Alfred CROSS was born 8 FEB 1812, and died 30 JAN 1875 in Unknown. He married Nancy DOCKSTADER. She was born 30 APR 1812 in Unknown, and died 14 MAY 1886 in Unknown.

Name

An old letter written by a descendant of Alfred and Nancy Cross had stated that Nancy was a Dockstader.  I have assumed over the years that Nancy's last name was Dockstader because of this.  Doing a search on ancestry.com I  found a Nancy who was born on April 30, 1812 to Abraham J. Birth

An old letter from a descendant of Alfred's stated that Alfred was born in Glasgow, Scotland.  All of the censuses seem to indicate that Alfred was born in New York State.  The source for their birth dates was the old family Bible.

1840 United States Federal Census

The 1840 Federal census for Root, Montgomery, New York shows the "Alford" Cross household as having 1 free white male under 5, 1 from 20 to 30, 1 free white female under 5, and 1 from 20 to 30 for a total of 4 persons with 1 person working in agriculture. The male from 20 to 30 would be Alfred Cross and the female from 20 to 30 would be his wife Nancy. The male under 5 would be their son John and the female under 5 would their daughter Mary Margaret.

1850 United States Federal Census

The 1850 Federal census for Mohawk, Montgomery, New York has the Alfred Cross household listed as being the 507th dwelling and the 539th family visited. Listed on lines 32 through 36 are Alfred Cross, age 39, a laborer, Nancy Cross, age 38, Mary M. Cross age 14 who attended school within the year, Charles Cross, age 7, who attended school within the year and Lucinda Cross, age 1. All were listed as having been born in New York.

The 1860 Federal census for Mohawk, Montgomery, New York has the "Alford" Cross household listed as being the 989th dwelling and 1047th family visited. Listed on lines 11 through 13 are "Alford" Cross, age 49 a laborer, Nancy Cross, age 48 and Charles Cross, age 16, who attended school within the year. All were listed as having been born in New York.

1870 United States Federal Census

The 1870 Federal census for Mohawk, Montgomery, New York has the Alfred Cross household listed as being the 397th dwelling and the 443rd family visited. Listed on lines 34 through 36 are Alfred Cross, age 58, a white male with $200 worth of personal property, Nancy Cross, age 58, a white female who cannot write, Robert Cross, age 25, a white male who was married in Jan. of this year. All were listed as having been born in New York and Alfred and Robert were listed as being male citizens of the U.S., 21 years of age and upwards. I don't know who Robert Cross is at this time. He is not listed in the family Bible which makes me think he probably is not Alfred and Nancy's son. Interestingly, Alfred and Nancy did have a son Charles Wesley who was married in January of this year. Perhaps Robert is really Charles? Although Charles would have been 26 and not 25 on his last birthday. It will be interesting to see if I am able to find Charles and his bride Nancy Snell Cross in the 1870 census or if I find Nancy living with her parents. Perhaps there was trouble in paradise? The other interesting thing is nobody in the household had an occupation listed. Was this an oversight or were they not working?

1880 United States Federal Census

Alfred passed away in 1875 so he wouldn't be in this census, but Nancy didn't pass away until 1886 so she should be in the 1880 census somewhere but I have yet to locate her.
