     James Thomas Roberts was born on 16 September 1889 at Coffee County, Alabama.¹ He was the son of James Warren Roberts and Sarah Francis 'Salley' Donaldson.¹ James Thomas Roberts married Nancy Jane Edge on 27 June 1908.¹ James Thomas Roberts died on 20 April 1965 at Enterprise, Alabama, at age 75.¹ He was buried at Damascus Baptist Church Cemetery.¹

Even though Nana and he divorced when my mom was only 7 years old, ittook a long while for him to find his way. He had many jobs and woremany hats. But I think his greatest gift was to be the best granddaddythere ever was. Later in life, he owned quite a few donut shops. Ithink he made the best donuts there ever were. He opened up shops insmall towns where not many people put business' in. He provided jobs andbrought people together. He got those shops up and going and then taughtpeople the bakery business, then he sold the shop and moved on to thenext town and opened the next shop.

He adored his grandchildren. Everytime he'd show up to our house, henever came empty handed. He always brought gifts, candy, sweets anddonuts! I think he had the most grateful grandkids ever!¹

     Jeanett Roberts was the daughter of Boyd Roberts and Eilene Dismuke.¹

     Jeptha Augustus Roberts was born in April 1875 at Spring Hill, Coffee County, Alabama.¹ He was the son of James Monroe Roberts and Martha Elizabeth Castleberry.¹ Jeptha Augustus Roberts married Manda Floyd circa 1899.¹ Jeptha Augustus Roberts married Lena Belle Gay circa 1904.¹ Jeptha Augustus Roberts was buried at Damascus Baptist Church Cemetery.¹
     

He married his first wife, whose first name was Manda (it is believed herlast name was Floyd, but this has not been verified at this time)sometimes between 1897 and 1899. On 26 May 1900 a son was born and namedJeptha Augustus, Jr. Within a year or two after the birth of their son,Jeptha and Manda were divorced and their son stayed with his mother.Jeptha Augustus Roberts, Sr. married his second wife, Lena Belle Gayabout 1904. Jeptha was a farmer and their farm was located in CoffeeCounty, Alabama between Chancellor and Elba, Alabama. This marriageproduced five sons and three daughters. The date of Jeptha and LenaBelle death is not known at this time. They are both buried in unmarkedgraves in the Damascus Baptist Church cemetery.¹

     Jeremiah L. Roberts was born circa 1773 at Caswell County, North Carolina.¹ He was the son of David Montgomery Roberts and Caroline Mills.¹ Jeremiah L. Roberts married Anna Alexander circa 1795 at Georgia.¹

     Jesse Roberts was born in 1844 at Georgia.^1,2 He was the son of Green Washington Roberts Sr and Mary Ann Ramsey.¹

     Jesse Roberts was born circa 1734 at North Carolina.¹ He was the son of Richard Roberts and Elizabeth Lynden Montgomery.¹ Jesse Roberts died circa 1777 at Granville County, North Carolina.¹
     His will is on file in the Granville County Courthouse.¹

     Jesse Elmo Roberts was born on 5 November 1891.¹ He was the son of James Warren Roberts and Sarah Francis 'Salley' Donaldson.¹ Jesse Elmo Roberts married Liddie Scarbborough.¹ Jesse Elmo Roberts died on 22 October 1911 at age 19.¹ He was buried at Damascus Baptist Church Cemetery.¹

