The Murray's

John and Sarah Murray moved from Liverpool to Blue Town (Sheerness, Isle of Sheppy, Kent) when their son Thomas was born around 1841. John was a Shipwright and may have worked at a naval dockyard in Sheerness. By 1851, they had moved back to Liverpool and were living at 11 Frank Street (Toxteth Park) with their nephew Thomas Barr (2, b. Holyhead, Anglesea).

In the 1860 Gore's Trade Directory of Liverpool, John is listed as a Grocer and Shipwright and his address was 60 Park Road (Toxteth Park). They still lived at that address at the time of the 1861 census. Thomas's profession at that time was a Bookkeeper, but by 1863, at the time of his marriage, he had become a Baker. He married Sarah Ann Mudge on 6th September 1863 at St. Michael's (Toxteth Park).

Thomas and Sarah had three sons between 1865 and 1870: Thomas (b~1865-66), William James (b. 28/09/1867 at 73 Paddington) and Charles Frederick (c. 24/04/1870 at St. Peter, Liverpool). At the time of the 1871 census, Thomas (29) and Sarah (27) were living at 73 Paddington (West Derby) with their children. Thomas profession was now Baker and Confectioner. Thomas and Sarah also had two daughters: Harriet Martineau (b. ~1872, Liverpool) and Florence (b. ~1874, Birkenhead).

The whereabouts of Thomas and Sarah at the time of the 1881 census is not known, but their children were living with their grandparents (John and Sarah) at 204 Beckwith Street in Birkenhead at that time.

William James moved back to Liverpool before 1893, as his address stated when he married was Cornwallis Street, Liverpool. He married Elizabeth Procter (19) on the 10th March 1893 at The Registry Office, Toxteth Park. William James followed in his father's footsteps and became a Confectioner. His brothers Thomas and Charles Frederick also became Confectioners and both are listed as having shops on Conway Street (Birkenhead) in the 1892 Kelly's Cheshire Trades Directory.

William James and Elizabeth had 6 children; Florence Martineau (b.~1896), William Allan (b. 1897) Amy (b. 1898-99), Norman, Willemina (b. 27/09/1905) and Elizabeth (b. 18/3/1908). In 1901, William James (32) and Elizabeth (25) were living at 89 St. Anne Street with their children. William was working as a Commercial Traveller and Elizabeth was a Sweet Shop Keeper.
