TEXAS - THE FIRST SETTLEMENT

After crossing the Texas border, the Family made camp in an area called Neutral Ground. this was located on the Texas side of the Sabine River between Logansport, Louisiana and Joaquin, Texas. This area was the site of the most serious feud that President Houston had to deal with. A terrible war broke out between newcomers and early squatters and there were may shootings and murders between the "Regulators" and the "Moderators". Houston had to call in the army to put the area back in order. It is no wonder that the family found trouble here. The camp ground was own by "undesirables". These people preyed upon migrants entering into the Texas State. The camp had bathing facilities, a general store and sleeping arrangements. The story is past down that the family arrived late at night. They were very tired after many long days of traveling and took advantage of the sleeping facilities. They hid one thousand gold pieces in the bottom of a trunk with their clothing and other household items. It was kept in the wagons while they slept. In the night, robbers slipped into the camp and stole the trunk with all the clothes and the one thousand gold pieces. The next day they found the trunk and clothes in the Sabine River, but, of course, the money was never recovered. The family was left penniless.

It is not quite clear what they lived on or how they survived this ordeal. Some believe they sold some of the horses, maybe a wagon or a cow and proceeded on their journey. It seemed that no obstacle would stop them from their passage.

Soon the family had come almost to the end of their westward travels. Martin, with his wife Flora Ann and the remaining settlers stopped in Shelby County at the settlement called "BUENA VISTA". Buena Vista is a small community located between Center, Texas and Timpson, Texas just southeast of Timpson on the Folsum Chapel Road. Buena Vista was originally called 'BUCK SNORT". The family continued to live in the covered wagons until a log cabin was built to house them all. The men and the women began to plant the spring crops. The children who were to young and those not able to work in the fields had plenty of chores around the settlement.

The crops were bountiful for the year 1858 and the cotton crop was picked and taken to the gin for baling. The other field and garden crops, which were not needed for the family, were also carried to market and sold. Their luck seemed to be changing for the better.

The 1860 census of Shelby County, Texas in the Community of Buena Vista, Martin Newman's name was recorded as JOHN NEWMAN. There seems to be quite a few errors in the names and spelling plus the information is sloppy. The person furnishing the data could have been very young or the census taker was poor. The above census was taken on July 28, 1860. The following census in the same area, Buena Vista, was taken on July 26, 1860 and recorded this information:

It is not known why A. J. or D. C. Brandon used two different names, but in the Martin Newman Bible is recorded "D. C. BRANDON DIED DECEMBER 7, 1862".

After the family was settled down in the Buena Vista region, DANIEL HENRY NEWMAN,   his wife and children, decided to move on to the settlement at Appleby, Nacogdoches County, Texas.

When the Civil War began, some family members enlisted in the Texas Confederate Army. They were GEORGE WASHINGTON NEWMAN, age 18; BENJAMIN FRANKLIN NEWMAN, age 16 (he is listed on the Confederate Records at age 18); and A. J. BRANDON, age 22, husband of Flora Ann.

The family was starting to split up. All throughout the 1860's Martin Newman's sons and daughters left home. In 1870 Martin Newman received an Excess Land Grant from the State of Texas. This 160 acres were located in Angelina County, Texas. The property is located on what is now Highway 103 West about seven miles from Lufkin, Texas. The Newman Cemetery is located on part of this property. It is the burial place of MARTIN NEWMAN, FLORA ANN WILLIS NEWMAN, their daughters, SARAH ANN ELIZABETH NEWMAN COOK, LOUISA ANN NEWMAN BENNETT, FLORA ANN NEWMAN BRANDON YARBROUGH and ADLINE VIRGINIA NEWMAN PITNER GALIGER.

JOHN MARTIN NEWMAN, at the age of 76, died at the family homestead in Lufkin, Texas on April 7, 1877. FLORA ANN WILLIS NEWMAN died on January 2, 1881. Both are buried in Newman Cemetery, Lufkin, Angelina County, Texas.

