     The first Hargis in America seems to be one George Hargis (Hargase) who was transported to Virginia by a John Benton in 1642. This is validated by a grant of 1,250 acres on the south bank of the Rappahannock River some 15 miles above its mouth to John Benton for the transportation of 25 persons, including George Hargase.⁵

     The father of George may have been Louis, who is said to have come from Normandy (France), bu t earlier family was in Denmark.

Though Normandy is part of France, it was actually a Danish colony in France that was establi shed by an agreement between Rollo (a Danish viking) and Charles III of France in the year 91 1, establishing the Duchy of Normandy that was ruled almost autonomously by Rollo and his des cendants for many generations. The Duchy of Normandy was officially dis-established around 1 400, and power reverted to the King of France. However, the majority of the inhabitants woul d have still been Danes even into the 16th century. This would mean there would still be fam ily ties between Denmark and Normandy.

Therefore, it is likely that even though Louis may have come from Normandy, he would have bee n of Danish descent.¹
