     Lazarus was born on Tuesday, October 6, 1812 in Henderson Co., Kentucky, USA. He was the son of Capt. Lazarus Whitehead Powell and Nancy Ann McMahon. Lazarus, age 25, was married to Harriet Ann Jennings November, 1837. Lazarus died on Wednesday, July 3, 1867 in Henderson Co., Kentucky, USA, at age 54 years, 8 months and 27 days.1 His body was interred on Thursday, July 4, 1867 in Fernwood Cemetery, Henderson, Henderson Co., Kentucky, USA.2
     He was elected Governor of the State of Kentucky on the Democratic ticket in 1851. After completion of his term he resumed the practice of law in Henderson, Kentucky. During the Mormon uprising in 1858, he and Major General MCCLULLOCH of Texas were named commissioners by the United States Government to negotiate with the Mormons. Through their efforts a threatened military move, on the part of the Government, was averted when the Mormons were induced to accept the Government's proposals.

In 1858 he was elected United States Senator from Kentucky and served in that capacity from 1859 to 1865, a period of great political excitement. Being a Union Democrat and a slaveholder, his seat in the Senate was beset with many difficulties. Garrett DAVIS, a colleague from Kentucky, in 1863, publicly accused him of pro-Confederate sympathies and at the same time introduced an expulsion resolution in the Senate. However, the resolution was quickly defeated. Lazarus (age 27) was listed as head of household with his wife Harriet on the 1840 Census, on June 1, 1840 in Henderson Co., Kentucky, USA. Gov. Lazarus Whitehead Powell Jr. was employed as a Lawyer as of June 1, 1850 in Henderson Co., Kentucky, USA. Lazarus (age 37) was listed as the head of a family on the 1850 Census, on June 1, 1850 in Household No. 15, Henderson Co., Kentucky, USA.3 He was employed as a Governor as of from 1851 to 1855 in Kentucky, USA.4 He was employed as a Lawyer as of June 1, 1860 in Henderson Co., Kentucky, USA.
