|Emancipation Proclamation, 06th Dec 1865||Amendment XIII in the National Archives The Thirteenth Amendment to the United States Constitution officially abolished and continues to prohibit slavery and involuntary servitude, except as punishment for a crime. It was passed by the Senate on April 8, 1864, passed by the House on January 21, 1865, and adopted on December 6, 1865. It was then declared in the proclamation of Secretary of State William H. Seward on December 18. It was the first of the Reconstruction Amendments.||Business was pretty much normal at the SURRATT Plantation, after the 13th Amendment passed. Riley T. Sr. SURRATT, had to free his slaves and pay them for their labor service. He also started to charge them rent at the slave quarters, & charged them for their food. So at the end he was having the "Free Men" endebted to him at the end of the month.|

Riley T. SURRATT, larger Plantion Owner|
per "Interview with Spence JOHNSON, March 12, 1938"
Dr. J. D. Lovelace, Fernhome, Waco, Texas
by: Miss Effie Cowan, P.W. McLennan County, Texas Dist. #8
Spence JOHNSON was born free, in the 1850's and a member of the
Choctaw Nation, in the Indian Territory, [present-day Oklahoma]
He does not know his exact age. [1.] He and his mother were stolen and sold at auction in Shreveport to
Riley SURRATT, who lived near Shreveport, on the Texas - Louisiana line.
He has lived in Waco since 1874.
About 1861, [when he was 3yrs] his family was kidnaped by slave dealers, from the Indian Reservation [a.k.a. Indian Territory, West] in present-day Oklahoma. The Slave Dealers took them to the Slave Auction at Shreveport, Caddo Co., Louisiana caled "Beggy Depot" His Mother[2.] her three children brought $3,000 by Mr. Riley SURRATT. He was the Father of Judge Marshall SURRATT, later a Judge her in Waco, TX.
Mr. Riley SURRATT had a big plantation, don't know how many acres, but their was a factory and gins and big houses and lots of nigger quarters. The house was right on the Tex-Louisan line. My Mother cooked for 'em. When Mr. Riley bought her, she couldn't speak nothing but the Choctaw words. I was a baby when we left the Choctaw country. My sister looked like a full blood Choctaw Indian and she could pass for a real full-blood Indian. My Mother's folks was all Choctaw Indians. Her sisters was Pelly HOGAN, and Sookey HOGAN and she had a brother, Helan TUBBY. They were well known in the Indian Territory in the old's days. Near as Mr. Riley's books show, I must of been born around 1859, up in the Indian Territory.
We would work with the Hay Press to bale cotton, on the Plantation and took cotton by ox wagons to Shreveport, LA. Seven or eight wagons in a train. With three or four yoke of steers to each wagon. We made lasses and cloth and shoes and lots of things. Old Mr. Riley had a nigger who could make shoes and if he had to go to court in Carthage, (County Seat) he have a nigger make shoes for him.
The Slave quarters was a quarter mile long, all strung out on the creek bank. Our cabin was next to the big house. The white folks give big balls and had supper going all night. We had lots to eat and they let us have dances and suppers, too. We never go anywhere. My Mother was always cry and 'fraid of bein' stolen again.
My Mother and I stayed on with Mr. Riley after Freedom War (Civil War 1861 to 1865) and till I was about sixteen.[3.] When Mr. Riley died[4.] and I came to Waco, TX. in a wagon with Judge SURRATT's brother, Mr. Taylor SURRATT.[5.] I come to Waco the same year Dr. LEVELACE did, and he says that it was 1874.[6.] I married and we had 6 Children
