James Hiram Martin Sr. was born on 9 February 1807 at Washington County, Georgia.7,4,5 He was the son of James Patrick Martin and Martha Nutt.6,5 James Hiram Martin Sr. married Martha Loucretia Reddish, daughter of Samuel B. Reddish and Susan Ansley, on 2 November 1837 at Randolph County, Georgia.4,8,9,10,5 James Hiram Martin Sr. died on 27 March 1897 at Robeline, Natchitoches Parish, Louisiana, at age 90 FROM THE CHURCH BOOK OF THE CENTRAL BAPTIST CHURCH NEAR ROBELINE, NATCHITOCHES PARISH, LOUISIANA:"Died: On March the 28th 1897 our beloved brother James H. Martin after an illness of several week. He had been a consistent member and deacon of Central Church ever since it's organization. He was 90 years and some months old."
The day he died it had been raining for several days, and the road was under water. They delayed the funeral for a day, but the water was still high. When they took the casket to Central Baptist Church for the funeral men carrying long sticks waded in front of the wagon to probe for washed-out holes in the road. At times the water was yup to the bed of the wagon, and they had to be careful that the wagon didn't tip over.11,12,5,13 He was buried after 27 March 1897 at Central Baptist Church Cemetery, near Robeline, Natchitoches Parish, Louisiana.2,13
Nellie Vogt tells the following in her book.
Once Jim was sick with lagrippe (flu) but had business in town that couldn't wait. He took Jack, one of his slaves, with him and the two rode horseback into Robeline. As the day wore on Jim's fever went up and he became very ill. Jack couldn't ride one horse, lead the other and taked care of Jim all at the same time, so he took Jim to the hotel. Jim was put to bed in a room, and the innkeeper promised to keep an eye on him while Jack rode home for help. Jack hurried home, where he and Miss Creassie fixed a bed in the surrey for the sick man. They didn't want to leave the two worried little girls, Bony and Code, at home, so took them along. As they neard town they could smell, but not see, a dead animal. Suddenly Bony burst into tears and Creasie asked, "Whatever is wrong, Bonny?" Between sobs Bony said, "Pa's dead, Ma. I can smell him a'stinkin!"14      He immigrated in 1854      In 1854 James and Lucretia Martin and their six daughters left Georgia for their new home in Louisiana. They went by steamboat to New Orleans and then made their way upriver from New Orleans to Natchitoches Parish, which is south and west of Bienville Parish, where the John Nutt Martin family lived. Their large farm was between Marthaville and Robeline in the western edge of Natchitoches Parish and about 20 miles from the town of Natchitoches.15      James Hiram Martin Sr. is head of household in the Us 1860 of Natchitoches Parish, Louisiana. Enumerated with James Hiram Martin Sr. was Lacero Fernandoz Martin, Martha Loucretia Reddish, Cora Cremonia Martin, Alma Lavonia Martin, Susan Octavia Martin and Thomas B. Gilbert.16 James Hiram Martin was a big man, 6' 4"tall, with the red hair and quick temper of his Irish ancestors. We believe he married when he was about 18, and became the father of three sons, but we do not know the names of his wife or sons. His first wife must have died, but we don't know when.
Nellie Vogt recounts some of the difficulties the Martins, as well as every one else, suffered during and after the Civil War.
James Hiram did not serve in the Civil Warbecause he had a clubfoot, but he and his family were affected like every one else. Such staple items as coffee, white sugar and salt were unavailable during the War and for some time afterward. Families coped with these shortages in various ways. The Martins parched pods of okra and ground them with toasted pecans to make "coffee". They dug up the soil in the smokehouse and somehow managed to leach the salt out for reuse in preserving meat.
Cotton was the money crop for the Martins, as it was for most others. Just before the Civil War ended Jim sold 15 bales of cotton and was paid in Confederate money, which was worthless as soon as the War was over. He kept the money in a big trunk for a long time, thinking that it might eventually regain some value. There was a trunkful of it because inflation had been rampant.
Jim was nearly 60 years old when the War ended, and much poorer than he had been, but he still owned his land and some fine horses. One day one of his former slaves came to the main house with word that carpetbaggers were in the area. Jim and the Negro quickly rounded up the horses and took them to a hiding place in the woods. The carpetbaggers arrived at the house, demanding money, jewelry, or any other valuables. Lucretia told them to be on their way, there was nothing left for them to steal. The carpetbaggers were leaving when Jim appeared and met them. Creasie was vexed that he hadn't stayed hidden in the woods, because she didn't know what the carpetbaggers would do to him, but they left without harming him. When Jim came into the house Creasie exclaimed, "Whydid you come back, why didn't you stay hidden in the woods where you were safe?" Jim replied that he knew the trusted Negro could take care of the horses, but he was worried about her and the girls. He told her, "My place is taking care of my womenfolk!" They were fortunate that they all escaped unharmed, as carpetbaggers, who were often white fortune hunters, could be vicious.17

