Civil War Confederate Brigadier General, U. S. Congressman. He led a distinguished career in Mississippi and as a Confederate commander. He was mortally wounded on the second day at Gettsburg, July 2, 1863, during the attack of Longstreet's Ccorps on the Peach Orchard and Wheat Field. Cause of death: Gunshot wound.

He is buried in Greenwood Cemetery, Jackson, MS. Government stone is a centaph in the Confederate Section. He is buried in an unmarked grave in the Barksdale plot near his nephew, Harris Barksdale.
