     According to Ramona Crites, he got his nickname when he was out coon hunting with his brothers. He got so drunk that they tied him to a tree so that he wouldn't get in the way or get hurt. Coon Roberts was missing an eye and had a glass eye. He lost the eye as a child when one of his brothers (Moody Roberts) was hitting an anvil with a hammer. A piece of metal flew up and put out his eye. During World War II the dUnited States Army accepted him as an infantryman glass eye not withstanding.²
