Most of the following are land patents, with a few Military Warrants and
Homesteads.
Land Patents document the transfer of land ownership from
the federal government to individuals.
Military Warrants are an Act of Congress which granted land
to soldiers instead of pay.
Homestead - Homestead Act of 1862 allowed people to settle
up to 160 acres of public land if they lived on it for 5 years and grew crops or
made improvements. The land did not cost anything per acre but the settler
did pay a filing fee.
Land descriptions are written as:
E 1/2 of the SW 1/4 in 33-14N-10E of 3rd P.M. which reads
the East one-half of the Southwest one-quarter in Section 33, Township 14 North,
Range 10 East of the 3rd Principal Meridian.

these presents shall come, Greeting:
Know ye, That, in consideration of military service performed by John Hull (a
sergeant for the War) to the United States, in the Virginia Line on Continental
Establishment, and in pursuance of an Act of the Congress of the United States,
passed on the 10th day of August in the year 1790, entitled "An Act to
enable the Officers and Soldiers of the Virginia Line on Continental
Establishment to obtain titles to certain lands lying north-west of the River
Ohio, between the little Miami and Sciota; and another Act of the said Congress,
passed on the 9th day of June in the year 1794, amendatory of the said Act,
there is granted by the said United States unto Thomas Rardin, assignee of
Robert While who was assignee of the said John Hull, a certain tract of
land, containing Four hundred acres, situate between the little Miami and Sciota
Rivers, north-west of the River Ohio, as by survey bearing date the twenty
second day of May in the year one thousand seven hundred and ninety eight and
bounded and described as follows, to-wit, Survey of four hundred acres of land
on a Military warrant No. 1095, in favor of the said John Hull, a
like quantity, On the North West Fork of Sciota & Brush Creek Begginning at
a Beech and large poplar corner to William Merricks survey No. 2804,

the Creek to a stake, thence South forty eight degrees East two hundred and
thirty poles to two white Walnuts and a sugar tree, Thence South forty two
degrees East One hundred and twenty poles, to a Poplar, Sugar tree & Dogwood
tree, Thence North seventy five degrees East One hundred and eight poles to two
Dogwoods & a Maple, Thence South fifteen degrees East thirty eight poles to
a poplar and Sugar tree, Thence South twenty nine degrees East one hundred and
twenty poles to a Birch corner to Merrick thence with his line
South.....fifty seven degrees West One hundred and eighty two poles crossing the
Creek to the Beginning. With the appurtenances: To have and to hold the
said tract of land, with the appurtenances unto the said Thomas Rardin
and his heirs and assigns forever.
In Witness whereof, the said Thomas Jefferson, President of the United States of
America, hath caused the Seal of the United States to hereunto affixed, and
signed the same with his hand at the City of Washington the tenth day of July in
the year of our Lord One Thousand Eight Hundred and One and of the Independence
