The Ellis Island Library is located on Ellis Island and is available to the public upon request. The have a selection of reading materials pertaining to Liberty and Ellis Islands. They do not have any passenger arrival records in the Library. However, some passenger arrival information for a range of years are available on computer (see below). And, of course, all extant passenger arrival records are available from NARA, as well as many major libraries, and from the LDS Family History Centers around the country and the world.
In late April 2001, the long-awaited database of Ellis Island immigration records became available both in the museum on computers set up for public use as well as on-line on the Internet for use anywhere by anyone at anytime of the day or night at http://www.ellisislandrecords.org/. Reportedly, a nominal fee will be requested for downloading any images of manifests and it is expected that the fees collected will be used towards the restoration of the Dormitory and Dining Room building which is currently located behind the large hall on Island 1 of Ellis Island.
Many who use the Ellis Island database (EIDB) find its search engine to be cumbersome. However, Steve Morse developed a more versatile search engine which can be found at: http://www.stevemorse.org/.
