John Humes, Jr. husband of  (1) Elizabeth Carlin,  can be found  living in Richmond, Virginia,  Henrico and
Smyth Counties, Virginia  between 1815 and 1835 --the years he was married to (2) Margaret Purse.  There
were many Humes in Virginia living  in  Greene, Rockbridge, Henrico, Ohio, Nicholas, Augusta, Rockingham
and Orange Counties, and it is hard to identify individuals and families.   Below is a selected list of Humes.

1810        HUMES THOMAS          Richmond

Are the two Thomas Humes above father and son?   They appear to be in the same
household.  One of them might be  Thomas Humes  --born ca 1770--   the son of
John Humes Sr. and  brother of John Jr.   He was the father of the Mary Humes
(born in 1810)  who married Joseph  Caruthers.   (see Humes Report)

1830        HUMES HARVIE     Henricounty Co       VA 307      No Township Listed

1830        HUMES JOHN        Henricounty County                    No Township Listed

I believe this is  John Humes, Jr. In 1830 he was married to Margaret Purse.
Note the Index #s for him and Harvie.  They are  living very near each other,
but I have no records of a Harvey Humes.  Can you help?

When Smyth County, Va. was formed in 1832,  William Humes, his father John Humes, Jr.
and their families were already living in the area.

1860        HUMES THOMAS J. Henricounty Co     VA 310 2 W. Richmond

The Humes listed from the 1850 and 1860 Census are not necessarily from my family
of Humes, but are included here because of their proximity to known family locations.

                                                   Missouri Census, 1840 -70

On  January 10,1840,  John Humes, Jr.and his son William are in Missouri, where they received
a patent
for 95.4 acres of land in Miller County, which they purchased jointly from the US land
 office in Fayette, MO.
(see below)  It's interesting to note that the Humes children all gave Virginia
as their place of birth, but in most census records, many are reported as born in Missouri.

The only Hume (without the "s" ) in the records of land patents in MO. that I can positively
identify as part of this family is Eliza Stuart Gilmore,  William's widow.  While others in the
family seem to use either Hume or Humes,  Eliza is consistantly a Hume.  Because she was
literate, it was apparently her choice, rather than a mis-spelling by clerks.
