SUSAN ANN SHORT
AND
JOHN SINGLETON MORGAN

Tennessee, Virginia and Kentucky

Susan Ann Short

Susan Short was born in Virginia on September 23, 1886.  Her parents were William J. Short, Jr. and Ellendor Rachel Harris.  Susan married Burgan Brown in 1909 in Middlesboro, (Bell Co.) Kentucky.   To this union 2 children were born.   Gladys Jean Brown was born February 4, 1910 in Middlesboro, Kentucky and Myrtle Brown on February 11, 1913, also in Middlesboro, Kentucky.   Susan and Burgan was only married for several years.   Burgan had left Susan with two small children and were gone for many months.   Susan went to work in a canary for 25 cents a day to feed the chldren.   Then one day just out of the blue, Burgan showed back up.   They divorced and she remarried to John Singleton Morgan.   The children born to this union along with the two children of Burgan Brown's are listed below.

    Gladys Jean Brown
    Mrytle Brown
    William Abraham Morgan
    William Henry Morgan
    Lucy Cloteene Morgan
    Hazel Jewel Opal Lee Singleton
    Charles Bobby Gene (Bob) Singleton

Susan and John lived their early married life in Harlan, Kentucky, (Harlan County) and Jonesville, Virginia (Lee County).   Susan and John later separated, but to our knowledge they never attained a divorce.   They both continued to live around Jonesville.   She lived with her son, William Henry.   Later in life, she became crippled with arthritis, and her son, William Henry provided care to his mother.   In the early 60's she came to live with her daughter, Lucy Cloteene and family in Medford.

About 1 year before she died, she went to Americus, Georgia to stay with another daughter, Hazel Jewel Opal Lee Daugherty.   Cloteene became so sick she could not care for her.   In July 1970 she had a stroke and died in Americus, Georgia.   Lucy Cloteene's husband, William (Bill) Pruitt had Cox's Funeral Home in Lake City, Tennessee to go to Georgia and bring the body back for burial.   She was brought to Cloteene and Bill's home in Medford for viewing of the body.   On July 8th she was laid to rest in Leach Cemetery in Lake City, Tennessee.

John Singleton Morgan

John Singleton Morgan was born on February 14, 1878 in Tennessee.   His parents were John Singleton and Matildia Lawson.   Before John was born, his father was killed and Matildia remarried to John Morgan.   So he was named using both last names.   This has caused a lot of confusion in tracing this family.   When John S. Morgan and Susan A. Short had children, they named the children Singleton and Morgan's.   Every other child was given a different last name.   So you can why our THREADS OF TIME are never ending!

John worked in the coal mines in his early life.   Several months before he died when he became sick, Susan had their son, William Henry to go and bring his father back to their home so she could care for him.   He died on August 14, 1962 in Jonesville, Virginia (Lee County).   He was laid to rest in the Silver Leaf Cemetery in Rosehill, Virginia.