     Jesse Hancock Roberts was born in 1799 at Person County, North Carolina.^4,3,1 He was the son of John Arthur Roberts and Nancy Hargis.^2,3 Jesse Hancock Roberts married Margaret McCorkle, daughter of (?) McCorkle, on 2 November 1825 at Lincoln County, Georgia..⁵ Jesse Hancock Roberts married Mary W. Whaley on 16 April 1871 at Pike County, Alabama.^6,7 Jesse Hancock Roberts died on 7 June 1884 at Milo, Pike County, Alabama, The obituary in the Troy Enquirer of June 21. 1884 gives the date of his death as June 7, 1884. The record of deaths in Pike County from 1881 to 1892 published by the DAR gives it as June 8, 1884. The cause of death was the result of paralysis caused by a fall. The attending physician was C. M. Carlisle, M.D.^4,2 He was buried after 7 June 1884 at Center Ridge Church Cemetery, east of Hwy. 87, South of Troy, AL near the Coffee County line, Pike County, Alabama.⁷
     Jesse Hancock Roberts and Margaret McCorkle immigrated in 1827 to Monroe County, Georgia, from Lincoln County.⁸ This story comes from a letter written by James Monroe Roberts, as shared by James L. Roberts: The first husband of Jesse's wife (William Spires) drew a land pansion. The land was located in Lee County, GA. In 1928 Jesse made a trip there of look after the land on behalf of his wife. The County seat of the county of Lee was Oglethorp. The land was about 12 or 14 miles south of Oglethorp. After locating and looking over the land, Jesse began the journey back to his home in Monroe County. He had not gone far when he met an Indian on the trail. He told the Indian about seeing some turkeys across the road a few hundred yards back. The Indian reluctantly and likely some what doubtfully, passed on. Jesse had not gone far on his pony before a gun fired from behind, sending a bullet smashing through his body and the right arem which he was holding the bridle. The bullet lodged in his sleve. James Monroe states in the letter that he had seen the scar of the wound. Jesse did not fall from his horse and managed to escape. He soon cam to a small stream of water where he managed to get some water to drink. After drinking the water he felt better and resumed his journey. A short time later he me up with Nathan Powell who was sheriff of Lee County at that time and after whom Jesse's son, Nathan Powell Roberts, would be named. The letter does not state whether the Indian was captured or not.⁸ Jesse Hancock Roberts is head of household in the Us 1840 of Monroe County, Georgia. Enumerated with Jesse Hancock Roberts was.⁹ He resided at Milo, Pike County, Alabama, in 1860 According to the 1860 Census of Milo, Pike County, Alabama (Eastern Division) page 102, line 18, J. H. lived next door to W.L.D. Crow and Nancy Roberts. According to the Troy Enquirer of June 21, 1884 of five sons four of them died during the civil war fighting for the confederacy. This would make five counting his son-in-law, W.L.D. Crow. Accoring to a record of deaths in Pike County from 1881 to 1892 (as published by the Pike County Historical Society) Jesse Roberts died on June 8th instead of June 7...he was born in Georgia, was age 86, was a farmer....died of paralysis from a fall...died and buried at Spring Hill cemetery. The above information was furnished by John P. Johnston of Troy, Alabama, whose uncle, Andrew Bryan, married Mildred Elizabeth Roberts, born in 1840 and died in Geneva County, AL, in 1927. Also according to the same above information, the year of Jesse's birth was 1798. I believe the information that he was born in GA is incorrect as, Martin de Vore, a ggg-grandson, confirms my own supposition that he was born in NC.¹ According to the 1870 census Jesse H. Roberts and Margaret were living in Milo, Pike County, AL; In the 1870 Census for Pike County, Alabama Jesse H. Roberts lived with his wife Margaret in house number 18 in the community of Milo, AL. He was a Farmer with $1,000 in asseset and a real estate valued at $500.00. He is listed as having been born in the state of North Carolina. He was 71 years of age at the time of the census. Margaret was 70 years of age at the time of the census and is listed as having been born in the state of Georgia.¹ Jesse was living in Lincoln County, Graves Military District when he won a land lottery in 1821 in Monroe County, GA (193/15) the reference being the same as Arthur Roberts. He mosved to Monroe County before 1830 and to AL after 1850. He is listed in the 1830, 1840, and 1850 Monroe County censuses living with his wife and children and in the Monroe County Tax Digest in 1853 where he owned over 400 acres of land, four slaves and had a whole property worth of $5,985. He and his wife Margaret are listed in the 1860 and 1870 Pike County, AL censuses. In 1860 he was a farmer who could not read with a real estate valued at $1440 dollare and a personal valuation of $1000. He also owned seven slaves living in one slave house. In 1870 his real estate was valued at $7800 and his personal valuation was $500. He is listed in the 1880 census living with his second wife Mary W. He died without a will but there are numerous probate records in box 51 at the Pike County court house listing his children and assets of $1000.⁶

     Jesse M. Roberts was born in 1805 at Georgia.¹ He was the son of Joseph Roberts and Winifred Eppinger.¹ Jesse M. Roberts married Louisa McCrary on 17 December 1829 at Henry County, Georgia.¹ Jesse M. Roberts died on 18 April 1874.¹

     Jessi Roberts was born in May 1899 at Alabama.¹ He was the son of Henry A. Roberts and Martha Catherine Bankson.¹

     Jessie Roberts was born circa 1775 at Caswell County, North Carolina.¹ He was the son of David Montgomery Roberts and Caroline Mills.¹ Jessie Roberts married Moses Brasher circa 1795 at Georgia.¹

     Jesssie R. Roberts was born in 1860.¹ He was the son of George M. T. Roberts and Sarah A. Ayers.¹ Jesssie R. Roberts married Amanda Holley on 23 November 1893 at Henry County, Alabama.¹

