John Newton of Westby

St. John the Baptist Church in Colsterworth is a splendid place to gain a
lot of local knowledge, and is well worth a visit. The people of
Colsterworth that I met in the church on my visit to this lovely village
are very friendly and helpfull. The church looks after the churchyard
well every grave is accessable and kept weed free. No-one knows for
certain when the church was built, but when Paulinus was Archbishop of
York in 628 he entered Mercia preaching christianity and converting many
baptizing them in the river Trent at Torkesby. Colsterworth church was
probably founded between A.D. 684 and A.D. 700.

In 1066 when William the Conqueror invaided, plans were made to spread
Christianity and work began to build Abbys and Cathedrals, and enlarge
existing churches. St. John the Baptist in Colsterworth was one such
church to recieve an extention.

The font is dated around 1170 and is most probably the first font used in
St. John's, as the early Christians were baptized in the river Trent. The
original inner bowel cracked with old age and was replaced around 1876.

Just in front of the font is a memorial to Mr. Peter Groves who died ion
1798 aged 100 years.

Immediately behind the font is the bell tower room housing six bells. On
the wall in the tower room can be seen a list of 5040 changes in two
hours and forty minutes on Nov 20th, 1918 in thanks for the arnistice
which marked the end of the Great War 1914 - 1918. Another list gives the
team who rang quarter of a peal of Plain Bob Minor (1260 changes) on 2nd
Feb 1953 the year of the corination of Queen Elizabeth 11.

There is quite a bit of information within this lovely church about the
Newton Family of Woolsthorpe who worshiped there for many years.

Sir Isaac Newton born on Christmas day 1642 and who was not expected to
live, grew to be a great man who is mentioned in all good history books
for his scientific work. Behind the organ in Colsterworth church almost
out of sight is a sundial carved by Sir Isaac Newton when he was a boy,
it was donated to the church by Mr. Christopher Turnor of Stoke Rochford
Hall. The Turnor's purchased Woolsthorpe Manor from the Newton family
heir in 1733. The sundial was found in an out building at the Manor
house, but was concealed from sight by a coal shed.

The Newton family of Woolsthorpe (near Colsterworth) were farmers in
Lincolnshire for many generations, having gradually built up an estate in
Woolsthorpe. The estate began with a purchase of land made by John Newton
of Westby not far from Woolsthorpe. John (Isaac's great grandfather)
farmed sheep on the land and did well for himself. In 1623 Isaac's
grandfather Robert Newton added to the land by purchasing a nearby farm
along with Woolsthorpe Manor house. In 1639 Isaac's father also called
Isaac Newton inherrited both farms as a marriage dowry, Isaac senior
married Hannah Ayscough in April 1642 and six months later Isaac senior
died leaving a pregnant widow.

Hannah went into labour earlier than expected, and on Christmas day 1642
Sir Isaac Newton was born, a very small and very weak child not expected
to survive. When Isaac was three years old his mother re-married,
Barnabas Smith a vicar from North Witham the couple never lived at
Woolsthorpe Manor. Isaac was brought up by his grandparents in
Woolsthorpe. He went to school at Grantham until he was seventeen then
his mother is said to have ordered him back home to tend the estate, and
to stop wasting time at school. She didn't place much value on education,
her first husband was illiterate and made his mark with an X for a
signature, she must have felt it was time for her son to earn a living.
It was Hannah's brother-in-law from her second marriage (Rev. William
Ayscough) who saw Isaac had no potential as a farmer, and he talked her
into sending him back to school and eventually she agreed. Isaac Newton
went to Trinity College Cambridge in 1661, and received his degree in
1665 the same year the plague became wide spread and Isaac returned home
to Woolsthorpe. He returned to Trinity College in 1667.

In 1679 Isaac's mother became very ill and Isaac went home to personally
nurse her, they had never been very close. Maybe Isaac saw this as a last
chance to get to know his mother, and perhaps get a little motherly
affection that had been so lacking in his life. However the time they had
together was short his mother died in June 1679 and Isaac returned to
Cambridge.

In 1705 Isaac was knighted by Queen Anne for his service to science.
After 1696 Isaac rarely visited Woolsthorpe despite rhumours that he
intended to retire to there. Sir Isaac Newton died in London on 20 March
1727, his body is buried in Westminster Abbey. He left the Woolsthorpe
estate valued at £32,000 to his relations. The National Trust own it now
and they purchased it in 1942 they maintain and preserved it for our
future herritage, one of the National Trust guides at Woolsthorpe Manor
being my cousin and donor of one of the Welbourn family trees on this
website Mr. Albert Brown, showed me around Woolsthorpe Manor a couple of
years ago with great enthusiasm for the place. Pointing out the
experiment set in a bedroom closet that shows how Isaac Newton managed to
refract light through a prisim, making a very pretty glistening bright
rainbow effect on the opposite wall. In another bedroom where Isaac was
born is a plaque that reads "Nature and nature's law lay hid in night:
God said, Let Newton be! and all was light". We saw the famous apple
trees standing  in the orchard, these were made famous by Sir Isaac
Newton's law of gravitation. These are just two of the many great
discoverys made by Sir Isaac Newton at Woolsthorpe Manor a place worth
visiting.

Sir Isaac Newton pondered on religion being a scientist he studied the
Bible with his strong unothodox beliefs, that rejected the teachings of
the Trinity. However he did not reject God in fact he placed God firmly
in the centre of his universe, but his interest and love of theology for
about thirty years of his life meant he could not accept everything the
church believed in. Not wanting to rock the boat or offend anyone Sir
Isaac Newton kept his thoughts in the main to himself. I am a Theosophist
a way of life based on thelogy, so I understand his manner of thoughts on
religion and I say live and let live in harmony each to their own
beliefs. Dave Allan a comedian and television comedy show host of a few
years ago had a fantastic non offensive  ending to his show that sums up
my feelings on religion rather well, Dave would always say "Good night
and may your God go with you".

From Isaac's humble entrance into this world he went on to achieved much
in his life time and understood more than most.

The son of Sir Isaac's father's brother was a carpenter called
John. He was afterward appointed gamekeeper to Sir Isaac, as
lord of the manor, and died at the age of sixty in 1725. This
John had a son, Robert, (John?) who was Sir Isaac's second
cousin, and who became possessed of the whole land estates at
and near Woolsthorpe, which belonged to the great Newton, as
his heir-at-law. [note 3]

heir-at-law. [note 3] Robert (John?) became a worthless and
dissolute person, who very soon wasted this ancient patrimony,
and falling down with a tobacco-pipe in his mouth when he was
drunk, it broke in his throat, and put an end to his life at
the age of thirty years, in 1737."
