Theodore William 'Ted' Roberts, Jr., 62, of 630 Bruce St., Lebanon, diedat 11:09 a.m. June 7 at Spring View Hospital.

Mr. Roberts was a past master of Lebanon Masonic Lodge #87, a member ofthe Lebanon Baptist Church and owner of Roberts' Chevron ServiceStation. His parents were the late Theodore W. Roberts and Dona SadlerRoberts.

Survivors include: his wife, Lucy Crowdus Roberts; one stepson, CharlesPearl of Liberty; one stepdaughter, Mrs. Beverly Jean Harmon of BowlingGreen; one sister, Mrs. Thera Marble of Mount Vernon; four stepgrandchildren.

Funeral services were conducted at 2:30 p.m. June 9 at Lebanon BaptistChurch with burial in Ryder Cemetery. Reverend Gary Stringer officiated.

Formally, a department store manager for Roses, Kresge, Newberry, inEdenton, North Carolina went into business with D. B. Lilies (a formerjewelry merchant). In Columbia, Adair County, Kentucky, Theodore wentinto business for himself (Roberts 5-10-25¢ Store). This store wasdestroyed by fire on Christmas Eve 1944. The article 'Flames SweptBusiness Block' appears in the Adair County Newspaper on 3 January 1945.
A Mason, Theodore was a faithful Methodist for years in Edenton,Madison, and Carthage, North Carolina; and later in Columbia and Lebanon,Kentucky. His daughter, Thera Mae Roberts remembers especially hisplaying Santa Claus for the Edenton Methodist Episcopal Church in the1930s. Although, he was often transferred, he managed to secure workduring the depression and gave his family a fairly decent way of life.
In October 1964, Grandpa Theodore Roberts came to visit his daughterThera and his grandsons: DeCody Brad, Kenton Randall, and Duane BrettMarble in Ashland, Ohio. He had just visited his son Theodore 'Ted'William Jr. in Lebanon, Kentucky. During his week visit, Grandpa Robertstook his grandsons for a ride in his Volkswagen and bought pastries atthe bakery. After his departure for Illinois, Thera and the grandsonsdiscussed how much time it took Grandpa to climb up the staircase and thesmell of muscle ointment from his person. The following month, GrandpaTheodore Roberts died of lung cancer. He had known of his seriousailment and had visited his loved ones for the last time.

Every other year, since the death of her spouse (Duane Bradshaw Marble)in 1958, other tragedies would touch the life of Thera Mae Roberts. Deathwould take the lives of those who have young wedded couple of 1950, somuch. Kenton Maurice, (Duane's stepfather) passed away January 1960,Donna Mae Sadler, (Thera's mother) passed away June 1962 and TheodoreRoberts, (Thera's father) passed away November 1964. Then in the Winterof 1966, (as though death was not satisfied), Thera Mae drove off highway60, three miles south of Haysville, totally wrecking her blue ChevroletCheville. She walked from the wreckage to a farmhouse light and later thehighway patrol brought her home at 11:30 P.M. (the boys were standing atthe door step, wondering 'Now what?'). Thera received a head concussionand would suffer from migraine headaches the rest of her life. In spiteof life's cruel hand, Thera Mae solitarily provided a rich up bringingfor her three boys, through her determination and love. Her strong willand hard work made her an excellent High School English Teacher. No doubta good role model for her students, as well as for her sons. God knew thevoid of love created by a man's (father's) death could be filled by thelove of a woman (mother) such as Thera Mae.¹

John died before 1924. Herhusband Josua was a traveling salesman and had another wife or girlfriendin some other city. They were divorced on February 2, 1925. The casewas held before a jury in Jasper County Superior Court. The jury foundthat both parties were free to marry again and eleven year old Arthur wasawarded to Mrs. Speir (Jasper County, Georgia Superior Court Minutes Book2/1923 - 11/1927 p154, 201, 202, 275, 276). She suffered greatly fromthe experience and never remarried. She later moved to Atlanta and workedas a nurses aid helping older people who wanted to stay home. Sometimeslater she returned to Monticello and lived close to the town square. Sheis buried in West View Cemetery in Monticello.¹ She died on 16 December 1968 at Monticello, Jasper County, Georgia, at age 76.¹