JOHN WILLIAM NEWMAN

JOHN WILLIAM NEWMAN, first child of Martin and Flora Ann Newman, was born March 26, 1824. He married MARTHA ANN JIMERSON on November 7, 1843. William died as recorded in the Newman Bible, on January 18, 1860 and his burial place in unknown. Martha Ann was born June 7, 1824 in Georgia. There is a conflict between the death of William and the remarriage of his wife Martha Ann JIMERSON. She married in 1858 William HUNT in Panola County, and it is not known if they were divorced or if the date of his death is in error. After the death or divorce from William, Martha Ann migrated to Texas to be with her family. Martha Ann had a twin brother WILLIAM A. JIMERSON, who married the sister of William Newman, POLLY ANN ZABECCA NEWMAN. In 1853, Martha Ann was in the state of Louisiana either on a journey to or from Texas and their fourth child was born.

1. THOMAS M. NEWMAN, first child of John William and Martha Ann Newman, was born 1844 in Alabama. He married TEMPE ANN COOPER on November 23, 1878. To this union was born MARGARET NEWMAN in 1879. Thomas later married H. A. HUGHES on January 26, 1889.

2. DAVID NEWMAN, second child of John William and Martha Ann Newman, was born 1846 in Alabama. He married REBECCA last name unknown. They are listed in the 1880 census in Travis County, Texas. In the 1900 census of Travis County there is no other record but three of their children.

3. MARY ALICE/ANN NEWMAN, third child of William and Martha Ann Newman, was born 1848 in Alabama. Mary married H. M. JONES on July 27, 1881. Mary is buried in Liberty Baptist Cemetery. For years her gave was unmarked. it is presently marked with a hand made marker. Her middle name in some records appears and Alice and/or Ann. Since if it not known which is correct, both are recorded for future reference.

4. JAMES HENRY NEWMAN, fourth child of William and Martha Ann Newman, was born in 1853 in Louisiana. James married HARRIET ETTA JONES on December 18,1877. James later married ELIZABETH J. HENDRICKS on June 19, 1886. She was born in May 1855.

FLORENCE ALMA "ALLIE" NEWMAN

b. FLORENCE ALMA  "ALLIE" NEWMAN, second child of James Henry and Harriett Etta Jones Newman, was born December 17, 1884.  She married SILVESTER NEWTON SWAIN.  He was born February 6, 1874 and died on January 4, 1952.  Allie died on January 7, 1942.  Both are buired in Palestine, Texas.

4)   EVIA LEE SWAIN, fourth child of Silvester and Allie Newman Swain, was born January 1, 1905.  She married ALBERT LEE KELLEY who was born on June 25, 1905 in Henderson, Texas.  He died on October 23, 1980.    Evia died on January 14, 1993.  Both are buied in San Jacinto Gardens, Harris County, Texas.

a)   EUNICE RUTH KELLEY, first child of Albert and Evia Swain Kelley, was born January 26, 1926.  She married first EARL CLIFTON SMITH.  To this union MARY FRANCES SMITH was born April 30, 1945.  Eunice Ruth married second time FRED PENNINGTON

The children of Fred and Eunice Pennington:

1a   MARY FRANCES PENNINGTON, child of  Fred and Eunice Pennington, was born April 30, 1945 in Hightlands, Texas.  She married JOHN GLENDAL MARTIN on August 31, 1963 . He was born February 20, 1943.  He was in the U.S. Marine Corp and was stationed in California and Hawaii.

The children of Glendall and Frances Martin:

1b  KELLY LYNN MARTIN, first child of Glendal and Frances Martin, was born January 26, 1969 in Oaka, Hawaii.  She married THOMAS EDWARD WALKER and to this union AUSTIN WALKER and MAKAYLA WALKER were born.

