Obediah Washington Surrette, Sr. b. c1790 NC E-Mail #1 Dated: Aug 21, 1998 Paul, I have read your web page about the family and am very impressed. I am searching for the names of the parents of my great-great Grandfather Obediah Washington Surrett/Surratt SR. He was born in 1790 in Dublin and came to the US from Ireland with his brothers Johnathan and David. I am told they came through Virginia but they lived most of their lives in NC and SC, in western NC and in the Spartanberg area of SC. Do you happen to have any information on him? I have heard that his father may have been Elisha Surrett/Surratt who came into the US in Carleston SC in 1775. Surrett, b. 1802 m. Rebbecca A. ALLISON Dear Paul, I am interested in the ancestors of David A. Surrett, 1820/21-12 Oct 1902, who married Rebecca Ann Allison. Some family researchers believe he was a brother to Obediah Washington Surrett, b. ??? - d. 4 Aug 1849, who married Mary Mae "Polly" Allison and also a brother to John Surrett who married Kizzie Worley. I do not know if these were brothers and would like to know. Paul, until I received your email of 16 Nov 1998 I did not know these persons did not relate to the Anthony Sarratt family [ the nearest geographically] and I wanted your data on the Anthony Sarrett family and a copy of the Nobel Sarratt papers so I could attempt to ascertain if there was a connection. As you say there is none then I will not need those papers. Paul, I am well familiar with Gedcom files and use them regularly and have observed that they appear to be ASCII text files. However your statement that you have all of your Sarratt Family Profiles in GEDCOM format seems to imply something that I do not understand; likewise the statement that the Nobel Sarratt papers are in Text Format. What is the implication. Do you mean to imply they can be electronically downloaded from the Internet like your SC census index files? If so where and how? Your web page clearly implies that these documents are available from you in hard copy pages for price and I wrote to ascertain the cost and your address so I could send you a check. I am slightly confused. In any event can you help me as to the ancestors of David A. Surrett? Thank you for your help as well as the work you have done and made available to the public via the Internet. Joe A. Cowart joalco@palmnet.net Joe, | |||||||||||

You seem (from the old Tavern stuff,) very sure there was no connection between my family (Johnny b.1782) Surrett branch of Sandy Mush,NC, and yours. Is that still true today? What info do you have on my family/Surrett?...that would make it so sure? I mean, even David A....of my family, spelled his name "Surratt." When I found the Surrett Gen. SURRETT, SCOTT Families Dated: Feb 16, 2001 Ever find a genealogy page that has a few names that you recognize and it makes you go "Hey! Hey!". Well I think that I may have a few links in with a few names that you have listed on SFA -I8490 for the Scott's from Buncombe Co.. Now the only thing to do is figure out who goes where, etc., etc.. I have a Lillie Surrett [prs FG 2466] married to John Scott b Sept 7, 1871 in Haywood Co. (John Scott being a child of George M. Scott). They had 3 children Jack, Dennis, and George. The info that I have says that John moved to Texas where he raised his family. I also have a Will Scott b Sept 15, 1870 in Haywood Co. (another child of George M. Scott) that was married to a Zora Surrett b July 18, 1873 d. April 7, 1858?. [prs FG 2466 2305 They also moved to Texas. They had 2 children, J. Otis Scott and Arnold Scott. It looks like to me that some information is crossed some where but that there is definitely a connection there. There are many Surrett's from the Canton, NC area and that are buried up there. I know of at least one cemetery that has several headstones with that name. Please let me know what info that you have and we can swap info, sources, etc.. I am in the process of getting my info into a program called GenoPro so that I can export a gedcom file. I only have it partially entered right now. I really look forward to your response. Re: David Surrett/Rebecca Allison 1st E-Mail Date: 05 Nov 2002 2:59:53 PM Pacific Standard Time Paul, My husband is Donald R. Surrette. We live in Transylvania County, NC. His father was Perry Lewis Surrette (1913-1970). Lewiss' dad was Henry Surrette (1886-1945). Henry's father was Perry Commodore Surrett (1846-1936) and Perry's parents were David (abt. 1820-1902) and Rebecca (abt. 1817-1902). Francis Allison is buried in a Henderson County Cemetery with a wife, Mary Heffner. However, Mary Heffner was born in 1809 so I doubt that she is Rebecca's mother. Census records indicate that Rebecca was probably born around 1820 at the latest. The information that I found concerning Cassie Baird is that she was married to Thomas Allison. Do you have any documentation that I could check for the relationship of Rebecca and Cassie or anything that shows definitely that she was the daughter of Francis. Also, you mentioned six sons for John Samuel Sarratt - were there only