The Gillespie's

Michael Gillespie was born in County Mayo (Ireland) and married Maria/Mary of County Sligo. They moved from Ireland to Liverpool prior to 1841 and had one child, Michael J. (b.1842-45). Michael Senior worked at the Liverpool Docks as a Dock Labourer or Stevedore and the family lived near to the docks at Brick Street (1841-1851) and Sparling Street (1861 census).

Michael and Maria's son, Michael Gillespie (Junior), married Elizabeth Fallon on 9th November 1869 at The Holy Cross Church in Liverpool. Michael was a Plate Layer at the time and later worked as a Dock Labourer and a Stevedore (as his father had). Michael and Elizabeth had 7 children: Mary Jane (b. 4/12/1870 at 1 Court Kitchen Street), James (b. 1872-73), Henry (b.1875-76), Elizabeth (b.1877 -78), Francis (b. 20/04/1881 at 3 Court Norfolk Street), Margaret (b.1883-84) and Thomas (b. 24/10/1887 at 42 New Hall Street).

Michael and Elizabeth moved house often, but always stayed within a small area in Liverpool near to the docks. Streets where they lived include Kitchen Street (Dec 1870- Jan 1870), Bridgewater Street (1871 census; living with Michael and Maria), Norfolk Street (1881 census), Court Blundell Street (1883) and New Hall Street (~1887 - 1895).
