John Martin III was born on 3 May 1789 at Jefferson County, Georgia.2,3 He was the son of John Martin Jr. and Elizabeth Allen.1,2 John Martin III married Rebecca Caldwell on 20 March 1817 at Cape Girardeau County, Missouri.1,2 John Martin III died on 27 September 1864 at "Wild Haws", Izard County, Arkansas, at the age of 75 years, 4 months, and 24 days.1,2 He was buried at Polk Bayou, Izard County, Arkansas, He was buried beside his of his wife on the old home place.2
As the eldest son much responsibility fell upon Joh during the tedious move to Missouri. As his father's possessions in Georgia were disposed of, John III had to make several trips back to the settlements. The trips were made on horseback and were full of all kinds of perils. The proceeds were mostly in silver and to secure them from any possible thieves he quilted the silver in the back of his jacket.2,4 John volunteered as a private and served for twelve months in the War of 1812. His command was assigned to duty guarding the frontier settlements of the young nation.2 John lived in various places and was engaged in various tasks during his lifetime. In 1818 he and Rebecca moved from Missouri to where Fulton, AR now stands and made only one crop there before he was forced to leave because of so much sickness. They started back toward Missouri, but stopped and made one crop near Batesville, AR. In 1820 they returned to within a mile of Jackson, Cape Girardeau County, MO where he farmed and raised live stock. He also entered politics and represented Cape Girardeau County in the State legislature from 1829 to 1836. He was elected to the State Senate, but resigned before his term began for some reason. He was a staunch Democrat in his political beliefs. In 1840 he moved once again to the State of Arkansas. He settled about 16 miles from Batesville where he was engaged in farming and the raising of live stock. In 1847 Elizabeth became ill and was an invalid for the rest of her life. During her illness they both were baptized and received into the Cumberland Presbyterian Church by Rev. Henry F. Bone. Batesville was the nearest Post Office until 1848 when one was established at Polk Bayou in the home of John and Elizabeth. He was appointed the Postmaster and remained so until 1862.2

John Martin, Sr. was too old to join the ranks, but his sons fought from the beginning to the end. John, Jr. was in the defense of Fort Moultrie when it was attacked; was in the Battle of Savannah, GA, and various other skirmishes. For more information see the memo on James Patrick, the brother of John, Jr.7,11 An interesting story is recounted by Mollie Douglas Martin in her history of the Martin family. While it may be simply legend, it does make an interesting story. While John was away from home in the war some Torries in the neighborhood went to his father's home and abused himd, one attempting to strike him with the old family Bible. When John, Jr. returned and learned of the affair, he was on his way to see the party and meeting him half way, they had a serious discussion concerning the incident. In other words they had a duel there on the road and the other party was slain.7 It was in the fall of 1806 that the family of John Martin, Jr. headed west. They had one daughter and four sons when they left. The oldest, Margaret, was 19 and the youngest, Allen, was 5. They carried their household goods and suppiles in wagons and on packhorses. While they were traveling through the Cheorkee country their last child, Jared Carswell, was born on October 11. The midwives at the delivery were two Indian women. John and his family never forgot the kindness and the helpfulness of these Indian women.
It would appear that John's decision to move west was not entirely due to the desire to find new land. Malaria was endemic to the area of Georgia in which they lived and infant mortality was very high. John and Elizabeth's first born, Samuel, died in 1790 and thrii of their four daughters died in infancy or early childhood. It was after the third daughter, Mary Ann, died in October 1805 that they decided to seek a healthier climate and, because of the excitement caused by the addition of new lands through the Louisiana Purchase and the great visions for the development of the Mississippi Valley, they made the decision to seak their health and fortune there. So they made the long journey to Cape Girardeau, Louisiana Territore, the area that later became the State of Missouri.
In the Colonial Records of the State of Georgia there is the following passport issued to John, Jr. to allow his to pass through the Indian Territories and to introduce him to the American Officials and citizens in the new Territory: Georgia, Jefferson County: We do certify that we have been acquainted with Mr. John Martin, the Bearer hereof, during the Revolutionary War, through which he conducted himself as a TRUE FRIEND to his country, and has since carried and borne the character of an upright honest and virtuous citizen. Understanding that he is about to travel to the Western Country and elsewhere we do recommend him to the attention of all Good-Men. Given under our hands at Louisville this 24th. day of June, 1806. Signed by John Twiggs, Maj. Genl. 2nd Division, Georgia Militia and Jared Irwin, BG. 2nd Division and 2nd. Brigade. Signed on behalf of the State of Georgia, His Excellency JOHN MILLEDGE, Governor and Commander in Chief.7,12 He left a will on 14 July 1808 at Cape Girardeau, Louisiana Territory, Given to Elizabeth, his wife, and to John, his son, the homeplace with household and kitchen furniture, the Loom and tackle, farming instruments, cattle and hogs and horses, to negro men, Jo and Bob and five negro women, Phillis, Clarissa, Hagar, Molly and Hannah. Land to be subdivided equally betwwn four sons John, Andrew, James Hutchinson and Allen to be received when they come of age. At the death or marriage of Elizabeth the homeplace to be dived equally between the children. To Margaret Jane was given one negro woman, Rachel, one young mare, two cows and calves 400 acres of land in Georgia. John was designated to settle all business matters in Georgia. Land was to be purchased for the youngest son Jared Carswell. The will was witnessed by Elisha White, Wright Daniel and John Davis. The executors were his wife Elizabeth, his son John and his friend Stephen Byrd.13

