farm and took care of the animals and children. In the defense plants, pay day occurred once a month. Monthly, Fannie Bell and one of the children would catch a bus to Houston to puck up the money from the pay check. After the war ended, he returned to Garrison and bought 66 acres at Holly Springs. He worked the farm and painted until his semi-retirement. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge #670, Garrison, Texas. Fannie Bell Haney Newman died on May 24, 2000 and Jack Newman died on February 14, 1984, age 79, both are buried at Walnut Grove Cemetery, Garrison, Texas.