sons and do you have their names? I have found a John Surat in the 1820 Buncombe County census. Subj:Macular degeneration and the SFA Date: 16 May 2004 9:05:23 AM Pacific Daylight Time I stumbled accross your post while searching my geneology. My name is Gary Surrett. My father is Herbert Surrett. He is the youngest of seven children Ellen, John, Edgel, Walter, Della and Mary. His father was John Surrett who came west prior to the turn of the century and ended up in Arizona where he homesteaded near Mayer [Yavapai Co., AZ. 86333] He was from Smokey Mush NC. I am currently researching the "Three brothers story", becauce it fits our family lore perfectly. The story is that my grandfather, John had a falling out with his father (I am trying to get his name) over his father's moonshining business. My father's oldest sibling, Ellen suffers from macular degeneration and is nearly blind. I am 51 and my vision has deteriorated recently. Because of your post I am going to have my vision checked ASAP. Can anything be done to prevent or slow the condition? I hope this helps. See: Mrs. Margaret (SURRETT) REEVES We would like to exchange info. on this Family. ...prs 2nd E-Mail: Date: 19 Nov 2005 4:09:09 PM Pacific Standard Time Subj:Margaret Surrett Paul, My name is Ken Reeves. I am a great, great grandson of Wells Reeves and Margaret Surrett. Margaret being the daughter of John Surrett and Wells being the son of Sidney James Reeves and Elizabeth Wells. I scoured through your web site and gleaned quite a bit of information from it. I see that you have a son George A. as being born in 1850. I have it listed as a daughter named Georgia A. Wells and Margaret appear in the 1840 Madison County census and again in 1860, but are absent in the 1850. I believe that a later census shows Georgia’s birth state as Georgia, leading me to believe that they left North Carolina for a period. Would you have any information on this? Wells and Margaret are both buried in the Walnut Methodist Church cemetery in Walnut, NC. Next to them are my grandfather, Malley and his wife Julina and just below them are my grandparents Amos Stackhouse Reeves and his wife Sharlottie. Wells’ birth date seems to be a mystery. According to the "Heritage of Old Buncombe County "Vol 1 .. 1981" for family # 536 it tells about James Reeves. James Reeves married Betty Wells daughter of Newman Wright Wells. It also says 3 of his known children are: 1. Jackson Reeves, 2. Malachia Reeves b 1782 and 3. Wells Reeves b 1809 and died 1887, a78yrs His grave marker in the Walnut Methodist Church Cemetery says that he died on March 7, 1891. 1870 North Carolina census for Madison County, Wells is shown as being 70 years old. This would put his birth date at abt. 1799-1800. An excerpt from John Henry Ballard's biography: ...yet there has been some old people converted in my meetings. Among them my wife's grandfather, Welse Reeves, (Wells Reeves) who was ninety-one years old. Said Reeves lived to be 95 years old. If this information is true, this would put his birth about 1796. Who knows? If you are at all interested in the Reeves family, you can take a peek at my web site at: http://familytreemaker.genealogy.com/users/r/e/e/Kenneth-J-Reeves-Marysville/ Thanks, Ken Reeves, reeves@gogreatlakes.com Ken, We corresponded, in 12 Jan 2002, but no response since then. Glad to see you have a web site up and running. Thanks for the correction on Georga A. REEVES, we also picked that up on the 1870 Census. We are having a problem with the "Sidney James REEVES" and the Elizabeth "Betsy" WELLS marriage on 11 Jan 1785. We don't think they are the same James & Elizabeth of Rowan & Buncombe Co., NC. Subj:I have Reeves and may have Surratt ancestors 1st E-Mail: Date: 11 Nov 2005 11:15:14 AM Pacific Standard Time Good afternoon Paul, I certainly hope you have the same e-mail address as on your family tree on Rootsweb. I believe your #I9987, James Reeves, is my 3rd g-grandfather. I have his full name as Sydney James Reeves, b: abt 1775 in Rowan Co., NC, m: 11 Jan 1785 in Guilford Co., NC to Elizabeth Wells. From my 1st cousin’s research, “James Reeves was the son of Samuel and Mary (Watson) Reeves. James, born in Rowan Co NC m. Elizabeth Wells b. about 1777, d/o Newman and Polly (Bryan) Wells. They are both buried in Big Sandy Mush Cemetery, Buncombe Co NC.” My cousin’s research has Jessie J. Reeves as the 5th and youngest of their children. I’m descended from his brother, Wells Reeves. My grandfather, Rev. John Henry Ballard, wrote his autobiography in 1924. It does have some errors but includes, “I have always felt that my work should be especially among the young people: first because their hearts are tender and easily touched; second, because of my inability to instruct the better informed, yet there have been some old people converted in my meetings. Among them my wife’s grandfather Welse Reeves, who was ninety-one years old. Said Reeves lived to be 95 years old.” The reference is to his second wife, my grandmother, Mary Jane Reeves. I have the spelling of his first name as Wells. In