     John Hargis was born in 1762 at Fairfax County, probably Virginia.³ He was the son of John Hargis.² John Hargis married Jane Pyron on 3 June 1778 at Caswell County, North Carolina.^3,4 John Hargis died before 1824 at Kentucky.²
     Some reseachers give John's parents as Samuel Hargis and Elizabeth Waddington. I think it m ay be Abraham Hargis and Elizabeth Nalley. Another son, Thomas Hargis, married Bridget Van Ho ok and her family lived in Caswell Co, NC where John and Jane Pyron were married. Also, seve ral of the Van Hook family went to Washington/Russell Co, VA, as did John and Jane before set tling in Pulaski Co, KY.
Also, several other sons of Abraham and Elizabeth were married in Caswell Co, NC.

The 1787 Census shows John Hargis (Hargiss) as a resident of Russell Co, VA. The Revolutiona ry War records show John Hargis as being a soldier in the infantry. Russell County is in wes tern Virginia near the Kentucky border and the family history says that John Hargis went thro ugh the Cumberland Gap with Daniel Boone was was with him in several adventures. Boone's firs t attempt to settle Kentucky was in 1773 according to his biographers. John would have bee n only 10 years old at the time. Boone's
first expedition was unsuccessful and he returned to live near Castles Wood in the Clinch Val ley that would later become Russell County, Virginia. Therefore, the Boones and the Hargise s were in the same sparsely populated are of southwest Virginia. Boone moved to Kentucky i n 1775, as did the ancestors of Abraham Lincoln.

John Hargis married Jane Pyron (Bryant) sometime between 1780 and 1799 and the family moved t o Pulaski County, Kentucky. In a letter from Patteann Daniel-Beverley to Jerri Brown, the Pu laski County Historical Society, on 16 Feb. 1998:
The John for I am searching married JANE PYRON in 1778 in Caswell County, NC. However , in research I have been doing on the Pyron family, I have come across the spelling o f Pyrant...
which indeed could have been mistaken at some time for BRYANT. Also, because so many o f the names of the Hargises who were in North Carolina at this time appear in later Pula ski Co, KY records, it certainly seems possible that Jane Bryant and Jane Pyron/Pyrant a re the same lady. In the copy of the land application that you sent, one of the witness es listed is Daniel
Stogsdill. The family I have for Jane and John Hargis lists a daughter Sally Hargis, wh o married David Stogsdell. The land record also refers to a Sarah Stogsdell and I su ppose Sally
and Sarah might also be the same person, though I have no record of that fact at this po int.
The other name in the land apllication, James Hargis, is also one of the children I hav e for Jane and John. He was married to a Polly Brinson there in Pulaski Co, KY.

The 1790 records do not show a John Hargis, but in 1799 Jane Hargis is listed as a landowne r in Pulaski County. The Pulaski tax lists show the following Hargis names: William, Jenny , Abraham, Thomas and John between the years 1802-1829.

"Many Hargis families were in North Carolina before the Revolution. Because Samuel married th ere, he may have been born there. I have no proof. For searching for the early Hargis recor ds, they were in Maryland, Pennsylvania, Delaware, Virginia, and the Carolinas. The DAR PATR IOTS INDEX NAMES several. In Kentucky are found land grants in different counties. In Gwath ney's HISTORICAL REGISTER OF VIRGINIANS IN THE REVOLUTION are eleven Hargis names.

John is listed in FIRST FAMILIES OF VIRGINIA as of 1619. George came in 1642. William and A nn came as servants in 1659 to Maryland and Thomas came in 1663. Some people say they were b rothers. There is no proof. I have searched in Baltimore, Annapolis and Washington. There i s no proof of their wives' family names.

They bought land in Charles County, Maryland, in 1668. It was required that land in the colo ny be given a name. They called it "Hargis Hope."

William left a will in 1685. He named his wife, Ann, and three sons: John Draper, Roger an d William. Thomas left a will in 1716. He did not name his wife. He named four sons: Will iam, Thomas, Abraham and Francis.

In 1779 Ann Hargis, in Washington County, Virginia, was made administrator of the estate of J ohn. No children were named.

Russell County was formed from Washington in 1785. John signed a petition there to form th e new county of Russell in 1785.

In Russell County, John and Thomas paid taxes in 1787-1788; two Johns in 1810 and Samuel i n 1797.

John and Lydia witnessed a will in 1803 and were heirs of John Counts, Sr. in 1802. They sol d land on the Clinch River in 1816.

In 1820 Whitesides Hargis sold land on the Clinch River and his wife, Elizabeth.

In 1815 John sold household and stock to Whitesides. The agreement was for $100. It is i n a will book, but was not a will. One witness was Winnifred Blare Hargis.

In 1798 William Dopson in Hampshire County, Virginia, left land to his grandson, William Dops on Hargis.
This Hargis family came to Kentucky by 1810. In Christian County, Kentucky, Hargis marriage s were:

Abraham Hargis married Mary Landsford, 1806
John Hargis Married Polly Bearden, 1819

Accounts.

     John Hargis was born on 7 January 1792 at Virginia.² He was the son of John Hargis and Jane Pyron.² John Hargis married Sabra Morgan on 3 November 1815 at Knox County, Kentucky.³ John Hargis married Nancy Unknown.⁴ John Hargis died on 20 June 1859 at Pulaski County, Kentucky, at age 67.² He was buried in 1859 at New Hope Cemetery, Pulaski County, Kentucky.²
