Father-In-Law dies, Spring of 1802
Right after the new year of 1802, F-I-L SAMUEL McMURRY, perhaps thinking
about the death of his old friend JOSEPH,3 SARRATT, wrote his
will on 09 Jan. 1802. He died that Spring and his Will was proved
in the June Court, 1802. He provided that his daughter
Mary (McMURRY) SARRETT, (age 37) wife of JOHN,3 SARRETT,
should have one Negro boy called ABE (Who was already in the
possession of John Sarrett) and a Negro girl named RACHEL.
Two DOUGLASS men witnessed the Will they were all neighbors on
the South Hico River and some of the DOUGLASS family continued
to be neighbors in Tennessee. [REF: #90, pg149]
John SARRETT sells Property March 1802
On March of 1802, JOHN,3 SARRETT, sold 102 acres of property in
Persons Co., NC. to WILLIAM COCKE, for 61 Pounds and 10 Shillings of "Virginia Currency",
with generous terms of both wills (a grown Negro Male was worth
somewhere around $1,000 on the market and Females were also valuable)
John probably decided it was time to move.
[REF: #90, pg149]
John SARRETT moves to Tennessee
It's not known why JOHN,3 & Mary (McMURRY) SARRETT
and family decided to leave, the North Carolina area where he was
born and raised, all his children were born. More likely with the
death of his father and father-in-law, he decided to move in company
with some of his friends in Person County, NC. to Smith Co., Tenn.
[REF: #90, pg149]
Most moves in the early days were made this way,
so at 42 years of age, he was prompted to follow his brother
SAMUEL,3 SARRATT to Tennessee...prs
On JOHN,3 SARRETT, Pension Application, he stated "he first
went to Smith Co., Tenn., then to Rutherford Co., Davidson Co., and
finally Humphreys County Tennessee. At the time of his Pension Application
