David Montgomery Roberts was born in October 1745 at Charlotte County or Orange County, Virginia or North Carolina, H was born near the border of Virginia and North Carolina. It is not certain which side he was born on.1,4,2 He was the son of Richard Roberts and Elizabeth Lynden Montgomery.1,2,3 David Montgomery Roberts married Caroline Mills in 1766 at Caswell County, North Carolina.1,5,2 David Montgomery Roberts married Ann Moore after 1776 at North Carolina.6,3 David Montgomery Roberts died on 23 February 1840 at Shelby County, Alabama, at age 94.7
David Montgomery Roberts served in theRevolutionary War between 1776 and 1780.8 NOTES FROM CARLOS ELMO ROBERTS AS TOLD TO HIM BY HIS FATHER. tHIS WRITTEN DOCUMENT HAS BEEN HANDED DOWN THROUGH HIS FAMILY: first we find David Roberts of Person County, North Carolina. While he resides at this place he became a soldier in the Revolutionary War. In the year 1814 he, his four sons and daughters moved to Lincoln County, Georgia (near Old Salem Church.) He moved from Lincoln County, Georgia to what is now known as Lowndes County, Alabama in the year about 1820, settling near the Alabama River, about half way between Catawba and the city of Montgomery. His four sons were Jerry, Jesse, George, and Arthur. I have no information as to the number and names of David Roberts' daughters. These children were reared in Lincoln County, Georgia near Old Salem Church where David first settled after moving from North Carolina to Georgia.
THE FOLLOWING INFORMATION WAS PROVIDED IN FEBRUARY 2001 BY TOM ROBERTS AS A RESULT OF HIS RESEARCH ON THE ROBERTS FAMILY: He was born either in Virginia or North Carolina. He was a Revolutionary War veteran from Charlotte County, Virginia. David Roberts was not in the Granville or Caswell County, North Carolina 1784-7 census. A David Roberts of Person County, North Carolina sold land in Lincoln County, Georgia in 1798 for 300 silver dollars. Deed on file Lincoln County, Georgia courthouse Book A page 175-6. In 1803 in Person County, North Carolina a David Roberts deeds land to a Richard and Andrew Peel (Deed Book C page 279 and 38) (son-in-laws?). A David Roberts also sold 150 acres for 120 pounds to son Arthur (Book C page 382). Witnesses to Arthur's land were three of the sons of David -- George, Jeremiah, and Willis. A David Roberts paid a poll tax of $o.3125 in Lincoln County, Georgia in 1818. I found no will of David's in North Carolina or Georgia. Another David Roberts (about 1740-1802) and his son David (about 1760) lived in Person County, during the same time frame; therefore, I question which David sold what. See notes under son John Arthur Roberts.
REVOLUTIONARY WAR SOLDIER PENSION FILE: David Roberts was born in the month of October 1745, near the boundary between Virginia and North Carolina, "Not certain which side." The names of his parents were not stated. While a resident of Caswell County, North Carolina, David Roberts volunteered sometime in April, 1776, and served two tours of three months each as a private in Captain William Rutherford's North Carolina company, and was in a few skirmishes. He volunteered the following spring and served two tours of three months each in Captain Hardin's company. He volunteered the following spring and served two tours of three months each in Captain William Nichols' company. A short while before the surrender of Cornwallis, he served as a captain of a company of volunteers for about three months. David Roberts continued to live in North Carolina for several years after the Revolution, and then moved to South Carolina, where he lived about two years, then moved to Georgia and lived eight or ten years, and thence to Alabama. The soldier, David Roberts, was allowed pension on his application executed August 21, 1832, then a resident of Shelby County, Alabama. He died February 23, 1840, leaving a child, whose name was not given.(Title: Revolutionary War Soldier Pension File of David Roberts, Record Group: Revolutionary War, Document: Certificate No. 26132, File Name: Soldier Pension File of David Roberts, File Number S 32487).9,7

Roberts married Elizabeth Page, daughter of Benjamin Page and Delila 'Dilly' Landers, on 6 February 1818 at Columbia County, Georgia.2 David P. Roberts died on 7 July 1837 at Calhoum (Benton) County, Alabama.1 He was buried after 7 July 1837 at (Walnut Springs) Friendship Baptist Church Cemetery, Jacksonville, Calhoun County, Alabama.3
David P. Roberts left a will on 24 March 1837 at Benton County, Alabama, In the name of God, Amen. I DP roberts of the County of Benton and State of Alabama considering the mortality of man and finding myself weakning but sound in mind and memory do make this my last will and testament in maner following.
In the first place I give my Soul to God who gave it and my body to the Earth to laid away as my friends may think proper in a Christian manner. As to my estate and property I possess I dispose of as follows. My will and desire is that all my just debs be paid. I lend to my beloved wife one negro woman named Charlotte, on third part of the land on which I now live, one cow and calf, one horse and saddle, one bed, one sow and pigs, which propery she is to have during her natural life and then return to my children and be equally divided among them.
My desire is that all the rest of my property remain as it now is until the youngest child becomes of the age of twenty one each child to receive equal portion of schooling and then to be equally divided among my children to wit Wm. P. Roberts, Lilleton J. Roberts, Henry S. Roberts, Sarahann P. Roberts, Luke R. Roberts, Julia C. Roberts, John L. Roberts.
Last I do appoint John Roberts and Wm. P. Roberts executors to this my last will and testament and I do hereby utterly disannull, revoke and make void all and every other will and testament legaces and bequests by me made before ratifying and confirming this and no other to be my last will and testament.
In witness whereof I have here unto set my hand and seal this 24 March 18376.
