Family tradition is that [REF:#1.41] JAMES (John) ATCHLEY was the 
progenitor of this ATCHLEY family who came to the Colony of 
Virginia from England. He was listed on the Passanger & 
Immigration List "ATCHLEY, John n.a.; (Occupation) Virginia,  
1666 *8715 pg9 [See Immigration to America Appearing in English 
Records, By Frank SMITH; Everton Pulb. Inc. Logan Utah, 1976] 
The dates of his birth and death are Unknown at this time. He came to 
the "New World", in 1666 and  [REF:#1.4, 50] later settled in 
Pennsylvania. The name of JAMES (John) ATCHLEY's wife is Unknown. 
All the children born to this union is Unknown. As per [REF:#1.6 pg1]  
Maud Horn contens to list three sons of JAMES (John) ATCHLEY and 
Wife Unknown: 
   1.1 Son: JOSHUA ATCHLEY;      b. 1728? m. Mary MARTIN, Ch.
   1.2 Son: THOMAS ATCHLEY;      b. 1730? Not Traced!
   1.3 Son: NATHANIEL ATCHLEY;   b. 1732? Not Traced!

Very little in known about the two sons 1.2 THOMAS and 1.3 NATHANIEL 
ATCHLEY. the following is the lineage of 1.1 JOSHUA ATCHLEY

[based on birth of 1st child] to [REF:#1.4]

She was the daughter of Unknown Parents; 
It has been [REF:#1.5 & 50] reported that their were Six 
children all born in New Brunswick, New Jersey to this union:

   1.1.6. 5th. Son: ABRAHAM ATCHLEY;  b. 25 Oct. 1759

NOTE: Dau 1.1.1 MARY is listed as being born 1747, the next child 
Son THOMAS ATCHLEY  birth was some eight years later. Based on Son 
1.1.6. ABRAHAM  birth of 1759, this would mean DANIEL, JOSEPH and 
MARTIN would half to be born one year apart, unless they were twins 
or triplets?...prs.

JOSHUA and MARY (MARTIN) ATCHLEY migrated with their family from near 
"New Brunswick", Middlesex County, New Jersey to Loudoun County, 
Virginia, after 1759 (Son 1.1.6 Abraham Atchley was born in "Princeton", 
New Jersey.) 1.1 JOSHUA ATCHLEY  was of the Baptist faith, as were 
all his sons except Son 1.1.4 JOSEPH ATCHLEY who was a Methodist. 
1.6 All five of these son are said to have been in the American 
Revolutionary War (1775-1783, 9 years of WAR). Under the command of 
1.7 General GEORGE WASHINGTON. 
(Meaning George Washington was "Commander of ALL Colonist soldiers...prs)

At the start of the War the following would be the ages of the Sons:
   Father JOSHUA, age 46 Yrs.
   THOMAS, age 20 Yrs. 
   (1775 N.J. Militia, 1777 Loudoun Co. Militia, 1781 Botetourt 
   Co., Militia, 1781 Walker Crk. Va. Militia)
   DANIEL, age 19 Yrs.
   JOSEPH, age 18 Yrs.
   MARTIN, age 17 Yrs.
   ABRAHAM, age 16 Yrs.

As per 1.6 Sons 1.2 THOMAS, 1.3 DANIEL and 1.4 JOSEPH ATCHLEY removed 
to (now Sevier Co. area) Tennessee, where THOMAS and DANIEL settled 
on the "South Bank" of the "French Broad River", 1.4 
JOSEPH settled a little father away from the river edge. They were 
all Baptist 1.6 except Son 1.1.4 JOSEPH,  being afraid of water?, 
joined the Methodist Church.

This writer does not understand, did Joseph became a "Methodist" 
because he was afraid of water or did he NOT live on the Alder Branch 
because he was afraid of water?...prs

of age ca1772 (based on birth of 1st. child) in Loudoun Co., VA. 
to JOHN HOLMS; b. about 1730, in County of Coleraine, Ireland; d. 
about 1781 at the age of 51 years, in Frederick Co., VA; Son of 
Unknown Ireland Parents; They had three children born to this 
first marriage; JOHN HOLMES came to America on 08 Jun. 1757, at 
the age of 27 years, he was a Greek Scholar, and taught in the 
Virginia Schools; He was a member of the "Ancient, Free and 
Accepted Masons"; After the Unknown death of her first 
husband MARY (ATCHLEY) HOLMS married a second time at 37 years of 
age ca1784 (based on birth of 1st. child) to 8 years her junior 
ENOCH MUIRHEAD; b. 1755, location Unknown; d. about 1805, at 40 
years of age; Son of Unknown Parents; They had four children born 
to this second marriage:

to a farm near the confluence of "Peake Creek" and the "New 
River", about 80 miles east of Pulaski, VA.