     Jewel Spivey Roberts was born circa 1917.¹ He was the son of Eli Earnest Roberts and Bettie Lou Ellis.¹

     Jewell Onita Roberts was born circa 1903.¹ She was the daughter of Albert Francis Roberts and Mary Sular Roberts.¹

     Joel Abbott Roberts was born in 1813 at Georgia.¹ He was the son of Dr. Willis Roberts and Ascenith Alexander.¹ Joel Abbott Roberts married Mary Talor Bolles on 17 February 1840 at Georgia.¹ Joel Abbott Roberts died on 7 August 1863 at Augusta, Richmond County, Georgia.¹
          Joel Abbott Roberts was a banker with the firm Lewis and Porteous and owned the country home, "the Roberts-Staples House," at 1614 Old Shell Road, at the northern end of North Lafayette Street. This house, built by 1852, became known as "the Staples Place" in later years.
     Dr. Roberts left the adjoining property to his son Joel when he died in 1853, so Elizabeth Bolles deeded 910 Government Street to her daughter in 1855. Joel buitt their townhouse there in 1855. He also built large, nearly identical townhouses at 908 in 1857, and 906 in 1859, which he promptly sold to his sister, Laura Pillians. One source says the builder was Isaiah Rodgers, while another says Thomas S. James. Both skilled craftsmen and slave labor were used. The townhouses at 906 and 908 were 120 years old when they were demolished in 1979 by commercial developers for a fast food place. Townhouse 910 is still standing. It is 7,500 square feet in size and is called the Roberts-Taylor-Isbell House, and is a National Historic Landmark and the oldest mansion left on Mobile's famed Government Street. After Joel's death in 1863 Mary subdivided their property, selling the northern half of 910 Government Street to Caroline Casper, whose daughter Bertha Frazier sold it and the house on it (909 Conti) to R. V. Taylor in 1904. The Taylors sold the lot in 1939.¹

Enumerated with John Arthur Roberts was.⁷ He left a will on 1 October 1822 at Lincoln Parish, Georgia, The abstract reads: ! Oct 1822. I, Arthur Roberts, being sick in body, but of a sound mind and memory. I will that my just debts be paid. I give unto my beloved wife, Nancy Roberts, all my estate both real and personal during her natural life or widowhood, then to be equally divided among my survivors as they come of age. I appoint my wife Nancy Roberts and Thomas Farrow as executors. Proved on oath of John McCord and Elijah Echols this 19 Dec. 1822. Recorded this 17 Dec 1822.⁸ John Roberts is listed in the 1784-87 Caswell County, Caswell District, NC census with 3 males 21-60+, and four females. Arthur Roberts is listed in the 1790 Hillsborough District, Caswell County, St. James District, NC with males ages 2 0-10, 1 11-16, 1 27-45 and females ages 2 0-10 , 2 11-16, 2 17-26 and 1 27-45. He is also listed in the 1810 Person County, NC census. The family had one loam and 200 quantity (yards) of cloth. The 150 acres of land sold to him by father David in 1803 was sold along with 46 additional acres for $300.00 in 1816 (Book E p163). He and his family and Father David, Cousin David (Shadrach's son) and/or brother David, brother Bartholomew, uncles Joseph and Shadrack and other first cousins moved to Lincoln or Columbia County GA between 1800 and 1818. Arthur is listed in Captain Graves district Lincoln County, GA in 1818 (spelled Arthur Bobert). Both he and a David roberts are listed in the 1820 Lincoln County and Columbia County, GA census respectively (very difficult to read). Arthur and David but not the wives ages are stated to be between 26-45 rather than over 45. Fourteen people are living in Arthur's house while only four are living in David's. Both families are farmers with one person in Arthur's household working in manufacturing. Arthur Roberts of Lincoln County, Graves Military District, won a land lottery in Irwin County (#157/9) in 1820 and two land lotteries in 1821 in Henry County (#36/13 and 196/5) [The Third and Fourth 1820 and 1821 Land Lotteries of GA, 1973 Southern Historical Pres, Inc 1973]. Arthur's will and list of property are on file at the Lincoln County, GA courthouse Books C+D, V p72+83 abd 1 o166-7. There are references to him as both John Arthur and just plain Arthur. He must have gone by Arthur most of the time. Family records compiled by Mrs. Maude Roberts Martin in her letters agree with his ancestors listed here, but a book by Merritt Roberts ("Roberts Family" 1985 NCC C929.2R643r) indicates David's father is a Henry Roberts, grandfather John Roberts and ggramdfather a Andrew Roberts.
