Long - Mrs. Jackie M. Roberts, 64, of Route 2, Flintstone, Ga., diedSunday morning in a local hospital. She was a lifelong resident ofChattanooga Valley and was a member of Chattanooga Valley Baptist Church.She was retired from Chattem Drug and Chemical Co. after 20 years ofservice.

Survivors include her husband , Morgan W. Long; daughter, DeborahNichois, both of Flintstone; son, Billy M. Long, Dayton, Tenn; twosisters, Midred Clayton, Flintstone, and Irene Sloan, Tiftonia; twograndchildren, Shane and Tammy Nichois, both of Flintstone. James lived at the old home located nine miles north of Forsythe, Georgiaand five miles south of Indian Springs on the Cabiness and Indian SpringsRoad, where his father and mother lived and died. Here he was reared tomanhood and on 3 October 1861, at the age of 18, he enlisted in the CivilWar at Jackson, Georgia. He was in several active engagements with theenemy. He was with Hood's Division and was with them when they went towinter quarters on the coast of Savannah, Georgia. Here he contractedTyphoid fever and was sent to a hospital in Forsythe, Georgia. Afterrecovering he went back into service and was wounded in the battle ofAtlanta on the 22nd day of July 1864 (his tombstone reads 1865.) He saidduring the battle, just before he was wounded, Van Mckibbin, who wascaptain at that time, laid his hand upon his shoulder and said, 'Jim,here don't you see the yankees are surrounding us and unfolding ourlines, the left wing of our army is falling back. Shoot that officeryonder on that white horse.' So James fired at the officer, then droppeddown upon his knee to reload, bit off the end of his cartridge, placed itto the muzzle of the gun and forthwith pressed it down the guns barrel.By the time it was about half way down, he was struck by a minnie ballnear the neck, on top of the shoulder and passing out from under theshoulder blade. By the time he had recovered from the wound the war wasover and he returned to his old home near Forsythe. Here he foundcomplete desolation. Sherman's army had been through and raidedeverything in that section. Food was scare. In 1865 corn was shippedfrom the north down there to plant. It not being climatized, the corncrop was almost a failure and from that time on the corn was known as the'Lincoln Corn.' Later that year he married Martha Elizabeth Castleberry,who lived three miles south of Indian Springs, Georgia on the highwayleading toward Cabiness. They lived at the place known as the oldTolbert place about six years (just south of the Castleberry home, kindaoff from the road on the east side. While living here they had threechildren born to them. In December 1871 they decided to move to Alabamawhere his father's brother, Jesse H. Roberts lived near Spring Hill,south of Troy. So, they had a sale of their belongings preparatory tothe move. After these preliminary adjustments they made their start forAlabama. They had a stallion, a mare, a buggy and a bull. James, thefather, rode saddle back on the stallion, Martha, the mother, and thethree children drove the mare and the buggy and the bull followingalong. In this way they made their way to Troy and on to Spring Hill,Alabama, stopping with Jesse H. Roberts, his uncle. It was not longbefore he and Martha arranged for a home known at that time as the 'CrowPlace.' Here they lived during the year 1872. Early in the year, Mamiethe youngest child contracted Diphtheria and died. She was buried inSpring Hill Cemetery. In the latter part of 1873, James and Marthabought the 'Willis Place,' located one and one-half miles above SpringHill on Hobleys Bridge Road, east of Spring Hill-Troy highway. Whileliving at this home there were two children born to them, Jeptha Augustusand Victoria Ann. In June 1885 James Monroe Roberts rode horse back on amare he owned at that time down into Coffee County, Alabama, about tenmiles south of Elba, which was the county seat and selected a homesteadwhich at that time the government was offering to people who wanted homescontaining one hundred sixty acres. After making six selections andgetting up the numbers of the land, he returned home to rest for a fewdays and then he started out for Montgomery on the same little mare(Molly was her name) arriving at Montgomery sixty miles away. He went tothe land office and homestead the place which he had previouslyselected. Returning home form his long journey, he and his oldest sonJames Warren (Bud) went down on the homestead, built a pole crib, dug awell and deadened some timber preparatory for a farm. They went backhome. The crop was gathered and things made ready to move. The latterpart of November he went back to the homestead and erected a split loghouse, as lumber was very scarce at that time. He returned home and thelatter part of December moved by wagons and teams down to the home,carrying a man named Simmons along with them to build the chimney to thedwelling. He left his corn and other food stuff in care of Parson JakeMacon, who bought his 80 Acres of Pike County land for five hundreddollars. As there was very little farming done in Coffee County at thattime, he would go back after a load of corn and other foodstuffs aboutonce a month (a 40 mile trip.) In 1892 James Monroe Roberts was electedCommissioner for the southeast district of Coffee County. After servingthree years of his four year term he went blind until his death.²

     James Rowland Roberts was born on 22 November 1898 at Blythe, Richmond County, Georgia.^1,2 He was the son of Green Walshington Roberts Jr. and Cora Rowland.¹ James Rowland Roberts died on 7 August 1968 at Blythe, Richmond County, Georgia, at age 69.^1,2 He was buried after 7 August 1968 at Blythe Methodist Cemetery, Blythe, Richmond County, Georgia.^1,2
     According to Ramona Crites, he got his nickname when he was out coon hunting with his brothers. He got so drunk that they tied him to a tree so that he wouldn't get in the way or get hurt. Coon Roberts was missing an eye and had a glass eye. He lost the eye as a child when one of his brothers (Moody Roberts) was hitting an anvil with a hammer. A piece of metal flew up and put out his eye. During World War II the dUnited States Army accepted him as an infantryman glass eye not withstanding.² His nickname was "Coon."¹

     James Rudolph Roberts was the son of James Levi Roberts and Badie Georgianne Chance.¹

     James Teague Roberts was born on 28 April 1899.¹ He was the son of William Burch Roberts and Annie Jennie Chambers.¹ James Teague Roberts married Reba Hutto.¹ James Teague Roberts died on 14 June 1979 at Shorterville, Henry County, Alabama, at age 80.¹

Even though Nana and he divorced when my mom was only 7 years old, ittook a long while for him to find his way. He had many jobs and woremany hats. But I think his greatest gift was to be the best granddaddythere ever was. Later in life, he owned quite a few donut shops. Ithink he made the best donuts there ever were. He opened up shops insmall towns where not many people put business' in. He provided jobs andbrought people together. He got those shops up and going and then taughtpeople the bakery business, then he sold the shop and moved on to thenext town and opened the next shop.

He adored his grandchildren. Everytime he'd show up to our house, henever came empty handed. He always brought gifts, candy, sweets anddonuts! I think he had the most grateful grandkids ever!¹

     Jeanett Roberts was the daughter of Boyd Roberts and Eilene Dismuke.¹
