The BLACKBURN FAMILY

MARTIN NEWMAN

MARTIN NEWMAN, son of John Newman and Polly Newman, was born June 23, 1802 in Richmond County, Georgia. John Martin Newman married FLORA ANN WILLIS on January 30, 1823. This source is "Richmond County, Georgia, Georgia DAR Vol. II, Records of Richmond County, Georgia, 1929 Historical Collections of Georgia Chapters." and sec by William Newman (maybe this could be a sibling of John Martin).

In the 1860 census of Shelby County, Texas, in the Community of Buena Vista, Martin Newman name was given and JOHN NEWMAN. There seems to be quite a few erros in the names and spelling plus the information is sloppy. The person furnishing the data could have been very young or the census taker was poor. Persons living in the household at that time were:

The above census was taken on July 28, 1860. The following census in the same area, Buena Vista, was taken on July 26 1860:

It is not know why A. J. or D. C. Brandon used two different names, but in the Martin Newman Bible is recorded "D.C. Brandon died December 7, 1862".

IN 1870 Martin Newman received an Excess Land Grant of 160 acres from the State of Texas. This is recorded in the land records of Angelina County, Texas. The property is located on what is now Highway 103 about seven miles from Lufkin, Texas. The Newman Cemetery is located on part of lthis property. It is the burial place of Martin Newman, his wife Flora Ann Newman and four of his daughters, SARAH ANN ELIZABETH NEWMAN COOK, LOUISA ANN NEWMAN BENNETT, FLORA ANN NEWMAN BRANDON YARBROUGH and ADLINE VIRGINIA NEWMAN PITNER GALIGER. Each year on the second Saturday of June a reunion is held at the Newman Cemetery. The Cemetery can be visited today, not much has changed from the time Martin was buried. Martin Newman died, age 76, April 7, 1877. Flora Ann Newman died on January 2, 1881.

FLORA ANN NEWMAN BRANDON

FLORA ANN NEWMAN, ninth child of Martin and Flora Ann Newman, was born June 26, 1842 in Alabama. She married Dewitt "D.C." Brandon. To this union MARGARET JANE "MAGGIE" BRANDON was born in 1861.   The story goes that D. C. was awol from the Military and at this time the daughter was concieved.  He was killed in a battle in the Civil War. Some members of the family say he died of measles after the war. D.C. Brandon's death is listed in the Newman Bible as December 7, 1862. His burial place is unknown, however since his date of death is recorded he is probably buried at Newman Cemetery, Lufkin, Texas and the grave marker has been lost.  Flora married the second time to NIMROD PINCKNEY YARBROUGH .  Flora Ann Newman Brandon died March 25, 1900 and is buried in Newman Cemetery, Lufkin, Texas near her second husband Nimrod Pinckney Yarbrough.

MARGARET JANE "MAGGIE" BRANDON, only child of D.C. and Flora Ann Newman Brandon, was born in 1861 in Texas. She married ANDREW JACKSON BLACKBURN in 1878. Jack died in 1926 at his home near Crawford Creek, off Highway 103, Lufkin, Texas. Maggie died May 30, 1930. Her death certificate reads "CAUSE OF DEATH: Cirobosio(?) Of Liver, Nephritis Organs and Heart Auosarca(?) And Acuties." Jack and Maggie are buried in Newman Cemetery, Lufkin, Texas.

 

FLORA ESTELLE "TILLIE" BLACKBURN

a. FLORA ESTELLE "TILLIE" BLACKBURN, first child of Jack and Maggie Blackburn, was born November 2, 1880. She married WILLARD ANDERSON on September 16, 1900 in Angelina County, Texas. Willard died August 29, 1954 and is buried in Largent Cemetery, Lufkin, Texas. Tillie died September 7, 1943 and is buried in Largent Cemetery, Lufkin, Texas.

1. MARJORIE EMMA ANDERSON, first child of William and Flora Anderson, was born September 2, 1901. She married ASHLEY GREEN JOHNSON. Ashley Green served during World War I in Europe. Marjorie died January 7, 1986 in Lufkin, Texas. Marjorie and Ashley are buried in Garden of Memories Cemetery, Lufkin, Texas.

a) RENA FLO JOHNSON, first child of Ashley and Marjorie Johnson, married CARMON MAURICE Thompson. Rena died August 27, 1997 in Galveston, Texas and is buried in Conroe, Texas. Camron died April 18, 1889 and is buried Conroe, Texas.

