Captian Jacob Quickle CARPENTER: (a.k.a "J.Q.")
This distinguished soldier of two Wars was born in Lincolnton, Lincoln Co., NC., about 1827. Upon the declaration of War against Mexico by the United States in 1846, being then only in his 19th year, he volunteered and went to Mexico as a member of a North Carolina Regiment and remained in the service for several years, returning home after peace was declared. [REF:#002] Pg433
It is said of young CARPENTER that in: "a bloody and almost savage engagement that took place between the city of Vera Cruz and Mexico, a United States Battery had been left on a bridge that was commanded by Mexican Artillery. That Battery had to be taken, and into the echo of his dauntless words reaching down these years, 'battery or a soldier's grave' The deed was glorious, and thrice glorious was the victory!" [REF:#002] Pg433

Soon after the close of the Mexican War (1846-1848) Capt. Jacob Q. CARPENTER, age 21 settled in Spartanburg Dist., SC and began merchandising at "Grassy Pond" area, which business he continued at said place with success until the outbreak of the War between the States (1861-1865) [REF:#002] Pg433 (He was 34 year old in 1861 ..prs)

At the outbreak of the Civil War. a (CSA) Company was organized embracing the territory of Spartanburg, portion of the present day Cherokee Counties. This Company was composed of the very best young men in this section afforded. [REF:#002] Pg434]

The Company was 1st organized with the 5th Regiment, SC. Volunteers, and was known as "G" Company of that Regiment. It served in Virginia for the most part of the first year of the War, and participated in all the active campaigns and marches of that year. At the expiration of his term of twelve month's enlistment, and upon the reorganization of the armies of the Confederacy in 1862, Captain CARPENTER was again elected Captain of a newly-organized Company, known as Company "M", Palmetto Sharpshooters but he was permitted to serve only a few weeks. While gallantly leading his men into action he was killed at the "Battle of Seven Pines" on 31st May 1862, age d. at age 35. Thus fell a valiant son of Carolina, possessed with nerve and vigor to battle for his country's rights, heart within and foes without. [REF:#002] Pg434]

These children were to young ever to recall the season when their father enveloped them with strong loving arms, and sadly do they realize how deprived they have been of lessons of wisdom and that flood of impulse and interest that can only flow from a father's heart. All honor to the mother who, with grand endurance, held the key of the souls or precious immoral's and stamped their character with the father's image. [REF:#002] , Pg434]