the household of Wells Reeves in the 1860 census of Madison Co., NC, there is given a “John Serett,” age 80 and born in SC. We don’t know the surname of Wells’ wife, Margaret, b: Abt 1805 in NC but I suspect he was John “Serett.” Your tree has many, many with similar surnames. Do you have anything that would link to a Margaret Serett, or similar surname? Dee Ballard, deebjr@hotmail.com Thanks for the E-Mail, Dee Yes, the John SERETT, living with Dau Mrs. Margaret (SURRETT) REEVES is her "Father" who drowned the next year in May 1862. See: Mrs. Margaret (SURRETT) REEVES SFA Profile! We have a lot of "Unknowns & Not Traced" on this family. We would like to Exchange info. on this family. Do you happen to know where Wells REEVES (We have named after his mother's maiden name) and family were living in the 1850 Census? 2nd E-Mail: Date:11/16/05 6:21:33 PM Pacific Standard Time Thanks for answering Paul! Sorry, but I haven’t been able to find Wells in 1850. I would guess you already have him in 1840 in North Dist., Buncombe Co: Wells Reeves Household: Males; <5 2 5-10 1 10-15 1 30-40 1 Females; <5 1 10-15 1 15-20 2 30-40 1 and in the later “modern” census years. Though Ancestry.com claims their 1850 index is “every person” I can’t find Wells or any of the children I have under any spelling I can think of. My cousin has Elizabeth Wells, daughter of Newman Wright Wells and Polly Bryan as his mother. I’m having a problem with the dates of birth I have for James Reeves and Elizabeth Wells. I’m showing James born “Abt. 1775” and Elizabeth born “Abt. 1777.” Ancestry.com has: North Carolina Marriage Bonds, 1741-1868 Record Groom: Sidney James Reeves Bride: Elizabeth Wells Bond Date: 11 Jan 1785 Bond #: 000059112 ImageNum: 008467 County: Guilford Record #: 02 372 Bondsman: Jacob Blackwell Witness: W. Dent I can’t see a marriage between a groom 10 and bride 8! Could this be another pair with similar names? Was there an error in abstracting the marriage bond? The first child of this marriage would seem to be Malachi, born about 1792. Even this would have James a father at 17, Elizabeth a mother at 15. Can you straighten me out? Dee Ballard, deebjr@hotmail.com Dee, I believe the b. dates are correct (per Census records) but I don't think the 1785 marriage in Guilford Co., NC. are our James & Elizabeth. See: James REEVES SFA Profile! 3rd E-Mail: Date: 16 Nov 2005 8:19:24 PM Pacific Standard Time Hello again already Paul, Perhaps I can add a little to what you have on Margaret SURRETT b. c1806 Buncombe Co., NC. the census gives 1860, age 54 b. 1806; 1870 age 65 b. 1805; & 1880 age 77 b. 1803, Wells REEVES, b. c1805 Buncombe Co., NC the Census gives 1860 age 59 b. 1801; 1870 age 70 b. 1800; & 1880, age 80 b. 1800. You have 10 Children born to this Union: (4 Sons, 6 Dau's) I have plus Hollyn K (Malachia??) b. c1835 & Nancy A. b. Dee Ballard, deebjr@hotmail.com Dee, Thanks for the Census info. See: Wells REEVES SFA Profile! for Census records We have the same 10 Children per Richard H. VOSS, 1993 LDS record. Your Hollyn K. is the same child as Malachia W. that married Julian E. SMITH in 1863. We don't believe the Nancy A. REEVES, b. 1863, age 7yrs living with Wells & Margaret 1870 Census is a 'Daughter' more likley a Grandaughter (Mrs. Margaret (SURRETT) REEVES was 58 years old, to old to have a daughter) prs 4th E-Mail: Date: 18 Nov 2005 10:04:09 AM Pacific Standard Time Subj:John 'Serett' Good morning Paul, If the John “Serett” living with Wells and Margaret [presumably Surett] Reeves in 1860 is her father, census data strongly suggest he moved to NC before her birth (about 1805 or 1806). Margaret’s birth is given as in NC in 1860, 1870 and 1880. There is a John Serrat who might “fit.” John Serrat Capt Clines Dist., Lincoln Co., NC 20010| 20010|00 Dee Ballard, deebjr@hotmail.com Dee, We have the Census info. for John SURRETT at URL: See: John,7 SURRETT SFA Profile! prs 5th E-Mail: Date: 18 Nov 2005 8:18:47 PM Pacific Standard Time Subj:George or Georgia Reeves File:1870Wells(andMalachiW)ReevesMadisonCo.,NCImage140.bmp (635530 bytes) DL Time (28800 bps): < 6 minutes Good evening Paul, I’m still going over all you have on your Internet site on my ancestors. I believe I’ve found a small error. Among the children of Wells Reeves and Margaret “Surrett” you have, “3.10 5th Son: George A. REEVES, b. c1850 NC.” While the enumerator’s handwriting in the 1860 census is so poor that I can’t tell “m” from “f,” the 1870 census shows this person as Georgia A. Reeves, a 21 year-old female (and born in GA). I’m attaching the census image. It also shows Malachi’s family next door. I also wonder if the two females you have as born in 1825, Mary and Margaret, might be one and the same (or could they have been twins). Dee Ballard, deebjr@hotmail.com Dee, Thanks, Dee we picked that up also that George A. Son (1860 Census) to Georga A. Dau born in Georgia in 1870 Census. We think the 1st two daughters are "Twins" vs the same person. Mary A., b. c1825, d. 1885, age 60yr m. Wm. H. SMITH, 0Ch. Margaret E., b. c1825 d. 1902 age 77yrs m. James M.