1a. ALAN LANG THOMPSON, first child of Camron and Rena Thompson, married KAREN ELIZABETH GREEN on March 5, 1971. She was born on  March 9, 1949 in Cleveland, Texas. To this union APRIL LYNN AND LISA DIANE THOMPSON, twins, were born June 3, 1974 in  Conroe, Texas..

2a. LARRY WAYNE THOMPSON, second child of Camron and Rena Thompson, was born June 26, 1950. He married PATRICIA A. THOMPKINS on July 5, 1970. She was born July 11, 1952.  . To this union DAMON RYAN THOMPSON, born April 28, 1978 and CARA BETH THOMPSON, born September 18, 1979.

3a. NILA THOMPSON, third child of Camron and Rena Thompson, was born January 10, 1956.  She  married RONALD WILLIAM CIESIEL on January 14, 1978.  Ron was born in New York, New York on April 19, 1952.

b. LEMA JOE JOHNSON, second child of Ashley and Marjorie Johnson, was born March 22, 1927. She married ELZY "SLICK" THOMPSON on October 21, 1946. He was born October 4, 1919. To this union MARK ASHLEY THOMPSON was born October 5, 1959.

1a. MARK ASHLEY THOMPSON, first child of Slick and Lema Thompson, was born October 5, 1959. He married PATRICIA LANE BEMELMAN on July 3, 1981. To this union ASHLEY LANE THOMPSON was born December 24, 1985.

2. NANCY GANELL ANDERSON, second child of William and Flora Anderson, was born April 29, 1904 in Clawson, Texas. She married IRA ALFRED MCDONALD on May 2, 1925 in Lufkin, Texas. Alfred was born July 4, 1905. His parents were JAMES HANIBLE MCDONALD and MARY ELLA HUGHES. He died October 17, 1969 in Freeport, Texas. He is buried in Largent Cemetery, Lufkin, Texas.

a. JIM BILLY MCDONALD, first child of Ira and Nancy McDonald, died on May 9, 1926.

b. OLA MARIE MCDONALD, second child of Ira and Nancy McDonald, was born June 11, 1927 in Lufkin, Texas. She married LOUIE S. KITCHEN on November 27, 1944 in Lufkin, Texas. Louis was born in Hazelhurst, Georgia and grew up in Tampa, Florida. His parents were BENJAMIN HENDRIX and ALLIE ELVER SURRENCY KITCHEN. Louis served in the Merchant Marines during World War II. He spent time in the North Atlantic and the South Pacific. Married is a Licensed Vocational Nurse.

1a. TILLIE A. KITCHEN, first child of Louie and Marie Kitchen, was born April 10, 1946 in Lufkin, Texas. She married CLIFFORD WAYNE RUSSELL.

1b. TROY WAYNE RUSSELL, first child Clifford and Russell, was born September 9, 1966 in Freeport, Texas. He died in an automobile accident, age 18, on November 1, 1984. He is buried in Sweeney Cemetery, Sweeney, Texas.

2b. KIMBERLEY KAY RUSSELL, second child of Cliford and Tillie Russell, was born October 5, 1968 in Freeport, Texas. She married CHARLES WAYNE BERRY September 24, 1988. To this union JAKE ASHTON BERRY was born March 18, 1990 in Bay City, Texas.

Tillie A. Kitchen married second time to JAMES RAY WILLIAMS, June 14, 1978. They live in Sweeney, Texas.

3. CURTIS PINCKNEY ANDERSON, third and twin child of Willard and Tillie Anderson, was born August 17, 1905 in Angelina County, Texas. Curtis was known as WINTHROP ANDERSON. He married MARCELLA EASLEY. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II and was stationed in Iceland and New Guinea in the South Pacific. To this union HARRY ANDERSON was born. He later Married Susanne, last name unknown. They live in Grand Prairie, Texas.