2b  SCOTT RANDAL MARTIN, second child of Glendal and Frances Martin, was born JUNE 16, 1971 in Houston, Texas.  He married ANGELA LORRAINE CLEMENTS and to this union KURSTIN ALEXANDER MARTIN was born.

2a  GLENN REAGAN PENNINGTON, second child of Fred and Eunice Pennington, was born February 27, 1951 in Pasadena, Texas.  He married SHARON LYNN BORSHI on June 18, 1971.  To this union GLENN R. PENNINGTON, born March 29, 1972, FRED PENNINGTON, born July 25, 1974 and JAMES ROBERT PENNINGTON, born April 12, 1978.

    4)  ELSIE NEWMAN, child of John Thomas and Etta Newman, was born September 16, 1909 in _______________.  She married first ELZA LEWIS RAMSEY on February 10, 1934.  Lewis was bon on June 22, 1901 in  ________________. He died on November 28, 1970 and is buried in Tennessee Cemetery, Shelby County, Texas.  Elsie married second time HENRY HOUGHTON on ________________ in_________________. He was born June 14, 1915 in Jasper County Texas.  To this union no children were born.

    a) KENNETH RAMSEY, first child of Elsie and Lewis Ramsey, was born March 23, 1936 in Shelby County, Texas.  He married Loretta ____________. To this union was born DANA SCOTT RAMSEY, August 3, 1962 and KIMBERLY ANN RAMSEY, October 1, 1965, 

    b) JOHN CHARLES RAMSEY, second child of Elsie and Lewis Ramsey, was born May 23, 1943 in Crowley, Louisiana.  He married JANET ARMS on January 17, 1969.  To this union was born JOHN CHARLES RAMSEY II, AUGUST 4, 1969, JAMES MONROE RAMSEY, AUGUST 4, 1969, JASON RAMSEY, December 9, 1977 and JESSICA RAMSEY, February 1, 1982.

   c) LEROY RAMSEY, third child of Elsie and Lewis Ramsey, was born November 12, 1946 in Palestine, Texas.   He married JANE ADAMS.  She was born December 25, 1948.   To this union was born CHAD RAMSEY, September 16, 1970, DAVID RAMSEY, April 24, 1976 and Marianne, July 9, 1980.

 

The children of Jams Henry and Elizabeth Hendricks Newman:

         e..   EUGENE NEWMAN, second child of James Henry and Elizabeth Newman, was born November 11, 1889.  He married first SUSIE GIBSON and to this union FRANCES NEWMAN was born.   Eugene married second time LUCY REBECCA DICKERSON on May 4, 1919 in Panola County, Texas.  Rebecca was born on March 20, 1888. She was the daughter of ALBERT and AMANDA JANE HORTON DICKERSON.   She was previously married to WILLIAM TYLER and to this union MARY, BERTHA and WILLIAM HERMAN TYLER were born.  Eugene was a farmer and was in the military service as a Pvt in 56th Infantry 7th Division as recorded on his gravestone.  His face was shot up in the war and he was a decorated hero.     Rebecca died on December 4, 1971 in Carthage, Texas.  Eugene died on May 1, 1938 in Carthage, Texas.  Both are buried in Adams Cemetery, Logan, Texas.

    1. GRACIE NEWMAN, first child of Eugene and Lucy Rebecca Newman, was born September 20, 1912.  She died on January 10, 1913 and is buried in Adams Cemetery, Logan, Texas.

    2.ALLEN RABON NEWMAN,second child of Eugene and Rebecca Newman, was born   December 26, 1919 in Logan, Texas.  He married RUTHIE LEE FOSTER on December 31, 1939 in Shelbyville, Texas.  Ruthie was the daughter of WILLIAM ERNEST FOSTER and NORA BELL AVERY (AVERA). Allen Rabon died on October 27, 1990 in Carthage, Texas and is buried Adams Cemetery, Logan, Texas.

a)  BETTY MARIE NEWMAN, first child of Allen Rabon and Ruthie Lee Newman, was born October 25, 1940 in Norfolk, Virginia.  She married JAMES PAUL HULLUM on April 20, 1957 in Dallas, Texas.  They were divorced and she married second time EDMUND LUTHER DALRIMPLE in California on January 19, 1970.  She died on June 21, 1996 and is buried in Adams Cemetery, Logan, Texas.

