William and Adeline SURRATT are buried in SURRATT Cemetery,
Jackson Hill Twp. He was known by his middle name, Morton,
most of his life. He and his second wife, Adeline, lived
a half mile north of Lick Creek Road halfway between
Clear Springs Crossroads and Lick Creek Baptist Church.
The house was three fourths of a mile northwest of
the SURRATT family graveyard. Exact dates of birth for
their children were lost when their house burned and destroyed 
the family Bible along with the remainder of their 
possessions. According to tradition, Adeline had gone to a
camp meeting and left the oldest daughter, Cynthia, in
charge of the smaller children. When Adeline returned that
evening, all the children were standing in the yard and
all was lost. William Morton d. in 1873 because he had
lost his health from exposure in the Civil War and declined 
steadily thereafter.

Albert L. & Sirona (Rush) SURRATT 
first set up housekeeping in the Redwine house 
		on the Yadkin River near the Reid family place. Albert's 
		mother, Adeline M. (Cranford) SURRATT, lived with him until her death in 1930 
		at the [Page 91] age of 98yrs. Soon after 1895, Albert 
		purchased about 60 acres of the SURRATT homeplace from 
		his cousin, 
Julius SURRATT, who had inherited the property 
		from his father, Richard L. SURRATT.

 On the land was a small house
		probably built by Julius or his father which contained
		two good sized rooms and a long porch across the front.
		This house, along with a barn, was located about
		mile due south of William Morton's place and about
		three fourths of a mile southwest of the family-burial
		plot. It was 200 yards from Cabin Creek, a small tributary 
		of the Yadkin River.

 The SURRATT property then and today [1980]
		borders this creek on the north side for considerable 
		distance. Later, Albert added to his property by buying a
		second share of the Richard SURRATT place. On this
		place a house stood on what is now  three 
		fourths mile due west of the SURRATT
		burial ground. Albert's last three children were
		born there. This house still stands. (1980) In 1911, 
		Albert and Sironia moved to Denton and built a fine
		two-story home on West Salisbury Street. He operated 
		a small grocery store next door, but in 1915
		he moved back to the farm. In 1927 they built a nother house one mile southwest of Denton and in
		1945 Robert L., the youngest son, returned to Denton
		with his wife, Cleo, to care for his aging parents.
		After Sironia's death, Robert and Cleo moved to
		Denton and Albert lived with them until his death.

 CONFEDERATE STATE of AMERICA (CSA) NORTH CAROLINA TROOPS

 
The 3rd Infantry Regiment State Troops completed its organization at Garysburg, North Carolina, in May, 1861. 
The men were from Wilmington and the counties of Green, Duplin, Cumberland, Onslow, Bladen, New Hanover, and Beaufort. 
During July part of the regiment moved to Richmond, Virginia, then was joined by the remaining companies some weeks later.
 After serving in the Department of Northern Virginia and the Department of North Carolina, it was attached to 
General Ripley's, Colston's, Steuart's, and Cox's Brigade. 
The 3rd fought on many battlefields of the army from the Seven Days' Battles to Cold Harbor, marched with Early to 
the Shenandoah Valley, and saw action around Appomattox. 

It reported 46 casualties at Beaver Dam Creek , 80 at Malvern Hill, 253 at Sharpsburg, 3 at Fredericksburg, and 
179 at Chancellorsville. The unit lost 4 killed and 10 wounded at Second Winchester, forty percent of the 548 
engaged at Gettysburg , and 7 killed and 65 wounded during the Mine Run Campaign. It surrendered with 4 officers and 53 men in April, 1865.

 The field officers were Colonels William L. DeRosset, Gaston Meares, and Stephen D. Thruston;

 Lieutenant Colonels Robert H. Cowan, William M. Parsley, and Edward Savage; and Major William T. Ennett.
