THOMAS BEGGS, son of Alexander, b.
__; d. early in 1840 in Rockbridge County, Va. Married on April 14,
1786 to Ann Whitley, the daughter of Paul and Jane Whitley. The 1840
census for Rockbridge County, which recorded only the head of household
and age distribution of occupants, included, “Ann Baggs,
[age] 70-80, one male, 15-20, and one female, 10-15. The names of his
children were obtained from his will, which was proved on Febr. 3,
1840. The will also mentioned “grandson William Beggs living
with me.” Children: i. James Beggs, b. __. Married on Febr. 28, 1829 to Patsy Shaner. ii. Samuel Beggs, b. __; d. Aug. 11, 1845 in Jackson Township, Decatur, Indiana. Married on Nov. 9, 1820 in Rockbridge Co., to Elizabeth Carper, daughter of Jacob Carper. Many of their children at one time variously lived in Decatur Co.,Indiana and Wapello Co., Iowa, before dispersing to Missouri and Kansas. iii. John Beggs. iv. Elihu W. Beggs. Married on June 22, 1832 by Rev. John Ewing in the Falling Spring Presbyterian Church in Rockbridge Co., to Mary Crawford. They moved ca. 1849 to New Orleans, where he was involved with shipbuilding. v. Elizabeth Beggs, by May 1795 in Rockbridge Co., Va.; d. Nov. 1851 in Shelby, Missouri. Married by Rev. Houston on April 13, 1815 in Rockbridge to Frederick Painter, Jr. vi. Jane Beggs. Married by Rev, Houston on Dec. 6, 1814 to John McClung. vii. Ann Beggs. Married by Rev. William Cunningham on Jan. 12, 1836 to Archibald Pendall. James McConnell. She was the daughter of James and Jean Anderson, on 8 Feb 1787 in Rockbridge, VA. James and Janet moved to Montgomery Co. Ohio sometime before 1801. Children: i. She died on 24 Dec 1818 in Bristol, Washington Co., Virginia. She married Jacob Susong on 17 Mar 1792 in Rockbridge Co. He was born before 18 Oct 1767 in Alsace-Lorraine, France, and died on 18 Oct 1831 in Bristol, Washington County, Virginia. Both Jacob and "Peggy" were buried in Susong Cemetery, in Bristol, VA. He was the son of John and Jane Beggs Poage, and may have been Martha's first cousin. Jonathan was born on 4 July 1754 and died 10 July 1802. They remained in Rockbridge County, VA. The Rockbridge Marriage Records recorded her petition to the county for a license, which was witnessed by her brother Thomas Beggs. I

A few months later Samuel then married, on Aug. 7, 1838 near Greensburg, Decatur Co., Indiana, Nancy Massie Spilman, b. Febr. 10, 1822 in Campbell Co., Ky; d. 1894, daughter of James and Mary Spilman. Samuel and Nancy moved from Decatur Co. around 1855 to Iowa. In the 1880 census they were in Liberty Township, Marion Co., Iowa. They eventually moved to Ottumwa, Coffey County, Kansas. Samuel was a farmer. v. Mordecai Cross, b. May 3, 1820 in Rockbridge Co., Virginia; d. Aug. 8, 1894 in Seward Co., Ne. Married May 1, 1844 in Des Moines, Iowa to Susannah Walker, b. Mar. 23, 1824 in Dearborn Co., IN. d.