The children of James Paul and Betty Marie Hullum:

    1a  SCOTTY LYNN HULLUM, first child of James and Betty Hullum, was born December 25, 1957 in Dallas, Texas.  He married MAXINE NANCY KEYES on February 9, 1980 in Hot Springs, Arkansas.   She was born on November 12, 1954 in Mankato, Minnesota and is the daughter of BEAUFORD WILLARD KEYES and AIMEE ARVILLA WOOD.   She is employed as a Pre-School Teacher.  To this union MICHAEL RICHARD   HULLUM, born May 29, 1984 and  JUSTIN JAMES HULLUM born July 28, 1981.

    2a  RICHARD BRETT HULLUM, second child of James and Betty Hullum, was born March 6, 1959 in Dallas, Texas.  He married ANNE MICHELLE HALPIN on April 12, 1986 in San Diego, California.  She is the daughter of LARRY and RITA MARIE HALPIN.  To this union RICHARD JAMES HULLUM, born March 3, 1985, LINDSEY RAE HULLUM, born January 13, 1987, MITCHELL CHRISTOPHER HULLUM, born September 27, 1988, TAYLOR MARIE HULLUM, born May 9, 1990 and RYAN ALLEN HULLUM, born February 14, 1992. 

b)  GLADYS GENE NEWMAN, second child of Allen Rabon and Ruthie Lee Newman, was born August 7, 1942 in Norfolk, Virginia.  She married first to TOMMY PRITCHETT on February 14, 1959 in Duran, Oklahoma.  They were divorced and she later married BILL MC DONALD on March 17, 1995.

The children of Tommy and Gladys Pritchett:

     1a  TOMMY JOE PRITCHETT, JR., first child of Tommy and Gladys Pritchett, was born February 3, 1960 in Dallas, Texas.  He married TABATHA ROMINE on March 23, 1985 in Winnsboro, Texas. She is the daughter of JOHN ROMINE AND CLARA PRICE.  To this union ALEX PRITCHETT, born July 23, 1986, LESLIE PRITCHETT, born December 31, 1987 and ANGIE PRITCHETT, born September 12, 1989.

    2a  TAMMY JEAN PRITCHETT, second child of Tommy and Gladys Pritchett, was born August 2, 1961 in Dallas, Texas.  She married WALTER RILEY in Carthage, Texas.  To this union was APRIL RILEY, born August 3, 1979 and JAMES RILEY, born August 14, 1981.

    4a  TRACY LYNN PRITCHETT, fourth child of Tommy and Gladys Pritchett, was born September 17, 1963 in Dallas, Texas.  He married PENNY ANN BASHAM in Teneha, Texas.  To this union JESSE PRITCHETT, born September 20, 1985 and ASHLEY PRITCHETT, born September 17, 1984.  

c)  ALLEN RABON NEWMAN, JR. third child of Allen Rabon and Ruthie Newman, was born June 9, 1947 in Logansport, Louisiana.  He married LINDA COLLINSWORTH on December 21, 1968 in Duncanville, Texas.

    1)  TAMMY NEWMAN, first child of Allen and Linda Newman, was born August 31, 1969 in Dallas, Texas.  She married _________ CASSADY.  To this union KATY BETH CASSADY was born.

