Paul,
Let me thank you first for your outstanding transcriptions on the indexes for Union County, SC. I wish more county websites were like this...what a pleasure!
I am curious on your surnames: Surratt and Walker... what is your connection to those? I am descended from Walkers, but Surratt married into my Walker family. In fact, we have a Surratt/Walker reunion every third September in Tishomingo County, MS.
Is this a conincidence or do you think your family line descends into MS?
Karen
Thank you for the kind words! My "Connection" to the SARRETT are from the Spartanburg, Cockie & Sevier Co., TN. (See my Home Page!)

SURRATT, G.W.
Dated: Oct 20, 1999
Hi Paul,
Do you have any information on G.W. Suratt (1.3.3.07) that married Lucinda Brashers? They were married 2-9-1828 in Tishomingo Co. MISS... I would love to know you G.W.'s parents were. Lucinda's father could be Berry Brashers, Lawrence Co. Tenn.
We think that G. W, stands for George Washington.
Christine Klug, E-Mail: mailto:cgenie1@aol.com
Thanks for the E-Mail,
See the Profile on George "G.W." & Lucinda (BRASHERS) SURRATT We don't think they were married in 1828, Tishomingo Co. that was still part of the Chickasaw Nation, until 1836? Our records show married in Lawrence Co., TN.
We would like to exchange info on this family. ..prs

Hi Paul,
I am kind of excited!!! When my great great grandmother Margaret E. Suratt was married to John A. Lassiter, A Jacob Suratt signed what appears to be some sort of dowry or loan that was on condition that the marriage took place. Margaret and John were married May 17, 1853, in Tishomingo Co. I have a copy of this document.
I understand that you do quite a bit of writing about and for Native Americans. Do you know if there are any Native Americans within the Suratt family? Margaret had two living children, both girls and one Mary Ellen, married a Benjamin F. Vaulner. There is supposed to be a Benjamin Vaulner/Volner (spellings can vary) that was of Native American blood.
My great grandmother Martha Cordelia, married a fellow named William Smart. I can find no trace of him prior to his marrying my great grandmother. Family says that he left home at an early age and never spoke of his kin. At least not that anyone can remember. Another relative told me that when John and Margaret moved to Ark. that a group of Indians used to come and camp on their land from time to time. Also that my great grandmother and her husband used to travel with them early in their marriage.
There is a lot of hush hush in this family. Those that talk about it don't have all the details and the ones that won't probably do!!! It could be on both sides of the family!!! Every descendant of Jesse Lassiter, kids say that there is Cherokee in the family although no one seems to know where it came from and since most of these modern day folks have not met each other until adulthood it seems unlikely that they would all have the same story unless there was some truth to it. I have found a Martha Smart on the rejected rolls in Oklahoma, but as yet I have been unable to find out what exactly was on the application itself. With only a name to go on I have no clue whether or not it is her. We have the stories of folks either moving to Oklahoma or visiting other kin there but I can't find out where these people actually lived...like what town etc.
All I have are these bits and pieces of a puzzle that I have been trying to arrange and make fit. I may never finish the puzzle, but I am certainly going to give it my best shot!!!
Thank you for sending me that link. I will check it out as soon as I finish writing this letter.
Is it possible that Lucinda and G.W. Suratt could have been married maybe either in Tenn or even in the Indian Nation if they were in fact Native American??? My great great grandfather fought in the civil war. I have copies of his pension papers. On those he was described as being about 6 ft tall with black hair and black eyes and being dark complexioned. To my knowledge there is no African in our lineage (who knows for sure right? Although all of the pictures of family that I have seen there are no Africans.)
If you can help me I would really appreciate it. It would mean so much to me and to several of my elderly family members to finally find out for sure and put these "secrets" to rest.
I know back in the 1800s it was not "fashionable" for whites to marry Native Americans and some of my family names keep popping up with Native American ties. I would love to know for sure...If this heritage is here for me then I want my children to know. Some folks out there just want to find out for the monetary reasons. I just want to KNOW!! This has been taken away from my family for too long and we need to set the record straight. I have lost 2 relatives already who really wanted to know whether or not they were NA. It would have meant a lot to them to know they were. Now they are dead, but their children would still like to know.
Can you help me????
Thank you so much for responding...