4. CHESTER JAMES ANDERSON, fourth and twin child of Williard and Tillie Anderson, was born August 17, 1905 in Angelina County, Texas. He died December 25, 1918 during the Flu Epidemic at age 12 and is buried in Largent Cemetery, Lufkin, Texas.

Curtis and Chester were not identical twins. Curtis had dark hair, loved to have a good time: sometimes by teasing his sisters, or even wrecking havoc with their dolls. Chester was a serious child, took pride in his work and appearance. He had dark auburn curly hair. Nell Anderson remembers how Chester could plow a straight row equal to any adult. Neighbors often asked him to "Lay-Out" their fields.

5. MARGARET THELMA ANDERSON, fifth child Willard and Tillie Anderson, was born June 30, 1909 in Angelina County, Texas. She married V. E. FUTCH. He is buried in Largent Cemetery, Lufkin, Texas. To this union V. E. Jr., Nannie Sue, James Willard, Jackie Lee and patricia Curtis were born.

6. HOBBY ANDERSON, sixth child of Willard and Tillie Anderson, was born June 23, 1918 in Angelina County, Texas. He died from complications of Polio and is buried in Largent Cemetery, Lufkin, Texas.

SARAH LOUISE "DINK" BLACKBURN

b. SARAH LOUISE "DINK" BLACKBURN, second child of Jack and Maggie Blackburn, was born September 10, 1882. She married LESTER THOMAS "DOCK" ALDREDGE on May 8, 1904. He died April 13, 1960 and she died October 16, 1977 and both are buried in Newman Cemetery, Lufkin, Texas.

1) MELVIN H. ALDREDGE, first child of Dock and Dick Aldredge, was born October 18, 1907. He married ETNA ARLINA DUE in 1931. Etna was born December 20, 1916. Melvin died June 21,1995 and is buried in Newman Cemetery, Lufkin, Texas. The Children

a) BETTY ALDREDGE, first child of Melvin and Etna Aldredge, was born December 9, 1933. She married RAMSEY ROACH on December 24, 1955. Ramsey was born December 17, 1919. Betty died December 12, 1978.

b) MARION ALDREDGE, second child of Melvin and Etna Aldredge, was born March 26, 1936. He married JOAN MCCLURE BRYAN. She was born May 11, 1935.

1a. CHARLES Theodore "Bryan" ALDREDGE, first child of Marion and Joan Aldredge, was born March 13, 1956. He married BEVERLY ANN LEWIS on January 1, 1982. She was born April 5, 1989. To this union TERESA LYNN and REBECCA ANN ALDREDGE were born October 30, 1983 and April 5, 1989.

2a. KATHERINE ANN ALDREDGE, second child of Marion and Joan Aldredge, was born June 111, 1964. She married BARRENDRA ABARRY@ BAHADOORSINGH on May 21, 1989. He was born January 12, 1965. To this union DEVEN CHRISTIAN and GALEN CHASE BAHADOORSINGH were born May 7, 1991 and July 24, 1993.

3a. THOMAS GEORGE ALDREDGE, third child of Marion and Joan Aldredge, was born May 7, 1966. He married TANYA LYNN HALL on August 22, 1991. To this union JESSICA LYNN AND ASHLEY ALDREDGE were born September 23, 1991 and January 1994.

4a. ROBERT ALLEN ALDREDGE, fourth child of Marion and Joan Aldredge, was born February 13, 1968. He married MICHELLE DEANN DRISKILL on August 31, 1990.

c) DELBERT WAYNE ALDREDGE, third child of Melvin and Etna Aldredge, was born June 20, 1944. He married DORIS HELEN BROWN on December 24, 1960. She was born May 10, 1944.

1a. MICHAEL WAYNE ALDREDGE, first child of Delbert and Doris Aldredge, was born September 11, 1962. He married JANET MARIE EDWARD. She was born February 20, 1964. To this union NICHOLAS MICHAEL and KYLE ALEXANDER ALDREDGE was born July 19, 1987 and January 20, 1993.

2a. RICKY DON ALDREDGE, second child of Delbert and Doris Aldredge, was born January 24, 1964. He married KELLY THOMPSON. She was born April 5, 1967.

d) EMILY ELAINE ALDREDGE, fourth child of Melvin and Etna Aldredge, was born June 3, 1946. She married JAMES CARLTON DEARING. He was born in 1943. She died September 29, 1966 and is buried in Newman Cemetery, Lufkin, Texas.