    2)  KIMBERLY NEWMAN, second child of Allen and Linda Newman, was born December 9, 1971.  She married ________   Fisher.  To this union CARRIE ELIZABETH FISHER, born August 14, 1988 and KRISTEN FISHER, born _______.   A son was also born, but no data available.

d)  BRENDA GAIL NEWMAN, fourth child of Allen Rabon and Ruthie Newman, was born March 24, 1949 in Port Arthur, Texas.  She married BLACKIE GIBBS on August 12, 1967 in Deberry, Texas.  He was the son of MINOR W. GIBBS and NOBIE M. TIMMONS and was born on April 1, 1946 in Deberry, Texas..  Blackie served in the military during the Vietnam conflict from 1964-1967.

The children of Blackie and Brenda Gibbs:

e)  CAROLYN LYNN NEWMAN, fifth child of Allen and Ruthie Newman, was born July 20, 1950 in Carthage, Texas.  She married GERALD LEE KUNTZ on October 11, 1969 in Carthage, Texas.  Gerald was born on August 31, 1945 in Hibbing, Minnesota.  His parents were NORMAN KUNTZ and KATHERINE EILEEN HAYES. To this union RACHAEL MARIE KUNTZ was born September 1, 1978.  Gerald was previously married to SHARON EDMOND and came  to this union with KARI JO KUNTZ and SCOTT KUNTZ. They were divorced in September 1983.   Carolyn is a Mental Health Counselor.

f) STEPHEN JOEL NEWMAN, sixth child of Allen and Ruthie Newman, was born March 4, 1953 in Dallas, Texas.  He married DONNA HARPER on July 13, 1979 in Deberry, Texas.  They were divorced on December 29, 1983.  To this union KAREN MICHELLE NEWMAN was born July 5, 1980.

g)  JERRY DWAINE NEWMAN, seventh child of Allen and Ruthie Newman, was born January 19, 1955 in Dallas, Texas.  He married DONNA KELLY in Tyler, Texas.  To this union JOHN FRANKLIN ALLEN NEWMAN, born October 1, 1978 and REAGAN KELLY NEWMAN, born January 16, 1982.   They were divorced and Jerry married PAM BECALL in Dallas, Texas.   To this union ANDREA NEWMAN, born July 2, 1989 and MATTHEW NEWMAN, born 1990..

h) DAVID RANDALL NEWMAN, eighth child of Allen and Ruthie Newman, was born February 22, 1957 in Dallas, Texas.  He married SHARON COMBS on December 14, 1979 in Tyler, Texas.  She was born October 4, 1954 and is the daughter of ELMO L. COMBS and BILLIE JOYCE VINCENT.   They were divorced on November 17, 1995..  To this union AMY MELISSA NEWMAN was born August 24, 1984.

3.  CARL JAMES NEWMAN, third child of Eugene and Lucy Newman, was born July 24, 1921 in Shreveport, Louisiana.  He married first OLETA GOODWIN in April 1946.  To this union no children were born.  The marriage ended and Carl married second time ANNIE IVIE DALE HOOPER in 1947.  Ivie Dale was born March 18, 1919 in Logan, Texas and died January 24, 1984 in Carthage, Texas.  Carl and Ivie are buried in Reeves Cemetery, Logan, Texas. 

The children of Carl and Annie Ivie Dale Newman:

a)  JAMES FRANKLIN NEWMAN, first child of Carl and Ivie Newman, was born November 26, 1948 in Henderson, Texas.   He married GAYLE STOVALL in July 1967.  To this union LEIGH, WOLF and ERIC NEWMAN were born. He was employed as Supervior of the Bossier Parish Tax Collecting Agency of the Bossier Parish Sheriff's Office in Louisiana.  James died during a hunting trip to Colorado on September 15, 1999.  He is buried in Haughton, Louisiana.

b) CHARLES RICHARD NEWMAN, second child of Carl and Ivie Newman, was born in March, 1950 in Henderson, Texas.  He married BARBARA FARMER of the Galloway Community in Panola County, Texas. To this union CHEYNA and VANCE NEWMAN were born.   Richard served in the United States Navy and attained the rank of Lieutenant.  He now employed as an engineer at the Texas Eastman plant in Longview, Texas. 