Hi Paul,
After going to your site that you sent me the link to, I found that you also have SMITH lines too? My SMITH were also Irish and were from the Missouri area. The earliest one I have record of is a John Smith married to a Mary Jane Carter. I am going to guess he would have been born around maybe 1830 or later. They had a son named Jacob (Jake) Smith who was probably born around 1850 or a little later. Jacob was married to a Mary Bruington. They had a son named John Pennington Smith. He was my grandfather and he was born in 1883, in Missouri. Do you think that there could be any connections??? Christine Klug, E-Mail: mailto:cgenie1@aol.com
No my Smith's came from Canada to K.C.MO. ..prs

SURRATT, George W.
Dated: Jan 13, 2000
Paul, Just yesterday I got on -line at home and stayed up all night on the computer and I plan to stay on all day today. I'm still learning my way around. I have, through my local library, sent e-mails to different ones trying to find someone researching my line which is:
George W. Surratt
(I'll use this spelling for the entire line because his name was spelled differently almost every time I found him. I honestly believe George must have had a speech impediment.) a blacksmith b. abt. 1803 in NC (acc. to the census) d. bef. 1860. I must confess I wasn't there when he got married, but I believe, and all data fits, that he married Lucinda Brashiers/Beshiers (b. abt. 1810 in Tn.) in Lawrence County, Tn. in 1828. His name was spelled Cerat then.
On the 1830 Lawrence Co., Tn. census his named is spelled George C. Ratt. By 1840 they are in Old Tishomingo County, Ms. (his name was written George Ratt 1840, 1845 state census he's George W. Serrett) and in 1850, their children are named (name George Suratt):
1. John b. TN 1829 m. Jane
2. Jacob b. TN 1832
3. Unknown daughter b. TN 1834
4. Margaret b. TN 1835 m. John Allen Lassiter on 5-4-1853 Old Tishomingo Co., Ms.
5. Metilda/Malinda b. TN 1838 m. 1) Phillip Parker on 3-8-1869 in Mc Nairy Co.,Tn., m. 2) L.H. Hazzard on 2-14-1873 in McNairy Co., Tn.
6. Nancy b. MS 1840
7. Tabitha b. MS 1842
8. Mary b. MS 1843
9. Clarissa b. MS 1845
10 Lucinda b. MS 1847
11. Angeline b. MS 1849
12. William P. W. b. MS 1853
My line comes through # 5. Malinda Surratt
Nora Catherine Surratt b. c1861
Felin Belle Surratt b. c1879 m. Ada Myrtice Hand 4-7-1913 McNairy Co. Tn
1. Hassie Matha Surratt b. 1914 m. Tab Hill
2. Alvin (Todd) Surratt b. 1916 m. Jewel Barnes
3. Ophelia Mae Surratt b. 1918 m. James Arnold Jones
4. Arnold Surratt b. 1921 d. 1925
5. Barnell Surratt b. 1924 m. Mary Lee Drinkard
1. Mary Frances Surratt b. 1947 m. Jim Lindsey
2. Martha "Nell" Surratt b. 1948 m. Robert T. Lowe
1. Mary Ann Lowe b. 1975 m. Patrick Shane Daughdrill
I have hunches on some of Malinda's siblings, but no one has come forward except for a descendant of Margaret Surratt who married John Allen Lassiter.
George bought some land in Mississippi and the deed is recorded under George W. Crat. When it was sold, he was listed George W.C. Ratt and Lucinda B. C. Ratt. So what was his name? Both daughters that I know married under the spelling Surratt and the son Jacob was listed in church records in 1858 as Surratt.
I'd like it if you would see if you can find any of these folks in your files. I'd love to hear from other descendants of George and Lucinda Surratt. I believe Clarissa married John W. Jones in 1868 in McNairy and I think there's a good possibility that Lucinda married Jacob Hurst sometime after 1880 in McNairy Co. I think it's possible that John was married Sarah Jane Hanks and moved to Tippah Co., Ms. I include John, Clarissa and Lucinda just in case someone has already sent in the information and that would verify my research.
At any rate, I look forward to researching on the internet and I thank folks like you who have been the path-finders for the rest of us to follow and I wish everyone would send in whatever they know about their families. Sometimes elimination is as good as a find.
Thanks for listening, Nell Lowe, E-Mail: nello@c-gate.net