1a. JAMES BOYD DEARING, child of James and Emily Dearing, was born March 4, 1963. He married JOAN PILLOWS. She was born in 1963. To this union DASHA DENISE and J. B. DEARING were born July 31, 1962 and November 19. 1987.

e) BONITA ARLENE ALDREDGE, fifth child of Melvin and Etna Aldredge, was born May 6, 1953. She married JAY CHRISTOPHER THOMAS on January 23, 1971. To this union WENDY ELAINE THOMAS was still born January 1, 1972 and LAYLA MICHELLE THOMAS was born March 23, 1973. Bonita and Jay were divorced in 1975. She later married DENNIS NEAL MANTHEI on December 12, 1975. To this union JASON CARL MANTHEI was born June 1, 1978.

2) HARVEY ALDREDGE, second child of Dock and Dink Aldredge, was born December 25, 1909. He married EFFIE BEA LANDRUM. Effie was born October 23, 1914. Harvey died May 19, 1978 and is buried in Newman Cemetery, Lufkin, Texas.

a) NORVAL ALDREDGE, first child of Harvey and Effie Aldredge, was born November 24, 1937. He married GERTRUDE B. HUDSON. She was born October 23, 1941.

1a. CHARLES S. ALDREDGE, first child of Norval and Gertrude Aldredge, was born October 2, 1959. He married CINDY TOWNSEND. To this union CODY C. and CRISTEN T. ALDREDGE were born September 5, 1981 and August 1, 1986.

2a. BEVERLY S. ALDREDGE, second child of Norval and Gertrude Aldredge, was born December 15, 1960. She married STEVE MAGEE and to this union DUSTIN H. and SARA G. MAGEE were born September 5, 1981 and August 30, 1983.

3a. BRIAN K. ALDREDGE, third child of Norval and Gertrude Aldredge, was born January 15, 1961. He married PAT CONWAY. To this union CHASE K., CHELSEA R. and COURTNEY ALDREDGE were born July 8, 19??, April 28, 1990 and November 9, 1994.

4a. KIMBERLY ANN ALDREDGE, fourth child of Norval and Gertrude, was born November 26, 1962. She married TRAVIS SMITH. To this union EMILY SMITH was born September 19, 1993.

3) LESTER ALDREDGE, third child of Dock and Dink Aldredge, was born April 15, 1913. He married CLARINE DUE on February 2, 1935. Clarine was born December 18, 1919. Lester died March 25, 1992 and is buried in Newman Cemetery, Lufkin, Texas.

a) MARVELL ALDREDGE, first child of Lester and Clarine Aldredge, was born August 20, 1936. She married first KENNETH FARIES. They were divorced and she later married OWEN BLINSKY. To these unions no children were born. Marvell is a Legal Secretary and lives in Lufkin, Texas.

b) THOMAS BRANDON ALDREDGE, second child of Lester and Clarine Aldredge, was born August 9, 1938. He married MARY LOU HALL.

1a. LOU ANN ALDREDGE, first child of Brandon and Mary Aldredge, was March 24, 1958. She died October 1979 and is buried in Lufkin, Texas.

2a. THOMAS BRANDON ALDREDGE, JR., second child of Brandon and Mary Lou Aldredge, was born July 6, 1959. He married Shaun (last name unknown). To this union CHELSIE ALDREDGE was born March 1988.

3a. ROGER L. ALDREDGE, third child of Brandon and Mary Lou Aldredge, was born November 11, 1961. He married JEAN DELANDY. To this union BRANDON WAYNE and CULLEN JAMES ALDREDGE were born February 28, 1983 and February 25, 1986.

Thomas Brandon Aldredge, Sr. later married PEGGY KIRKLAND. To this union no children were born. Thomas Brandon Aldredge, Sr. February 8, 1984.

c) EVELYN LOUISE ALDREDGE, third child of Lester and Clarine Aldredge, was born March 30, 1946. She married WILLIAM KENDELL KIRKLAND June 22, 1963. William was born February 1, 1945. They live in Pollok, Texas.