c) SYLVIA JANE NEWMAN, third child of Carl and Ivie Newman, was born in 1952 in Dallas, Texas.  She married  first JAMES OLIVER MCGEE II in 1974 in West Memphis, Arkansas.  To this union JAMES OLIVER MCGEE III was born.  She married second time JERRY FULGHUM.   To this union SCOTT FULGHUM was born.  Sylvia married third time to KENNETH GRIES. She currently works with her husband Ken as respiratory therapists in Schumpert Hospital in Shreveport, Louisiana.

d) OLLIE GENE NEWMAN, fourth child of Carl and Ivie Newman, was born May 30, 1954 in Dallas, Texas.  She married RANDY FARMER in 1971.  Randy was a preacher and they moved to North Carolina and later moved  to Texas.  To this union JAMES and JOHN FARMER were born.  Ollie and Randy were divorced in early 1980's and she married JOHN DEWITT of New York.  He worked for ARKLA Gas in Shreveport, Louisiana.   They later purchased the Carl Newman homestead in Logan, Texas.   John and Ollie were divorced and Ollie married MOE SALVAGGIO, which she later divorced and remarried John Dewitt.  They reside today (2000) at the Carl Newman homestead in Logan, Texas.

e)  RAYBON JOEL "JOE" NEWMAN,  fifth child of Carl and Ivie Newman, was born January 23, 1956 in Dallas, Texas.  He married REGINA HOPE DORRIS of Hammond, Indiana on May 23, 1981 In Minneapolis, Minnesota while studing for the ministry of North Central University. To this union TRENTON JOEL NEWMAN was born.  Joe is an ordained minister in teh Assemblies of God and have pastored churches in Texas, Arkansas and Louisiana.   He currently, teach history at the First Assembly Christian School in Memphis, Tennessee. He obtained a Ph.D in history from the University of Memphis. 

f)  LILLY REBECCA NEWMAN, sixth child of Carl and Ivie Newman, was born September 7, 1963 in Carthage, Texas.  She married first JOHN SMITH in 1981 in Carthage, Texas.   To this union AMBERLY and CARRIE SMITH were born.  She married second time LOUIS HARRIS from Shreveport. They were divorced and she is resides in Shreveport and is employed in food service at a local nursing home.

4. GENIE FAYE NEWMAN, fourth child of Eugene and Lucy Newman, was born April 27, 1924.  She married first CLAUDE HESSER on November 4, 1939.  To this union SALLIE JOE HESSER was born October 15, 1944 and died February 8, 1955.  Genie Faye later married DAVID COLE on October 11, 1946.  To this union JOHNNY WAYNE COLE, born March 23, 1948 and MICHAEL COLE was born. David was previously married and came to this union WYNONA COLE, JERRY COLE, VIRGINIA COLE and DIANE COLE.

 

Martha Ann Jimerson Newman married second time to WILLIAM MARSHALL HUNT December 18, 1859, as recorded in the Panola County, Texas marriage records. To this union was born SAM H., WILLIAM, M. and JOSEPH L. HUNT. William HUNT died July 6, 1906 and is buried in Rusk County, Texas. Martha Ann Jimerson Newman Hunt died January 1906 and is buried in Rusk County, Texas.

LOUISA ANN SAMADA NEWMAN

LOUISA ANN SAMANDA NEWMAN, fifth child of Martin and Flora Ann Newman, was born October 25, 1831 in Tallapoosa County, Alabama. Louisa, age 18, married first HOMER SMITH. Louisa married second time to a BENNETT. Her Great Grand-Daughter, ETHEL SMITH, lives in a Nursing Home in Port Arthur, Texas (1987). No other of her descendants are known. Louisa died, age 71, April 26, 1902 and is buried in Newman Cemetery, Lufkin, Texas.

