The Martin's

Joseph Martin was born on 13th April 1860 and baptised on 17th April 1860 at St. Michaels RC, Diocese of Clougher (Enniskillen, Ireland). His parents were James Martin (Shoemaker) and Catherine Irvine. At some point, Joseph moved to England and at the time of the 1881 census, he was working as a General Labourer and living in Oswestry (Lord Street), Shropshire.

Shortly after his 21st birthday, Joseph married Mary Davies at St Mary's Catholic Church (Wrexham) on the 30th of May 1881. Joseph and Mary both lived in the Oswestry area, but may have travelled to Wrexham, so that they could marry in a catholic church.

They settled in the Oswestry area and had two children: John Charles (b.~1881) and Sarah Catherine (Cassie, b. ~1885). Between 1885 and 1887, they decided to move to Liverpool. Joseph worked as a Soda/Mineral Water Bottler and the family lived on Arkwright Street (Everton). Between 1887 and 1905, they had 10 children: Rose Hannah and Bridget Agnes (twins b. 1887), Lucy Ann (c. 19th July 1888), Nora Josephine (b. 3rd December 1890), Joseph (b. 13th May 1892), Margaret Geraldine (b. 1894), Hugh (b. 1896), Mary (Molly, b. 1899), Dorothy (Dolly, b.1901) and Francis (b. 21st June 1905).

In relation to his work as a Soda/ Mineral Water Bottler, Joseph had travelled to America to help to install a bottling machine (The Belfast Machine). Also in the 1890's, Joseph won a company raffle. The extent of his winnings is not known, but he was able to set up his own business and on the 1901 census he is described as a Coal Dealer and had moved to 24 Lambert Street (Liverpool).
