John was the son of William Harve and Patsollie Pope Spain. He was married to Ella Patterson and they were the parents of 4 children, Mary Myrtle, Raymond, Fritz and Rena Spain. Ella died on 24 Nov 1915 and John remained a widower until his death in 1944.

John Spain, age 86, familiarly known to his friends as "Uncle John" passed away last week at the home of Daniel Persful. He was born in Paragould Dec 1858 and had resided in Randolph County for several years. He had been a member of the Freewill Baptist Church for about 30 years. He is survived by 4 children, Raymond of St Louis, Mo, Myrtle of Arizona, Fritz and Rena of Oregon. Pocahontas Star Herald, Dec 14, 1944. We were very sorry to learn of the death of Uncle Johnnie Spain. He died last week at Daniel Persful's home. Until a few years ago Uncle Johnnie was a resident of Noland. He was 85 years old. Peace to him. Pocahontas Star Herald, Noland News, Dec 7, 1944
