John Wallace and Joseph Tolls as a minuteman. He later served under Capt. John Wilds and was in a number of skirmishes against the Tories. He also served under a Col. Hayes and assisted in burying Hayes. He also served at one point under Gen. Greene. During 1779 he was assigned the duty of thrashing, cleaning, and delivering grain to the Army.1

He later moved to Georgia.

Samuel Wharton was born on 13 September 1740 at Granville County, North Carolina.1 He was the son of William Wharton and Jane Roberts.1 Samuel Wharton married Maudaline Sullivan on 6 October 1771 at Charleston, South Carolina.1 Samuel Wharton died on 4 June 1824 at Cane Creek, Laurens County, South Carolina, at age 83.1 He was buried after 4 January 1824 at Burch-Wharton Cemetery, Watarloo, South Carolina, He and Maudeline have a simple tomb rock.1
Samuel Wharton served in theRevolutionary War between 1776 and 1780 He was a soldier in the American Revolution, serving as a Lieutenant and a Captain. See the publication of the "The Historical Commission: - A. S. Sallly, editor, book U W no. 28, Columbia, SC which reads "Issued July 7th. 1785 to Samuel Wharton for eight three pounds, six and ten pence, for military services as Lieutenant and Captain as per account audited. Principal L -83-6-10". Samuel was also a Colonel of Militia in South Carolina. He was afterwards always addressed as Col. Wharton.1 Samuel bought 150 acres of land for 250 pounds sometime around April 9, 1777 on Cane Creek in Craven County, South Carolina. ( Laurens County Deed Book A)

William Wharton appeared to live on the western border of Granville Co.in the mid to late 1700's. At the time, Orange county had just beenformed (1752) from part of Granville Co. Several districts on the westernedge of Granville and northeastern edge of Orange County are variouslylisted in either county. The area around Deep Creek, where William ownedland at one time, is presently in Person Co. (formed in 1791), and verynear Cub creek where Richard Roberts lived. Richard was the father ofJane Roberts, William's wife.
The earliest record of William in Granville Co. is a listing in 1756 inthe Granville Co. deed books. Apparently he worked frequently as a swornchain carrier with the surveyor, William Churton. William's signatureappears on many deeds along with that of other sworn chain carriers andthe surveroy in charge.
