JOHN QUINN, son of HUGH QUIN Up to the present time, most Quin(n) researchers have thought Hugh's son, John, to be a man of that name found in a DAR record. He was b 1753 NC, m. Celia Moore (Orr) and died 1813 in Montgomery Co GA, having served in a Mecklenburg Co NC regiment during the Revolutionary War. Whereas, Hugh's son John, was alive and well in York Dist South Carolina in 1816, when he and his wife, Elizabeth, sold 183 acres to David Martin "containing all of that tract of land granted to HUGH QUIN except what has been sold to John Parker" Wit: HUGH QUINN & Z. COOPER (Zachary Cooper was son-in-law of John Quinn in St Clair Co AL). They also sold to JOHN DILL JR 357 acres, land which John had purchased in 1793 from his parents, Margaret & Hugh Quin, land on Broad River in York Co. Elizabeth and John Quinn (he used 2 Ns, whereas his father and brothers used 1) had obviously decided to leave South Caroline and go to the new state of Alabama, along with many of their neighbors. John Dill Junr and his wife Nancy decided to go along, and sold the land they had just purchased from John to William Thompson in 1817. There is no question that HUGH QUIN SR had a son, JOHN. John is mentioned in a number of records. In 1798 he served as administrator of the estate of Hugh Sr, but is not named as a son in the estate papers. Legatees were Daniel, Margaret, Peter, Hugh (Jr) and Robert Looney, husband of Mary Quin.. But in 1810, when Peter Quin gave land to his son Daniel which had been in Daniel's possession since 1801, a reference was "line near where said Daniel's UNCLE JNO. QUIN'S fence joins same river". A record in Mississippi (Goodspeed) on the family of William Hood, whose wife was Cecilia Quinn, stated that her father was John Quinn of South Carolina, b 1771, and her grandfather was born in Ireland. (It also said she was a native of GA which was an error). While this date is fairly consistent with census dates (b bet 1761-70 per 1830 & 1840 St Clair AL census), 1765 is a more realistic date. In 1790, John Quinn served on a jury, and he had to be 21. He was also married and had 2 daughters in 1790 Also, in Jan 1788, John Quinn & Abraham Greene were securities for Hugh Quin (Sr) to have license to keep a common tavern at his dwelling house. (Records from York Co Court Minutes 1786-1797). Hugh Quin Jr was previously thought to be youngest child of Margaret & Hugh Quin Sr, and he was born 1763. John was probably born 2 or 3 years later. A book on St Clair history stated that most early settlers did not take their families at once to new lands. ^Rather, a group of men got together, made the trip, laid out their lands and planted a crop for future food. Then they returned home in time to plant a cropland after harvest, went to the new lands. ' John would have been past 50 in 1818. Perhaps his sons, Anderson and John A. and some of his sons-in-law made the first trip. Alabama became a territory in 1817, and the 22nd state John Quinn Sr, p2 on 14 Dec 1819. The county seat of St Clair Co AL was Ashville. The first Alabama census in 1820 listed JOHN QUIN, HUGH QUIN, JESSE FONDREN, JOHN LOONEY- ANDREW, JOHN & JOHN DILL JR; EDWARD BALLENGER (who fomsrly lived on Cherokee Creek in Sparfcanburg Co SC; THOMAS CAMP. (Thomas Camp, or possibly his father, lived by John Anderson in Old Tryon Co 1779). Jesse Fondren lived on Cherokee Creek abt 3 miles west of where it empties into Broad River (now Cherokee Co SC) His wife was ELIZABETH DILL, daughter of John Sr and his 1st wife, who was MARY ELLEN FONDREN (m cal788 Spartanburg Co SC), dau/o JOHN FONDREN. JOHN DILL also had a son, ANDERSON DILL b 1801 SC who settled in Talladega Co AL, and a son JOSEPH DILL who was in St Clair AL in 1859. Some early records of the South Carolinians in St Clair AL: Among those serving on first jury in 1819, JESSE FONDREN, ROBERT HOOD & JOHN LOONEY, who was "Forman" (he d 1827). OBADIAH ROBERTS was Constable 1819, J.P. 1821. JOHN DILL was appointed J.P. 27 July 1819. JOHN F(ONDREN) DILL was foreman 1823 of grand jury which indicted JESSE FONDREN for assault. Serving on jury were ANDERSON QUIN, HUGH QUIN, JOHN PERKINS, & STEPHEN KNIGHT. Jesse was found guilty and his fine was one dollar and court costs. JOHN F. DILL was Admr of Estate of EDWARD BALLEN3ER 04 Dec 1821. WILLIAM HOOD & JESSE FONDREN