The Bauman Family of Puslinch and area

|
Descendants of Susanna Bauman and Johann Schmidt sources at bottom On the 1851 census for Puslinch Susanna Schmidt (Bauman) states that she is 30 years old and that her birthplace was the United States. Her brother Joseph who married Fanny (Veronica) Steffler was born about a year before her and his birthplace, as stated on his death certificate, was Ohio U.S.A. Perhaps Susanna was also born in Ohio. COUNTY OF WELLINGTON -GUELPH MERCURY-Feb. 20, 1907-- By W.F. MacKenzie-(Puslinch) Andrew Steffler, a German, settled on lot 26, rear of 7. It is now the property of John Smith, junior, whose father was the pioneer settler on lot 29, front of 7, (map) now owned by Mrs. Matthew Fahrner. Johannes Schmidt (John Smith) lived on the front half of lot 29 in the seventh concession of Puslinch from 1838 until at least 1865. His marriage to Susanna Bauman occurred around 1836 as the birth of their first child was in 1837. This marriage record along with the baptisms of some of their children could very well be lost in the fire that occured in the Guelph Catholic church in 1844. The Schmidts, Steffler's, Hennhoffer's and the Bauman's were all neighbours on the seventh concession of Puslinch. In a letter dated Jan. 2, 1847, Gideon Ochs and Joseph Bauman (Sr.) appear before William Leslie, the Justice of the Peace for Puslinch, and both sign a sworn letter that state they are personally acquainted with Joannes Schmidt and that he has occupied lot 29 since the spring of 1838 and that he has a house and about 30 acres cleared. John is crowned Lot 29 on May 14, 1856, the same day that Joseph Bauman Jr. is crowned lot 28. Although all of John and Susanna's children were baptized in the Catholic religion, on the census's, John states his religion to be Lutheran. John and Susanna's son Joseph is a witness to the marriage of Joseph Bowman to Catherine Fetter in 1870 in Puslinch. According to the Puslinch land records, John's son Moses is married in 1865, as he and his wife take out a mortgage on his father's property. Gideon Ochs Jr. also seems to be involved with the property for a time. The families that were connected to the Bauman's directly, or through marriage, stuck together during the early days in Puslinch as the paper trail that they left behind indicates. 1851 Puslinch Census
Children of SUSANNA BAUMAN and JOHANNES SCHMIDT are: i.CAROLINA9 SCHMIDT, b. March 02, 1837, Puslinch, Ontario, Canada; m. JOSEPH HAUSER2, November 11, 1850, New Germany, Ontario2. Notes for CAROLINA

were Egidius Ochs and Sabina Ochs. The marriage of Carolina
Schmidt to Joseph Hauser sates that Joseph Hauser Sr. was from Speichinam in
Wuertenberg. A connection hasn't been made yet, but there was and still is a
Hauser family in Preston. Notes for JOSEPH HAUSER: GUELPH MERCURY-THURS.MAY2, 1850 Attempted Murder-On the day of our last publication the life of another fellow being was placed in the greatest jeopardy under most singular circumstances. It appears that on thursday last George and Joseph Hauser, cousins, and natives of Germany, were passing along the Brock Road, 10 miles below Guelph, when the former exibited signs of great excitement, and occasionally fell on his knees in the attitude of prayer, whilst joseph was endeavoring to take him home. Eventually George attacked his companion with a large clasp knife and cut him in a most frightful and dangerous manner,-so much so, as to endanger his life. After committing the deed the man ran off, but was taken in about an hour afterwards, and on examination before W. Leslie and C. Mickle, esqrs., was committed to Guelph jail to take his trial at the coming Assizes.
In noticing the above case we have been as concise
as possible. The Assizes will commence on the 14th inst., when we shall be
careful to give full reports of the trials, and our readers will then receive
their information guaranteed by oaths. 1851 Puslinch Census
