Jeremiah Odle's Disappearing Family

"Where Did They All Go?"

Jeremiah was one of many Odle's by that name. It seems most probable that his parents were Enoch Odle and Catherine Pryor. According to the 1879 History of Macoupin County (page 136), he settled at Bird, Macoupin Co., IL about 1834, along with Isaac Moore, Mace Moore & John Smith. His family appears with him in the 1840 census for Macoupin Co., IL (page 57) and again in the August 1850 census for Macoupin Co, IL (page 180). It is possible that either he or Sarah Smith were previously married because the oldest son, James, was born in 1835 and Jeremiah and Sarah were married at the end of 1837.

Jeremiah does not appear in the 1860 census with the rest of his family. According to a newspaper account, he lost part of an ear in a fight with someone in 1855 and promptly left the area, presumably in fear for his life. But, where did he go? After 1860, the whole family seems to disappear, except for Isaac. (See census link below.) Did they join Enoch's other offspring in Missouri? No one seems to know.