SARAH ANN ELIZABETH NEWMAN

SARAH ANN ELIZABETH NEWMAN, seventh child of Martin and Flora Ann Newman, was born January 8, 1838 in Tallapoosa County, Alabama. Sarah first married a BLACKBURN. Her second marriage was to JAMES SAMUEL COOK. Jim died on December 31, 1925 and is buried in Newman Cemetery, Lufkin, Texas. Sarah Ann died on July 15, 1907 an is buried in Newman Cemetery, Lufkin, Texas. The Bible records her date of birth as January 8, 1838 and her cemetery marker list it as January 8, 1834. It is believed that the cemetery marker is in error, due to the fact that her sister Polly was born April 1, 1834.

2. OLLIE PEARL COOK, child of James and Sarah Cook, was born on October 9, 1872. She married JOHN ROBERT WEEKS. She married second time THOMAS DOWNEY in Lufkin, Texas on December 4, 1901. 1) MYRTLE MAY DOWNEY, daughter of Thomas and Rosa Downey, was born June 24, 1933 in Port Arthur, Texas.. She married ALVIN STEPHENS in 1951 and to this union THOMAS WATTS STEPHENS was born. 3. FLORENCE COOK, child of Jim and Sarah Ann Cook married a BULLOCK. To this union ED BULLOCK and ETHEL BULLOCK were born. In the Newman Cemetery is buried D. BULLOCK, born 1900 and died in 1960. It is unknown if this is related to this family line.

BENJAMIN FRANKLIN NEWMAN

BENJAMIN FRANKLIN NEWMAN, eighth child of Martin and Flora Ann Newman, was born April 3, 1840 in Tallapoosa County, Alabama. Benjamin is listed in the 1860 of Shelby County, Texas. On February 19, 1862, age 21, he enlisted in the Confederate Army as a Private in Company D, Texas Infantry, Shelbyville, Texas under the command of Col. O. M. Roberts. The Martin Newman Bible records the death of Benjamin, age 23, as January 1, 1863. He probably died in the Civil War.

GEORGE WASHINGTON NEWMAN

GEORGE WASHINGTON NEWMAN, tenth child of Martin and Flora Ann Newman, was born August 1, 1844 in Tallapoosa County, Alabama. George was listed in the Shelby County Census in 1860. Like his brother Benjamin, on February 19, 1862, he enlisted in the Confederate Army as a Private in Company D. Texas Infantry, Shelbyville, Texas. The Military Records show his age as 18, but he was only 16 at the time. When he enlisted he change the spelling of his name to NEUMAN. No further record if found of GEORGE WASHINGTON NEWMAN, it it not known if he died in the Civil War or returned to Texas or another state.

ADLINE VIRGINIA NEWMAN

ADLINE VIRGINIA NEWMAN, eleventh child of Martin and Flora Ann Newman, was born October 16, 1846. She was listed in the 1860 census of Shelby County, Texas, age 13. This is the last record of VIRGINIA. However, later appears a VICTORIA NEWMAN, also known as "AUNT VIC" to the relatives of the Flora Ann Newman Yarbrough and the Blackburn Families. They stated she was the daughter of Martin Newman. The age at her death as recorded in the Bible would confirm that she and Virginia would be the same age. Aunt Vic married ADAM PITNER, and she had one son that was name ADAM PITNER, JR. After the death of Adam she married TOM GALIGER. Tom Galiger died and is buried in Newman Cemetery, Lufkin, Texas. After his death, Aunt Vic became mentally disturbed so much to the point that she would only sit on her bed wearing her mans hat and dipping her snuff. She only took the noon meal and would return to her place on the bed. Her physical condition and personal hygiene became so unbearable that the male members of the family had to physically wash her and cut her hair. Aunt Vic or Adline Virginia Newman, age 82, died on January 21, 1929 and is buried in Newman Cemetery, Lufkin, Texas.