James Patrick Martin was probably born circa 1758 at St. Phillip's Parish, Georgia, St. Philip's Parish was in what is now Bryan County, GA. The land was near the present day town of Midway.5,1 He was the son of John Martin Sr. and Jane Hutchinson.2,3,4 James Patrick Martin married Nancy McKenzie circa 1785 at Georgia.4 James Patrick Martin married Martha Nutt, daughter of John Nutt and Catherine Cowsart, on 25 March 1794 at Washington County, Georgia.2,6,7,8 James Patrick Martin died on 7 July 1811 at Georgia.9,10
James Patrick Martin enlisted in the 1st. South Carolina Regiment, commanded by Col. C. Pinckney on on 4 November 1775 Georgia was one of the last of the Colonies to become involved in the conflict with England that became the Revolutionary War. Unlike its neighboring state of South Carolina Georgia had no specific complaints against the crown. It was not represented in the Continental Congress of 1774. On January 18, 1775, however, a meeting was called in Savannah to select representatives. Only five of the 12 parishes were represented so the three representatives elected declined to serve. A second meeting was convened on July 4 and all 12 parishes were represented and a full congressional delegation was selected. So one can see that Georgia was not at all unified in its support of the Colonial revolt. There was strong opposition from those who supported the crown.
In this time of decision, the second son of John Martin, James Patrick, being about 17 years old, was the first of his fiamily to join the cause. He enlisted November 4, 1775 in the regiment being raised in Charleston by Charles C. Pinckney, a member of one of the wealthiest and most powerful families in South Carolina. A week later John Martin, Jr. joined the same regiment, seemingly as a replacement of James Patrick, the records also show that James served until Aug. 8, 1778.
So the sons of John Martin, Sr. made their decision for American Independence seven months before the Declaration of Independence.. There are records showing that John, Jr. was discharged Aug 3, 1778 and James Patrick was discharged August 8, 1778.
James and John both received bounty land grants for their service in the War. This land was located in Washington County. There is a letter in the Pension Office that places James Martin in Washington County where he lived in the early 1800's and also cites the family Bible records of his marriage to Martha Nutt and the date of his death and of Martha's death. This makes it possible to positively identify the James Martin and John Martin of the 1st South Carolina Regiment as our James and John. This is important because when you examine the Colonial Records of Georgia you discover that there were numerous James and John Martins and sometimes it is almost impossible to distinguish one from the other.11,12,13 He ended military service on 8 August 1778 at Charleston, Charleston County, South Carolina.14

The following article is excerpted from Arkansas and Its Pople, A History, 1541-1930.

Although too young to be actively in service in the Confederate Army, one of his proudest recollections was his direction of his father's slaves in helping to throw up the last breastworks before the Federal occupation of Little Rock.
Another interesting incident of Mr. Martin's life occurred during the Brooks-Baxter war [a struggle in Reconstruction days between two parties trying to seize control of the State government], when he unspiked the one cannon available for the Baxter party, and set up "Lady Baxter" in the old State Capitol grounds, where it now stands. [The Baxter party won.]
Mr. Martin received his education from
private teachers, and at Judge Eastman's school, a private school of considerable prestige in that section, and on the close of the war learned the machinist's trade. From 1880=1890 he engaged in railroad building with his brothers, James Allen Martin and Henry G. Martin. In 1890, he took up the surveying and estimating of timber lands and carried this on from Mexico to Canada. (See the note on his father Jared, Sr.) He was accepted as an authority in this field and continued in it actively until his retirement in 1912. Mr. Martin at the time of his death was the oldest living member of the Christian Church in Little Rock, and in his later years attended the church on Third Street, of which he was a charter member. His parents were among the founders of the church in 1832, and Mr Martin and his three brothers served as elders for many years.
A member of a well-known family, and a man of the finest qualities of personal character, Jared Carswell Martin deserves mention in any chronicle of Arkansas.... The influence of a sincere and devout Christian character, such as that of Mr Martin, cannot be lost, but will remain a vital factor in the lives of all those who knew him.9,10

Jared Carswell Martin Sr. was born on 11 October 1806 at Cherokee Indian Nation, Georgia, Jared Carswell was born in the Cherokee Indian Nation in what is now western Georgia while his family were in the process of moving to Cape Girardeau in the Louisiana Territory and what is now a part of the State of Missouri.4,3 He was the son of John Martin Jr. and Elizabeth Allen.2,3 Jared Carswell Martin Sr. married Mary Polly Douglas on 25 January 1827 at Mablevale, Pulaski County, Arkansas.5,3,1 Jared Carswell Martin Sr. died on 7 November 1857 at Mablevale, Pulaski County, Arkansas, at age 51.6,3
Jared Carswell Martin Sr. emigrated in 1821 from Cape Girardeau, Cape Girardeau County, Missouri, to Little Rock, Pulaski County, AR.7 The following are some notes about Jared Carswell Martin and his sons excerpted from History of Arkansas written by Fay Hempstead.

Jared Carswell Martin becames a prosperous planter and a large slave owner [in Pulaski County], and on the old homestead established by him in the pioneer days, as early as 1830, were born all his children and there William A....maintained his home until his death. Mr. Martin became a man of influence and prominence in his community....He stood exemplar of the highest principles and was a fine representative of the sturdy pioneer type, who, though lacking in academic training, possessed that sterl;ing integrity of character and that fine moral fiber which go so far to further the development of a new country.
The sons of Jared C. Martin all learnecivil engineering under the able preceptorship of their uncle, Allen Martin, an engineer for the United States government, who surveyed a great deal of the land of Pulaski County and other portions of the State of Arkansas in the territorial days. The late James A. Martin was city engineer of Little rock for a time. He also served for four years as deputy state treasurer and upon the death of Oliver Basham was appointed state treasurer to fill the unexpired term. He also served with distinction during the last two years of the Civil war, under Generals Fagan and Hawthorne. Silas Carswell, a son of James, was also a civil engineer of note and moved to the state of Washington as an employee of the Harriman Railroad Company.
Henry G., another son of Jared Carswell,
received his early educational discipline in Little Rock, where he engaged in civil engineering for a number of years. In 1898, however he discontinued his work in this connection and after that time his interests were largely concerned with the timber industry, principally as estimator. He came to be known as one of the most expert timber estimators in the United States. For the great lumber concerns he made complete estimates and reports on some of the largest timber tracts in the southern and southwestern states and in Mexico, these sections representing millions of dollars worth of lumber. Many of the large lumber corporations capitalized on the strength of Mr. Martin's figures. His labors were indefatigable and he made success not an accident by a logical result.8,9
