David Bruton Hargiss Sr. was born in 1881 at Hughes Springs, Texas.¹ He was the son of Thomas Alexander Hargiss and Martha E Bruton.¹ David Bruton Hargiss Sr. married Fleda Curtis Camp on 23 December 1906 at Naples, Texas.¹ David Bruton Hargiss Sr. died on 14 July 1960 at Orange, Orange County, Texas.¹
In his early years, he was a farmer. He also was a fiddler, and
was always in demand to perform at dances or other occasions in his
area.
In 1918, he sold his farm and moved to Orange, where is father in
law had already moved and set up business. He became a grocer, and
owned several stores in Orange & Port Arthur Texas. During the
depression, he would never refuse food to anyone who could not pay for
it. Anyone who needed food could write him an IOU and get it. He put
himself out of business by doing this. When he finally decided to
close his last store, he took all the rest of his inventory home for
his family, and closed the store. He went out back and burned over
$30,000 worth of IOU's.

He went by the name Jack. He owned a big farm and was a barber in
Hughes Spring. He was a big man, and a flashy dresser. He was very
handsome and loved children.¹