This writers Great-Great-Great-Grandfather THOMAS ATCHLEY was born 
on 1st or 3rd. May 1755, near "New Brunswick" What is Now 
known as Middlesex County, New Jersey; d. 11 Oct. 1836, at the age 
of 80 years, 5 months and 8 days, in Sevier Co. Tenn. He is buried 
in the Adler Branch Cemetery, Sevier County, Tennessee. (North of 
Sevierville off of Hyw 66). THOMAS ATCHLEY  married the young 16 
years of age Miss LYDIA RICHARDS; 
b. 18 Aug. 1762; 
d. 03 Aug. 1850, at the age of 87 years, 11 months and 15 days at 
Sevier Co., Tenn.; She is buried in the Adler Branch Cemetery, Sevier 
Co., Tenn.; She was the daughter of Unknown Parents [the search 
goes on..prs]; They relocated to prsent-day Sevier Co., Tenn. 
prior to 1790  [as per the birth of their 5th child BENJAMIN 
ATCHLEY] THOMAS & LYDIA (RICHARDS) ATCHLEY had 12 children born

TENNESSEE "Occupancy" LAND GRANT: DANIEL ATCHLEY received "Occupancy" Land Grants from the Government in Sevier County, Tenn. Which one of the pre-emption was to have settled in the Sevier Co. area between 1783 and 1790. This DANIEL ATCHLEY would be 31 years younger than our subject, could it be he was a son of DANIEL ATCHLEY, Sr.?..prs In the 1860 Census for Sevier Co., TN. [NARS, 1860-M-653, Reel 1270, Page 093, F.G. 373] H/H DANIEL ATCHLEY age 59, b. 1801, Tenn. Farmer Wife: SARAH (Unknown) ATCHLEY age 70, b. 1790, b. VA. This is the last record found for Daniel & Sarah ATCHLEY, no record of a "Headstone" found in Sevier Co., TN. by this writer. 1.1.4. 3rd. Abraham ATCHLEY, age 61 declares he enlisted for 18 months in Capt. David May's Company. He was discharged in Baititort (sic) County, VA. and he was at the Seiege of York. Wife: Alsey, age 47 Son: John, age 16 Son: Thomas, age 13 Dau: Easther, age 11 Son: James, age 9 Son: William, age 7 Son: George, age 4 13 Aug. 1835 Jackson Co., AL. Abraham ATCHLEY, age 76 petition. Says he enlisted before the battle of Camden under Capt. MADISON (minus details of how they got to the battle too late for action and returned home. E.R.B.) served 1 month. 22 Aug. 1839 Jackson Co., AL. Abraham ATCHLEY, age 78 petition. Declares he was born Oct. 25, 1761, 5 miles from Princeton N.J. moved with his parents to Montgomery Co., Virginia. In the fall of 1771 he volunteered ... and marched against Shanee Indians at Fort Pitt ... across the Allegany Mts. at old battleground (of) General Braddock and went to Fort (Pitt) Enemy had fled so they returned home. He remained in VA. some years and then moved to Sevier County, Tenn. about 1790-91. Had tour of duty again against the Cherokee Indians under Capt. Peter BRYANT in Aug. 1815. He volunteered under Capt. A. LAWSON for Six months. He was discharged March 1816. He lived in Sevier County, Tenn. until 1828 when he moved to Jackson Co., Al. /LS/ Abraham [ X ] ATCHLEY Lived in Virginia until he was 56 years of age (1813), when he removed to Sevier Co. Tenn. He lived there for some 21 years, when he was 77 years of age (1834) he removed to Jackson Co., Alabama. This writer could NOT find ABRAHAM ATCHLEY in 1830 Census or 1837 Tax List, 1840 Census, or 1850 Census for Sevier Co., TN. Need more Information.