John Martin Sr.1,2

M, b. between 1732 and 1734, d. after 1780

Last Edited=1 Mar 2009
John Martin Sr. was born between 1732 and 1734 at County Antrim, Northern Ireland.1,3 He married Jane Hutchinson circa 1752 at County Antrim, Northern Ireland.4,1,3 John Martin Sr. died after 1780 probably in Jefferson County, GA Jefferson County was originally a part of St. George's Parish and, after Independence, a part of Burke County.5,1
John Martin Sr. and Jane Hutchinson emigrated in 1755 from County Antrim, Northern Ireland, Mollie Douglas Martin, a descendant who wrote one of the earlier histories of the Martin family, is probably right in her belief that John Martin, Sr., his wife Jane Hutchinson and their son John, Jr. came to the New World to escape the persecution Protestants were experiencing in their home country. Family tradition says the Martin family was of old Presbyterian faith and very firm in their beliefs. The New World offered new opportunities. The Martin family, like many others of the early settlers of the American colonies sought to find religious freedom on these shores. When John and Jane emigrated from North Ireland in 1755 they were coming to one of the newest of the colonies. It was establiehse in 1733 as a proprietary colony of General James Oglethorpe and was small in area, comprising only the tidewater lands between the Savannah and the Altamaha Rivers (including what are now Chatham, Bryan, Liberty, and McIntosh Counties and part of Effingham and Bulloch Counties), and had a small population estimated in 1753 at about 2,400. As a proprietary colony, General Oglethorpe selected the settlers. He established the city of Savannah and brought in settlers, mainly from the debtors' prisons of London, German Protestants, who settled in and aroung Savannah; and Highland Scots, who settled mainly along the Altamaha River. There was also some migration into the region from the New England region. In 1753 Georgia bcame a Royal Colony and restrictions on crops and trade and the importation of slaves were lifted. Immigragion both from Great Britian and the other American colonies increased. In 1761 the estimated population was 6, 000 whites and 3,500 blacks.4,6 John Rae (Rhea) and George Galphin were land entrepreneurs who received the endorsement of the Royal Governor, Sir James Wright, to bring immigrants from North Ireland and settle them on land near the Ogeechee River in what was to be called the town of Queensboro. This town never developed but the town of Louisville did spring up and eventually became the county seat of Jefferson County. Between 1768 and 1773 four shiploads of immigrants from North Ireland arrived in Georgia and settled on the land. According to a family tradition recorded by Mollie Douglas Martin John Martin, Sr. became friends with Rae and Galphin and was able to secure land in the area. We know his family was there after the Revolutionary War and, in his will, John Martin, Jr., the oldest son of John Martin, Sr., left 400 acres in Jefferson County to his daughter, Margaret Jane. One tract of this land borderd on land owned by Alexander Carswell.7,8,9