were on juries 1827. From Will Book 1821-27, pl70, JOHN QUIN, ANDERSON QUIN, and JOSEPH P D GREEN were appraisers of the estate of John A. Cunningham 23 Apr 1827. JOHN DILL & STEPHEN KNIGHT were administrators for estate of JOHN QUINN 1845. JOHN DILL was one of the executors for estate of THOMAS CAMP, dec'd, 15 Jan 1849 (Note mw: From Tryon-Lincoln Land Entries 1778-80, entered 20 Jan 1779, JOHN ANDERSON was granted 100 acres in Tryon southside of Main Broad River; border MATTHEW GUTHERY & THOMAS CAMP). In Feb 1796, HUGH QUIN SENR paid bail for JOHN L. ANDERSON (from York Co Court Minutes) have not identified this man, but they were certainly neighbors Since one of John's two sons, and also a grandson, were named "ANDERSON", it seems possible that ELIZABETH might have been an ANDERSON. Now it seems she was Betsy MORGAN, probably a sister of Mary Morgan who married Daniel Quin Sr. JOHN DILL (SR) was born cl764 Maryland, and was living 1850 in St Clair with son John Forney DILL (called John Jr.) who was b. 1794 SC., and his wife NANCY, b cl796 SC. Nancy was dau/o Fanney ACKER & Jacob GREEN. Old John Dill's first wife was MARY ELLEN (ELLENDER) FONDREN who died abt 1813 SC. He married 2nd abt 1814 Mrs MARY (GREEN) OOPELAND, widow of WM. COPELAND who died 1804 SC. She was mother of JANE "JENNY" COPELAND, 1st wife. of HUGH QUINN III (son of HUGH JR) and Peter MORGAN were bondsmen for JOHN QUINN, Administrator of Old Hugh QUIN's estate, 1798 York Co SC. Mary & John DILL went to St Clair Co AL. in 1818, evidently with John F. DILL In 1818 York Co., SC. Hugh QUINN (III) was named Guardian for Jane (James?), Thomas & Mary COPELAND, children of William COPELAND Dec'd. Sept 20, 1814 in York Co, SC. Polly COPELAND deeded to daughter "JANEY QUINN" & others In 1850 Mary was 80y, John 86y. John & Mary DILL are buried in Hopewe11 Cemetery, north of Asheville, AL. 04 March 1805, York Co SC, Case 60, File 2748: Peter MORGAN & Elizabeth MORGAN were administrators of John MORGAN, dec'd. PETER QUINN & JOHN QUINN were mentioned. (p230 Hafter's Quin Book). John Quinn Sr, p3 In York Co SC, 28 Sept 1814, DB H-337, HUGH QUIN & JANE his wife of Rutherford Co NC sold a tract of land to their son HUGH QUIN JR (ill) on Cider Branch of Broad River (250 acres). Wit: JOHN QUINN SR and JOHN QUINN JR. JOHN JR was not a son, but a nephew. Born Apr 1785, he was oldest son of Jane & Hugh II. Some early genealogy work listed him as "died young", but he was in 1810 York SC census with wife & children, living near John Sr, and in 1844 was named in Hugh's estate. We now know that he left South Carolina about the same time as his Uncle John, but went further "west" to Bibb Co AL 1818/19, with his wife Nancy STACY, dau/o ROBERT STACY of Spartanburg Co SC About 1834 they removed to Oktibbeha Co MS where he died 1877 - 10 children. John Sr's son, Hugh A. QUINN, was in 1830 St Clair census, then went to Tuscaloosa Co AL where 26 May 1837, Levina & Hugh QUINN sold a tract of land to Robert Oliver. On 15 Feb 1837 they sold a tract to William Sutton & Nelson Skelton. By 1850 and in 1860 they lived in Jefferson Co AL, also children and grandchildren. JOHN FONDREN DILL died 1859 in St Clair AL. His wife. Nancy, was sole executor of his estate, their children having died earlier. Siblings naned in estate papers: ANDERSON DILL b cl803 SC; JOSEPH DILL 1800-1884 m Mary Ann ASBURY; ANNLORETTA (AMARETTA) 1805-1860 m ABRAHAM GREEN; CINIHIA C 1815-1870 m WADE B. NEELEY; MARY DILL b 1795 m WILLIAM COMPTON (CRUMPTON): ELIZABETH wife of JESSE FONDEREN, d before 1859 AL, had 3 children, Rainey, John and Elizabeth FONDREN. While it would be most interesting to have deeds and additional estate records for JOHN QUINN of St Clair Co AL, they do not seem necessary to show that he was without doubt the son of HUGH QUIN SR of York Co SC. There were no further records in York Co for hijn after he sold his land in 1816. The ages, number of children, and number of slaves shown in the York Co and St Clair Censuses are significant. It appears that John travelled to his new home with his two sons Hugh A. & Anderson, son-in-law Zachariah Cooper, and evidently future sons-in-law John PERKINS and Joseph GREEN, as well as a number of frends and neighbrs- Many of his line migrted later on to Mississippi and no doubt further West.
