Descendents of Barbara and Nicholas Schantz The Baumans of Puslinch
Barbara Bauman
Barbara
was born June 17, 1831 in Waterloo Township, Ontario, Canada, and died April 22,
1915 in Milwaukee, Wis..
She married NICHOLAS SCHANTZ Abt. 1849, son of JOHN SCHANTZ and ANNA
GERLACH. He
was born Abt. 1820 in Trulben, Rhein Province, Alsace, and died July 21, 1886 in
Slinger, Wisconsin. John
Vonhaden has supplied me with the information on both the Schantz and Ochs
families in Wisconsin and abroad. He still resides in Wisconsin. Without John I
would not have this information on these families that left Canada to go to the
United States.
Barbara's obituary says she was born in Galt. Although possible, it was
more than likely she was born on Lot#13 Concession 1 of Beasley's Lower Block in
Waterloo Township. This baptismal record shows Lawrence Hicker__?? and Maria
Theresa Stitson as sponsors. From other evidence, I believe it was meant to read
Lawrence Heckendorn. At the time, Maria Theresa Stitson was living on the Snyder
property which is just down the road from Lot #13 Concession 1 where Joseph and
Josephine were living. She is as far as I can tell, by herself, and the only
other Catholic in the immediate area.
Barbara left Puslinch with Gideon and Elizabeth (Bauman) Ochs in about
1849 and resided in Tonawanda New York for about 5 years. It was there that she
married Nicholas Schantz. It is very likely that Barbara met Nicholas here in
Canada.
In
1847 Nicholas appears as a sponsor to the baptism of Magdalena Dopp born to
Joseph Dopp and Mary Ann Roth., in the Waterloo area. His sister Agatha, is
married to John Dopp, and comes to the U.S. in the 1850's. Both Nicholas and his
wife, and his sister Agatha and her |
