The most beautiful side of his nature was shown in his home, in relation to his mother as long as she lived, to his wife, and to his Children. His life was a benediction to the world, and will remain in isnpiration to those who knew him well. He had been faithful member of the Methodist Church for many years, and discharged with fidelity his duties as a Christian. He was universally loved and respected by his friends, and they are all saddened by his going.
A true and tried soldier and patriot has passed to his reward. His badge of honor as a Confederate soldier rests upon his bosom as he sleeps in Cleburne Cemetery awaiting the last bugle call.

 Martha Washington College, Abingdon, Virginia
By 1800, Abingdon was a well-established population center of Southwest Virginia, and this was the Abingdon that attracted Francis Preston in 1830. It was in this year that he began building on his mansion-like home, now known as the Martha Washington Inn. In 1858 the Preston home was purchased by the Martha Washington College for Women. The first session of classes held there ran from March to July 1860. The College struggled throughout and after the Civil War and closed permanently in 1931, due to the effects of the Depression on the region. The Inn, as it appears today, was restored in 1984 after a long career housing Barter Theatre actors and functioning as an inn. It is surrounded by stories and legends, such as the horse who lost its Union rider to a Rebel bullet, and still roams the grounds on moon-lit nights; a beautiful student whose sweet violin melodies played for a dying soldier can still be heard; and the reappearing stain made by blood shed by a Confederate soldier.  Paul, I was looking at your web site at:
  ../../tx/johnson/fgsBAIRD.htm#7.1
As I have been doing research on the MOORING line for my grandson (Liam Mooring), I am having some questions on Eugenia Bert Mooring. Part of the problem is the similar names of Eugenia’s parents and grandparents plus some different initials in the US Census.
I believe Eugenia is the daughter of John Cullen Mooring and Eliza Jane Christian and her grandparents are John Mooring and Eliza D Colby. I believe your web page should show:
(1st Dau of John Cullen MOORING & Mother: Eliza Jane Christian)
(Grandau of John & Elizabeth Colby MOORING. of Madison Co., TN.)
I based my conclusions on the following records. I would interested in your thoughts.
