Alexander and Olga Borodenko with children Ada, Walter, Theo, Matt and
Alex Jr. immigrated from (Dubno) Bakivce, Ukraine, crossing over on the
Ship Oscar II and docking in Halifax. They arrived in Dominion City July
3, 1928 where they farmed until Alexander and Olga retired and moved to
Winnipeg in 1952.
Children born in the Dominion City area were Nick, Helen, Peter, Ruth,
Vera and Henry. Now residing in the Toronto area are Ada, Walter, Helen,
Vera and Henry while Alex Jr. and Peter are in Winnipeg, Ruth in
California and Matt and Nick in Dominion City.
Walter, Theo and Matt served overseas in World War II and Nick in the
Korean War. On their return from World War II in 1946, Matt and Theo
started a restaurant business on the main corner in Dominion City and
called it Montreal Cafe. Theo remained until his marriage to Joyce
Lepischuk of Stuartburn in November, 1947. He then moved to Winnipeg and
worked for the Coca-Cola Co. until his retirement to Strathclair in 1981.
Matt and Rae, (married June 30, 1947) continued in the restaurant
business. In January, 1949, during a big snow storm, their first daughter
Karen was born at home. The same year Matt bought the Dominion City
Theatre which he operated until 1962 when he tore it down and sold the
property to the Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce. In 1953 a second
daughter, Debbie was born. Both girls grew up and graduated school in
Dominion City, later moving to Winnipeg.
In August, 1975 Karen married Melvin Siemens of Altona, and Debbie
married George Giesbrecht of St. Laurent. Their children are Tennille
Siemens (1981), Tanya (1978) and Tiffany Giesbrecht (1981).
In July, 1959, the Montreal Cafe was sold to Eva Pawliw and her brother,
the late Peter Kandia.
In 1962 Matt started a Massey Ferguson dealership in the old Schwark
building under the firm name of Matt's Implement Sales Ltd. and in 1966
constructed a new garage building on Highway 201. He acted as Town Police
for several years and the local Auctioneer.
Nick, Irene and family moved to Dominion City from Winnipeg in June,
1974, and Nick worked with Matt in the dealership. Due to poor health,
Matt sold the Massey Ferguson franchise in December, 1975 and is retiring
in Dominion City. He still does auctioneering and turns into Dominion
City's Santa Claus at Christmas
