   Wm. M. INGLE's Bible gives his birth year as 1835, 
   but Census records are consistant with 1839.

One Sunday afternoon, several years ago, Ron Teague, Max and Shirley 
Baker were visiting Aunt Celie (William Alexander's sister) and she 
told us about Papaw Ingle (William M. INGLE) joining the Union Army. 
The neighborhood, she said, was divided between southern and northern 
loyalities. A southern neighbor felt no remorse about shooting or 
turning in his northern sympathetic neighbor. Grandma and Grandpa 
Ingle had worked out a code that if the clothes were hung out on 
bushes near the house, it was safe for him to come in; if there 
were no clothes hanging out, the house was being watched by the rebels-
-stay away. [REF:#001]

Aunt Celia said that one evening after a visit with their families, 
Grandpa and two of his friends were headed back to their camp when 
they were captured by the Rebs. Their horses and guns were taken from 
them. They were told they had to march to the rebel camp where they 
would be sent to a POW camp. Grandpa was quite familiar with the area 
where they were marching and knew that there was no way that the Rebs 
could be camped where they said they were. As they were marched further 
up the mountain, it dawned on him that the Rebs were planning to kill 
them. He managed to tell his buddies what he thought was about to 
happen and he wanted to try to get away. There was a curve on the road 
that was bordered by a deep ravine. When they reached this point, 
they decided they would make a break to get away and they would go 
in different directions then meet up later. The Rebs recaptured the 
other two men but Grandpa Ingle got away. He watched them hang them. 
He believed that it been the intention of the Rebel soldiers all along 
to hang them. [REF:#001]


He was appointed guardian over Sallie and Harrison TEAGUE's children 
in 1891 after they had both died. He and Jane lived to be 73 and both 
died in 1917. I have copies of the children and some dates on his 
siblings from copies from his Bible. [REF:#001]

He was with his parents in Cocke Co., TN in 1850 Census. 
1860 Sevier Co., TN with his parents age 19. Listed as a farmhand. 
He was in Sevier Co., TN Census 1870, 1880, and 1900. [REF:#001]
