Subject: Meadows/Steele - My grandfather John B. Meadows was the son of Ralph Steele and Eliza Meadows, she was the daughter of John and Nancy Thacker Spouce Meadows. Edith Jane Meadows, who was the 2nd wife of George Steele was Eliza's sister. Ralph b. 5/20/1857 and Ann Duty Steele's sons that I know of were Hugh and Ewen. They were Grandfather John's half brothers. He had another half brother named Wayne Curry I think.Eliza and Edith's Grandfather was Jacob and Hannah Meadows. Uncle Ewen died a couple years ago. He lived at Henlawson,WV. He had a lot of children. I know a few of them. Hugh lived at Switzer,WV in a beautiful log cabin. They had a sister Named Ann Steele. My Grandfather was going to marry her and that is when they told him that he was a Steele and she was his half sister. Uncle Ewen said that when Eliza and Edith's father (John) died, he was in Boone county and Ralph Steele went after him with a horse and wagon and when they got home which was on a hill, the casket slide off the wagon as they were going up and John slide all the way to the bottom. I have a lot of birth records and marriage records. Ralph Steele b.9/11/1801, in Tazewell county VA. d. 1886 Logan Co, His Father George m.Rosanna Fannin d. David and Jane Lockhart.

Response - Hi Terry, If you'll check the Descendant's List for George Steele (1827-1897), you'll notice that the eldest child of George and his first wife, Sarah Ellis, is Thomas Leftridge Steele, who was married to Minnie (Minerva) Adell Totten. Thomas and Minnie had about 15 children. Unfortunately, I have put the wrong date of death for Thomas, and I'll correct that. The correct birth and death dates for them are Thomas (3/21/1847 - 12/16/1936) and Minnie (9/13/1854 - 7/3/1942) according to their gravestones. They are buried in the Steele Cemetery at Switzer, W.Va. (just outside Logan on Island Creek), as is his mother, Sarah, and many of his siblings. I visited there last summer and the cemetery is badly overgrown, but I plan to talk to some of the Steeles in the area in hopes of getting that remedied.
Thomas's father (my great grandfather), George, is buried in Culloden, W.Va. with his second wife (and my great grandmother), Edith Jane Meadows. I live about 20 miles from Culloden and visit quite often, as my parents and grandparents are also buried there.
You might like to know the inscription on Thomas's tombstone is, "An honest man is the noblest work of God," and Minnie's is, "A tender mother and faithful friend."
I hope this has helped. If I can help further, please drop me an email.
