 This Tragic Story!
Carl Melrose SARRATT, died at an early age (39yrs) of "Tuberculosis" on 7th May 1919, at the home in Gaffney, Cherokee Co., SC. Leah Hortense (Cunningham) SARRATT, came down with it on 17 Dec 1919, and was committed to the "State Park Tuberculosis Sanitarium", on Parklane Rd., just North of Columbia, SC. (It's no longer their) She died their 9 months & 1 day later on Sep 18th 1020, and both are buried in the Oakland Cemetery, Limestone Springs, Cherokee Co., SC. but not close together, both has been reported to be buried in "Paupers" graves!.

The "Paupers Grave & No Headstone" Story is NOT True!
per Click on RedBall for More Info. on this Source  REF:#9005.b], Grandson John C. SMILEY, writes: I have visited the Sarratt cemetery plot in Gaffney, SC. It is located in the Limestone section of the town, near Limestone College. I have called it the Limestone Cemetery, but think that Oakland Cemetery is most likely the correct name. They are not buried in pauper's graves, as stated on the website. My Grandfather Carl Melrose, Sr. is buried in the "SARRATT" family plot with his father and many other relatives in the large, perpetual care cemetery. The site is at the top of a small hill and can be located by a Woodsman of the World headstone. [Volney James SARRATT has the WOW Marker see above!..prs]
My Grandmother Hortese (my spelling) is not buried in the same plot, but is about 60 to 80 feet away in a plot with her sister and the sister's "BAGWELL" family members."
On my next trip to Cherokee Co., I will photo-graph these headstones.. John C. SMILEY, Jr.

With both SARRATT & CUNNINGHAM Grandparents deceased and the 3 Aunt/Uncle's on the SARRATT side & the 9 Aunt/Uncle's on the CUNNINGHAM side, not able to or not wanting to take in these children, they became "Wards of the Court".

These children were living with their Uncle, the Cherokee Co. Magistrate Zoriaster Boyd SARRATT, until January, 1920 when they were split up and Earl, age 13, Carl, age 5, 7 Oveda, age 2yrs were placed in the "Economy Home Orphanage" Kings Mountain, York Co., SC. Betty, age 12 Claude, age 11yrs, Idell age 8yrs, and Paul age 5yrs were placed in the "Church Home Orphanage", York, York Co., SC.

Some of these children, never saw each other after the 1920's
Earl A. SARRATT, released from Orphanage in 1926, went to Gray Co., TX., later to Astoria, Queens, NY. married and had 2 children, (a boy & 1 girl) he died age 77yrs in NY.
Alma "Betty" released from Orphanage in 1925, also went to New York, married had 2 sons, died age 81yrs in Danbury, Conn.
Paul Irvin, released from Orphanage in 1927, joined the U.S. Army, later moved to Sacramento, Calif. do not know is he ever married, but he died age 68yrs in Calif.
Claud, released from Orphanage in 1928, moved to New Jersey & New York. He married and has 3 Children (2 Dau's & 1 Son), he died at a early age of 35yrs.
Mary "Idell" SARRATT, released from Orphanage in 1930, married & had 4 Children, died age 92yrs, in Orangeburg, SC.
Carl Melrose, Jr. was released from Orphanage in 1933, married & had 2 Dau's & 1 Son, he died age 68yrs in Tampa, Florida.
Mildred Oveda, was released from Orphanage in 1936, she moved to Astoria, Queens, NY. to be with her older brothers, tragic ending she committed suicide in NY. and left a "Out-of-Wedlock" 18 month old baby.

Church Home Orphanage, York Co., South Carolina
York Place, Church Home Orphanage Entrance Sign - Cick on Thumbnail for Larger Photo! In 1854 the Yorkville Female Academy was established on East Jefferson Street. The next year, Micah Jenkins and Asbury Coward, young Citadel graduates, established the King's Mountain Military Academy. It was closed during the Civil War, during which Jenkins was killed, but Coward returned to Yorkville and reopened the school. The original buildings no longer stand, but it became the site of the Episcopal Church Home for Children, an orphanage located for many years in York, which is today a treatment center for emotionally disturbed children named "York Place".

"York Place Episcopal Church Home" for Children has served children and their families for over 150 years. First established in 1850 in Charleston as an orphanage, the Church Home relocated to York, SC in 1910.
Since that time, it has evolved from an orphanage to become one of the first Residential Treatment Facilities in South Carolina around 1970. "York Place" continues to serve children and adolescents who are "most in need" and without Residential Treatment services, may require psychiatric hospitalization.

[REF:#002] Mrs. Claudette (Sarratt) Tate on 6th Aug 2001 writes: "Unfortunately, Mrs. Alma (Sarratt) Pendergast, died young also?."

Possible Record Problem! #2 Aunt "Betty" (SARRATT) PENDERGAST, death date!
[REF:#005.c] John C. Smiley, Jr. writes on July 22, 2009:" Alma "Betty" Sarratt Pendergast must have died long before the 1988 date indicated. I cannot document this, however, but pass it on for "what it's worth". I do know that she died long before I was married. I was married in 1960. I suspect that it was in the late 1940s or early 1950s. I know that this is not enough information for any official record, but just pass it along. Carletta, Carl Melrose Sarratt, Jr.'s daughter, doesn't remember exactly when either, but said she thought that she (Carletta) as nine or ten years old when it happened. Here again, this is all just memories. C'est la vie."
This death date problem is similar to Mrs. Claudette (Sarratt) Tate above when she state: 'Aunt Betty died Young'
We got the above date of 'Oct 28, 1988' from the Social Security Death Index on line, that has the only:
     'ALMA PENDERGAST b. 15 Mar 1907 d. 28 Oct 1988 Danbury, Fairfield, CT. SSD# 049-16-7414 CT.'
Aunt Betty was listed in Census records as:
     1910 Census 'Alma SARRATT, age 3yrs, b. 1907
     1920 Census 'Alma SARRETT, age 14yrs, b. 1906
     1930 Census 'Alma SARRATT, age 23yrs, b. 1907

We need a copy of Aunt Betty death Certificate, which is a 'Primary Source' that can be used for 'Proof' If her death state is known, the Department of Vital Statistic can be contacted to recieve one.
What about her 2 Sons Charles & Ronnie PENDERGAST has anyone been in contact with them?...prs