1a. TINA LOUISE KIRKLAND, first child of William and Louise Kirkland, was born April 20, 1964. She married first to PHILLIP SHARP in 1982. To this union PHILLIP BRANDON SHARP was born September 14, 1983. William and Evelyn Louise Aldredge Kirkland are raising Phillip as their own in their household. Tina married second time to WILLIE BRYAN and to this union BREANNA AND NOEL BRYAN were born July 18, 1992 and December 24, 1994.

JESSE DEWITT "BOSEN" BLACKBURN

1). JESSE GENE BLACKBURN, first child of Chester and Verdell Blackburn, was born April 17, 1946. He married KATRINA MILLER. To this union SHELDON and LANNELL BLACKBURN were born.

2). KATHRYN BLACKBURN, second child of Chester and Verdell Blackburn, was born November 29, 1953. She married ROY MCGOR. To this union ROY EARL and CHRISTOPHER EDWARD MCGOR were born.

3). BARBARA BLACKBURN, third child of Chester and Verdell Blackburn, was born November 14, 1958. She married JAMES BROWN.

b. SHIRLEY BLACKBURN, second child of Ed and Helen Blackburn, was born February 19, 1932. She married WILLIAM CARROLL. They live in Kemp, Texas.   To this union SUSAN CARROL was born.

1). SUSAN CARROLL, child of William and Shirley Carroll, married JOE DORRIS. To this union JOSEPH WILLIAM, WESLEY and DAVID LEE DORRIS were born.

2) MARLIN BLACKBURN, second child of Jesse and Mollie Blackburn, was born in 1907. He married JIMMIE CALLIE SHOEMAKER. Jimmie was born in 1912. Marlin Blackburn died in 1968. Jimmie died in 1990. Both are buried in Newman Cemetery, Lufkin, Texas. To this union Marie, Marshall, Ray, Tim, Charles, Danny and Ronnie Blackburn were born.

3) VESTER BLACKBURN, third child of Jesse and Mollie Blackburn, was born November 29, 1908. He married ANNIE RUTH LOCKHART. Lester died July 13, 1987 and is buried in Newman Cemetery, Lufkin, Texas. To this union BOBBY BLACKBURN born September 16, 1934, JANICE BLACKBURN, born April 17, 1942 and MELBA ANNICE BLACKBURN,    born February 15, 1937.

c. MELBA ANNICE BLACKBURN, third child of Vester and Annie Blackburn, was born February 15, 1937. She died on February 22, 1937 and is buried in Newman Cemetery, Lufkin, Texas.

ALWILDA MAY "BILL" BLACKBURN

d. ALWILDA MAY "BILL" BLACKBURN, fourth child of Jack and Maggie Blackburn, was born in 1886. She married CHARLIE HINES who was born in 1885. Charles died in 1941 and Bill died in 1968. Both are buried in the Newman Cemetery, Lufkin, Texas.

1)  MARVIN HINES, first child of Charlie and Bill Hines, was born June 19, 1907. He married MYRTIE DEATON. She was born November 18, 1911, Marvin died December 1984 and is buried in Garden of Memories, Lufkin, Texas.

a). PATRICIA HINES, first child of Marvin and Myrtie Hines, was born March 1, 1934. She married JOHN WHITE. To this union LYNN, JOHN MARVIN and SUZANNE WHITE were born January 30, 1954, March 20, 1958 and October 14, 1964. John Marvin White died on July 16, 1990 and is buried in Ryans Chapel, Diboll, Texas.

b). TOMMY HINES, second child Marvin and Myrtie Hines, was born May 22, 1936. He married PATSY JUMPER. To this union JENNY, CHARLES, AMY and JAY HINES were born.

c). SANDRA HINES, third child of Marvin and Myrtie Hines, was born March 19, 1940. She married ERNEST HOUGH in February 1959. Earnest was born February 24, 1934.

1). TAMMY HOUGH, first child of Ernest and Sandra Hough, was born June 9, 1960. She married GARY GREENING. To this union TYLER and CHASE GREENING were born October 17, 1986 and February 17, 1991.