     Wiley Jones Roberts was born on 27 February 1812 at Caswell County, North Carolina.^2,3 He was the son of John Arthur Roberts and Nancy Hargis.² Wiley Jones Roberts married Mary Ann Spires, daughter of Hezekiah Spires Jr. and Margaret McCorkle, on 8 May 1840 at Lincoln County, Georgia, Spelling of her name on her marriage licence is Squires? but the spellingof her name on estate records of her father is Spires. Her motherMargaret married Jesse H. Roberts (husbands brother) after Mary Ann'sfather died. Samual McCorkle was appointed Mary Ann's guardian (MinuteBook V 3/3/1823 in Lincoln County, Georgia court house) after her fatherdied. Jesse H. Roberts became her guardian sometimes before 1838 (AnnualReturn Book #4 1838-1847 page 193+260 1/23/1841 and 4/18/1842 in LincolnCounty, Georgia court house) because Samuel McCorkle was insolvent. Arecord dated February 1838 in Court of Ordinary Annual Returns Book C1831-1856 Monroe County, confirms Jesse as her guardian. On her gravemaker it states 'She has gone to her home in Heaven, and all herafflictions are over.¹ Wiley Jones Roberts died on 7 June 1893 at Blount, Monroe County, Georgia., at age 81.¹ He was buried after 7 June 1893 at Blount, Monroe County, Georgia..¹
     The census seems to indicate that Wiley and Mary Ann lived with his brother Jesse H. after the death of both of their fathers and in all likelihood Jesse married the mother of Mary Ann. They moved from Lincoln County, GA to Monroe County, GA sometimes between 1825 and 1830. Both the 1830 and the 1840 censuses listed Jesse H. Roberts with children or young adults the ages of Wiley and Marry Ann
On 12/31/1829 Wiley Roberts purchased about 100 acres (lot #148) in Monroe County for $475.00. On 8/1/1889 he and his wife sold all or part of the land. In the 1860, 1870, and 1880 censuses for Monroe County he is listed as a farmer living with his wife and children (6 in 1860, 5 in 1870 and 1 in 1880). The value of his real estate in 1860 was $1000 and in 1870 was $500, which probably reflects the devaluation after the Civil War. His personal estate is valued at $450 in both 1860 and 1870. The 1880 census has no figures for either category. The 1850 census liste him and his wife and three children and spells the last name as Roberds. His oldest son is listed in the 1870 census but not the 1880. He is listed in the 1853 Monroe County Tax Digest owning 103 acres of land with a whole value of $1215.³

     Wiley Verner Roberts was born on 25 November 1875 at Monroe County, Georgia.¹ He was the son of John Arthur Roberts II and Martha 'Mattie' Malinda Simmons.¹ Wiley Verner Roberts married Lula Kennon on 26 March 1899 at Jasper County, Georgia.¹ Wiley Verner Roberts died on 21 June 1967 at Augusta, Georgia, at age 91.¹
     

He was named for his grandfather (Wiley Roberts) but have no idea wherehis middle name, by which he was called, came from. Listed in JasperCounty, Georgia 1900 census. Lived in Monticello, Georgia close to hisbrother Z. T. and owned and ran a service station. He is not listed inthe 1910 Georgia census but is in the 1920 Jasper County, Georgia censusliving with his wife and two children. He is listed as owning anautomobile business. The business was Cornwell, Roberts, OxfordCompany. On December 6, 1924 he opened the first of its kind fillingstation close to the town square (Monticello News 12/3/1924). InNovember 1934 he ran for Monticello City Council and finished seventh outof eight men running for the five man council (Monticello News11/29/1934). On July 18, 1936 he opened a new station called RobertsFilling Station on Greene Street and in November 1936 he sold the stationto a Eugene Allen (Monticello New 7/16 and 11/5/1936 In January 1937 heand his wife moved to Augusta, Georgia, where he also purchased and ran aservice station. He is buried at Hillcrest Memorial Park in Augusta.¹

     William Roberts was born in 1843 at Benton County, Alabama.¹ He was the son of John Roberts and Mary Delk.¹

     William 'Bill' Lawrence Roberts was born on 30 May 1892 at Alabama.¹ He was the son of Nathan Johnson Roberts and Nancy Lear Landers.¹ William 'Bill' Lawrence Roberts married Tennie Alma Taylor on 5 October 1913 at Tuscola, Taylor County, Texas.¹ William 'Bill' Lawrence Roberts died on 15 July 1977 at age 85.¹
