It is no doubt that our subject Joseph,3 SARRATT, is the oldest son of Samuel,1 SARRATT (1708-1775) and Grandson of namesake the French born Joseph,1 SARRATT (c1665-1715) of Prince George's County, Maryland.
Our subject Joseph,3 SARRATT, was born and raised to manhood on his father's "Bridgewater" Plantation, in Prince George's Co., Maryland; He was 19 years of age (1751) when he removed with his father to the South Hyco, Plantation, in Orange Co., which was later (1777) reformed into Caswell Co., and still later (1791) reformed to Person Co., all in North Carolina and the Plantation never moved.

Census 1790 58yrs with Wife & Children Hillsborough District Caswell Co., NC. Our subject Joseph,3 SARRATT was 32 years old when his father Samuel,1 SARRATT, (age 56) left the South Hyco area of Orange Co., NC. about 1764 and went to Rowan Co., which is now southern Davidson Co., North Carolina, & the "Jackson Hill" SURRATT's were formed.
The first record found in Orange Co., NC. for Our subject Joseph,3 SARRATT, was when he was 33 years of age at the May Court of 1765, ordered Joseph,3 SARRATT
to lay out a road from "PINSON'S Path nigh THOMAS RUNNOLDS, from thence into SYNNOT'S (sic SARRATT) Road nigh the meeting house. He was ordered to complete this in the company of:
PETER BANKSON;
JOHN BRATCHER;
ROBERT KILGORE, Sr.;
JAMES LEA;
JOHN LEA.
WILLIAM LEA;
ZACHARIAH LEA; and
NIEL McCOY;
In Spring 1771, Joseph,3 SARRATT, age 39 was one of the first to sign the "Petition" to form Caswell Co., from Orange Co., NC., the increasing difficulty of getting to Hillsborough to pay Taxes and to do other business, caused the settlers to petition for a new County, with the County Seat at Yancyville.
AMERICAN REVOLUTIONARY WAR:
Joseph,3 SARRATT, was 42 years of age when the Colonies revolted against the control of England. , but there is no doubt about his Patriotism. Joseph,3 and his son John,3 SARRETT sold supplies to the Revolutionary Army. Vouchers attesting to these transactions are in the State Archives at Raleigh, North Carolina.

10th Sep 1778 - 306 1/2 acres Land
On 10 Sep. 1778, Joseph,3 SARRATT entered some additional 306 1/2 acres of land, which records indicate this land was adjacent to his father's original Grant of 1750 for 422 acres, which Joseph,3 SARRATT already possessed in the now Caswell Co., NC.
(No record that father SAMUEL, 1 ever sold this property); This second Grant was issued from the state of North Carolina in 1779. This land was lying along the South Hyco River adjoining the lines of: [REF:#90, pg30]
WILLIAM LEA,
JOHN DOUGLASS, and
LAURENCE Van HOOK
In 1782, the Caswell Co., Court ordered that the 50 year old Joseph, 3 SARRATT to be the Overseer of the road from Capt. LEA'S ford on the "South Hyco River" to the Courthouse at Yancyville, NC.
(In early North Carolina, the Courts had the right to order any landowner between 16 and 60 to work on the roads..prs)In 1784 we have the Tax Record of Joseph,3 SARRATT, paying his list of Taxable on 506 acres of land, lying on the Hyco in the St. Luke's District, (now Person County), as per JOHN WOMACK the Tax Collector. This again shows that he was paying on his second 306 1/2 acres, and the 199 1/2 acres which his father had improved earlier. [REF: #90 pg30
On 17 Apr. 1787, Joseph,3 SARRATT, age 55 sold 150 acres, adjacent his land to his son JOHN, 3 SARRATT, for a token payment of 20 pounds. [REF:#90, pg34]
In October of that same year (1787) he sold 145 acres to JOSEPH CARNEY for 200 pounds. This left 211 acres from the original 506 he was taxed for, and tax records show he farmed this 211 acres with the help of two adult Negroes and his son ELISHA,3 SARRATT who was named as his poll [REF:#90, pg30]
(A "Poll" was a male over 16 years of age who was not only "Taxable", but also eligible for the Militia)Their was a ANN SARRATT who witnessed this Deed, which is believed to be his youngest daughter. by [REF:#90, pg30], but Dau Anne was not born until 1775, a12y. No record of his wife was mentioned, so we assume this was his Wife!.
In August of 1789, Daughter MARY "Polly" SERAT, was Baptize in the Primitive Baptist Church, later in September, 1789, daughters ANNE and SABINA SERAT, were Baptized.
Now that Person County was formed in 1791, the 1793 Tax Record shows Joseph,3, SARRATT was taxed for 211 acres, and he had Two Negroes who were taxable. (506 acres less 295a = 211acres) This tax records remain the same up until 1800.
In 1792, the SERAT Meeting House was mentioned as being one of the places the Church Association used as a meeting place on occasion. This SERAT Meeting House was an arm of the Flat River Church and Wheeleys was the other arm. The SERAT'S arm requested in Sep. 1792 to be constituted into a District Church and was granted permission, so obviously Joseph,3 SARRATT and family was supportive of this Church.

ELISHA,3 SARRATT. <---3rd Son!
[REF:#90, pg31]Joseph,3 SARRATT, left all his remaining land (some 211 acres), to his 3rd. son ELISHA,3 SARRATT, he also said in his Will that in regard to the land that 1st. son SAMUEL, 3 SARRATT sold to his brother, 3rd. son ELISHA,3 SARRATT "a good deed, should be prepared for ELISHA SARRATT," because JOSEPH SARRATT, 3 had intended that land for SAMUEL, 3 SARRATT originally. (No land record has been found, of Joseph,3 SARRATT to his 1st. son SAMUEL, 3 SARRETT) The language of Joseph,3 SARRATT'S Will indicates his disappointment with 1st. son SAMUEL, 3 SARRATT, who was already in Tennessee, by then.
Joseph,3 SARRATT'S Inventory, showed him to be a man living in comfortable circumstances so he must have been a prosperous farmer. He had a large inventory of tools and necessaries for farming, his stock consisted of: [REF:#90, pg31]