2). MARK HOUGH, second child of Ernest and Sandra Hough, was born July 14, 1965. He married RHONDA MOSLEY. To this union DAGAN and LANDAN HOUGH were born May 14, 1991 and June 30, 1994.

3). CHRISTI HOUGH, third child of Ernest and Sandra Hough, was born April 11, 1969. She married BLAKE PARKER.

d) DAVID HINES, fourth child of Marvin and Myrtie Hines, was born March 24, 1944. He married PHYLIS WESTBROOK. To this union TINA and BECKY HINES were born March 10, 1967 and March 12, 1970. David Hines died September 9, 1986.

2) CHARLES GRAVIS HINES, second child of Charlie and Bill Hines, was born April 8, 1917. He married DOTA BEA GOODWIN. Dota was born August 31, 1937. Charles died December 31, 1987. Dota died September 3, 1991. They are both buried in Newman Cemetery, Lufkin, Texas. To this union LINDA MARTIN TIMOTHY HINES were born. Timothy died and is buried in Newman Cemetery, Lufkin, Texas.

3) CALLIE HINES, third child of Charlie and Bill Hines, was born October 10, 1921. He married first, CORA FAYE YOUNG. To this union BOBBY, MICHAEL AND TERRY HINES were born. Callie later married LOUISE BARNETT. To this union no children were born.

4). THARON HINES, fourth child of Charlie and Bill Hines, married FRANK KIRKLAND.

a). JUANICE KIRKLAND, first child of Frank and Tharon Hines, married ERNEST WILSON and to this union KERRIE, DIANE and CHRISTINA WILSON were born.

b). ELVIS KIRKLAND, second child of Frank and Tharon Hines, married RUBY (last name unknown) and to this union TODD KIRKLAND was born.

c). STEVEN KIRKLAND, third child of Frank and Tharon Hines, married LOU (last name unknown) and CLINTON and DARREN KIRKLAND were born.

CHARLES WILLIAM "CHARLEY" BLACKBURN

e. CHARLES WILLIAM "CHARLEY" BLACKBURN, fifth child and twin of Jack and Maggie Blackburn, was born in 1889. He married MARY SAVANNAH ROBERTSON on September 18, 1922. Mary was born in 1900. Mary lives with her daughter PEGGY GIPSON at Blackburn Switch, off Highway 103, Lufkin, Texas (1997). She continues to enjoy a good game of forty-two and will welcome anyone to play at their own risk. Charley died in 1954 and is buried in the Newman Cemetery, Lufkin, Texas.

1). VICTORIA BLACKBURN, first child of Charley and Mary Blackburn, was born in 1933. She married RALPH DAVIDSON. She is a Methodist Minister in the Dallas, Texas area.

a). Valarie Davidson, first child of Ralph and Victoria Davidson, was born in 1962. She married RICHARD  "RICK" ENGLERT. To this union EVA ENGLERT was born.

2). PEGGY BLACKBURN, second child of Charley and Mary Blackburn was born in 1935. She married J. D. GIPSON on November 9, 1963. J. D. died January 10, 1964 and is buried in Newman Cemetery, Lufkin, Texas. To this union no children are born. Peggy presently is a contributing writer for The Lufkin Daily News. She has written many articles based on the Newman family and its history. The articles are written under the headline"Slice of Life'.

ELI PINCKNEY BLACKBURN

f. ELI PINCKNEY BLACKBURN, sixth and twin of Jack and Maggie Blackburn was born in 1889. He died at birth. No marker of the burial is found in the Newman Cemetery, but it is believed that this is his burial place and the marker is lost with the passage of time.

JOHN HUEY BLACKBURN

g. JOHN HUEY BLACKBURN, seventh child of Jack and Maggie Blackburn, was born March 11, 1892. He married DILLIE GOODWIN. She was born March 12, 1884. He died April 13, 1942. She died September 27, 1980. Both are buried in Newman Cemetery, Lufkin, Texas.

1) AVIS MURIAL BLACKBURN, first child of John and Dillie Blackburn, was born February 10, 1917. She married CLYDE JORDAN on September 6, 1928. Clyde was born May 8, 1912 and died June 27, 1977. He is buried in Newman Cemetery, Lufkin, Texas. Murial lives at Blackburn Switch in Lufkin, Texas.
