Comments written in brown text
are my own; those written in blue are quotes
from the New Living Translation of the Bible.
The name "Cain" (kay-in) sounds similar to the Hebrew word for "bring forth" or "acquire" (kay-nah). Adam and Eve "brought forth" or "acquired" their first son. Cain later murdered his younger brother Abel in a fit of jealousy. (Genesis 4:8) Ironically, the name Cain is also related to the word for "strike" and "spear."
In a way reminiscent of when his parents were banished from Eden years earlier for their sin, God banished Cain from his land for his crime (Cain was a farmer). Cain went to settle in a place called Nod, east of Eden. It may not have been a specific place so much as a condition of life, since the word "Nod" means "wander."
He later built a city (the first one recorded in the Bible), and called it Enoch, after his son.
In the list of Cain's descendants below "ben" is the standard Hebrew way of saying "descendant of."

Enoch means "to discipline; to train up, to initiate." In other words, Cain wanted Enoch to be raised to be like him. Considering Cain's history, this was unfortunate to say the least. Seth also had a descendant named Enoch, who was trained in quite a different way.

Lamech is the first man recorded as having two wives. This is another sign of the downward spiral of humankind, especially as seen in the line of Cain.
Lamech said to his wives,
Adah and Zillah, "listen to me;
wives of Lamech, hear my words.
I have killed a man for wounding me,
a young man for injuring me.
If Cain is avenged seven times,
then Lamech seventy-seven times." (Genesis
4:23-24)
It seems that Lamech thought a lot of himself . . . and very little of others.

This is the first time a sister is specifically
mentioned in any recorded family. Her name means "pleasantness." It is
likely that she is mentioned because pleasantness had been in very short
supply in the line of Cain.
