Biography of Alfred P. SURATT

Alfred P. SURRATT was born in Carroll County, September 27, 1867, a son of Isham and Eva Susan (Marshall) SURRATT. He married Mary Ellen OGLE August 1, 1888. She was bom in Carroll County July 14,1868, a daughter of Thomas and Dcida Jane (White) OGLE.
Between the late 1880's and early 1920's, while they lived at Littlevine, Mr. SURRATT, worked at several trades. In addition to fanning, he had a blacksmith shop, a saw mill, and operated a grist mill, (powered by a "galloway gas engine.") He repaired steam engines, steam tractors and saw mills.
As a wheel wright and wood worker, he made and repaired wagons, buggies, carriages and made coffins. His wife usually helped him line the coffins.
Mr. SURRATT also pulled teeth for people through-out the country. People often came to his home during the night with a toothache, and the tooth would have to be pulled by "oil lamp" light, with tooth pullers he made himself. (No charge was ever made for these services).
In the early 1920's. Mr. and Mrs. SURRATT moved to Sylvatus, where he built and ran a garage under the name of "A. P. SURRATT and Sons." In addition to running the garage, blacksmith shop and making coffins, he continued some of the other trades practiced at Littlevine.
At Sylvatus, he started making furniture, doing beautifully designed inlay work on many of these items. Some of the walking and folding canes, he carved with latticed pistol grips. As a gunsmith, he made gun stocks and repaired guns. During the late 1930*s, he made a few replicas of "old time" larger wagons.
As "souvenirs", for members of his family, Mr.SURRATT made miniature cedar chests and other small items; also carved wooden miniature animals, mostly "deers'and horses." These items were excellent examples of "Primitive Art."
They were a kind and understanding father and mother to their 12 childccn, greatly loved and admired by their 34 grandchildren and their many great-grandchildren.
Four of their children arc living;
Ruth Gray, who is 94yrs;
Naomi Owen,
Manota Belcher
Buford SURRATT, all in their 80's.
Mr. and Mrs. SURRATT lived out their lives at their home in Sylvatus, in the house set back a little distance behind his garage building. This house is still standing and from the outside, looks much as it did then. A larger "garage and apartment building" was later built by his son, J. B. SURRATT, replacing the old garage building (located near the Sylvatus Ruritan Club building).
Alfred P. SURRATT died August 15,1953, at the age of 85 years, 11 months. Mary Ellen SURRATT, his wife, died September 30, 1954, at the age of 86 years, 2 months. They were buried at the "Ogle Cemetery" at Littlevine.

Sylvatus Country Doctor

Dr. Webb SURRATT, M.D., was a country physician in Sylvatus from the year 1898-1918. Isaac Webb SURRATT was bom in 1874, a son of Isham and Eva Susan SURRATT.
He received his degree in medicine from the Medical College, Richmond, Va., then set-up his practice from his parents' home in Sylvatus, for a short time. They lived, at that time, at their farm below the "Eagle Falls."
Dr. SURRATT later bought the property across the highway from what is now "Conrad's Service and Grocery." The house and separate store building, used also for his office, stood on practically the same locations as the newer house and store building built by Mr. and Mrs. Chas. D. Lindsey.
In addition to his office patients. Dr. SURRATT made calls to homes throughout the county, delivering babies and ministering to the sick. He traveled by horseback, day or night, if needed, over rough roads and through all kinds of weather. In fact, he was a typical "Country Doctor" in the early years.
One December day in 1912, Dr. SURRATT rode his "trusty" horse, with his saddle bags attached, to a home at "Mitchell's Crossroads" to deliver a 12 lb. baby girl, who would in later years, become the wife of Dr. Surratfs nephew. The baby girl was Glady Marshall, now the wife of Buford SURRATT.
Dr. Webb SURRATT had three sons: two by his first, wife, Adina Gardner, and one son by his last wife, Edna Gordon.
In 1918, he sold his property in Sylvatus to Mr. and Mrs. S. T. Marshall (his office and store building burned down prior to this date). He moved to Bel Springs, [Pulaski Co.] Va., where he continued to practice medicine until his death in 1926.
